Mary Mapes is still clueless. In her first interview after being canned from CBS for running bogus documents, she proves not only that she is sill delusional but she still has no understanding of simple ethics.
Mapes says she is continuing to investigate the source of the controversial documents whose authenticity was seriously questioned by the CBS panel
She reminds me of one of those Japanese pilots they found on islands in the Pacific during the 70s and 80s who were still fighting WWII. The difference of course is that the Japanese pilots were cut off from reality by a lack of communication. Mapes is cut off from reality because she refuses to accept it.
But here is the quote that should keep her out of newsrooms for life:
She tells Ross that she had no journalistic obligation to prove the authenticity of the documents before including them in the "60 Minutes II" report. "I don't think that's the standard," she said.
HUH? Any journalist can make any attack against the President of the United States and the authenticity of the accusations is irrelevant? Why not ask him if he stopped beating his wife yet?
Believe it or not... It gets worse:
Mapes says one of her few regrets in handling the story was her phone call to a member of Sen. John Kerry's Presidential campaign staff prior to the broadcast. "I wish to God I hadn't done it, because I think it was so wildly misinterpreted." She says she made the call only as a way to gain favor with the source who provided her with the documents.
Did you get that? She still sees nothing wrong with her behavior, only that she got caught.
The worst part is that she'll make millions off her misbehavior. Such a deal!

Her strict interpretation of what a producer's job is and is not is laughably stupid. Sure, as a producer it's not technically not her responsibility to authenticate documents (that's Rather and his crew's job; nevermind the obvious deflection her by Mapes' in regard to that!), but it is her segment and the legitimacy of it rides on her shoulders, and that is the "standard".
I wish I could make millions this way. I'm sure there's a way for me to forge some documents and make a few bucks...

When asked point blank, "Do you believe the documents were authentic," her answer was not an answer. She replied that she didn't think anyone had yet been able to prove they weren't authentic.
Another of the same old "throw out any accusation and demand someone prove it isn't true" trick.

"Make millions?" I don't think so. The only ones interested in buying her book would be the DU-ers. I'm not sure they can a) read and b) afford a book on the McSalaries...

Don't you bet her journalistic career is finished. She'll probably be picked up by Frontline or Pacifica or NPR or some other wacko left outfit for a six-figure salary. This is in addition to the six-figure advance she received for her "poor me" book.
Crime does pay.

Paul, I think your title just might be wrong. But your last line is probably right.
Maybe Mapes really DOES get it. After all, its easy money: extracting dollars from the pockets of delusional moonbats. Easy prey!
Look at Cindy Sheehan. Obviously, she’s not the brightest bulb on the string, but she has managed to make herself into an international celebrity, and is probably now set for life.
Of course, it is whoring at the highest level.
But not to fear! In their minds, its entirely justifiable. It’s the only way to fight against oppression, hypocrisy, and corruption by Bush, neocons, wing nuts, corporations, and probably you and me.
Like you say, such a deal!

As a journalist she is not supposed to BELIEVE in her information she's supposed to KNOW her information is above reproach!
A journalist is to give an unbiased equal weighted report about the facts of a situation for the viewers to make their own informed opinions, NOT to be fed the journalist's own opinion. If Mary Mapes wants to give out her opinions she needs to do so in the proper place, not disguising her own agendas and opinions as news. This has become the problem with so-called news in America today, find the reincanation of Morley Shaffer! I do not trust a large number of the people to are trying to tell me what's important.
