Argue all you want about his punishment vs the punishment of others, you have a good point there. Without knowing the full details, I think we can still all acknowledge a liberal lean exists on most campuses. But labeling him 'My New Hero' is a bit shortsighted and hypocritical, IMO.

A longstanding embarrassment? Are you kidding? Mary Jo Kopechne is dead and all Ted Kennedy got was a 2 month suspended sentence. You call that merely an embarrassment. What I call an embarrassment is that the people of Massachusetts continue to elect Ted Kennedy after Chappaquidick, and that the man actually ran for President.

What really and truely confounds my faith in the universe as a whole is that people have to look for nefarious motivations for the swiftboaters and Vietnam POW's because they can find no other reason whatsoever that a bunch of veterans from that era and the POW's that were tortured in prisons while Kerry was branding them all as inhuman war criminals in the US media would speak out against him.
No... it's Nixon.
Yeeah. Uh huh.
Individually the swiftboaters had no power to speak of. O'Neil has been on a vendetta since the war itself but he's never been able to keep Kerry from public office. The reason things changed when Kerry was running for the presidency *on the merit of his war service* was that the wounds of 30 years ago are still fresh for a whole lot of people. Here was a man who'd labled them war criminals, attached himself to Hanoi Jane's train, and thrown his medals away as worthless to him, even shameful. (Until he felt them useful politically, of course.) And to this day has not signed his military records release form, prefering to only give out what he wants people to see. (I don't suspect he's hiding anything more damning than his IQ scores.)
But the only reason the swiftboaters have to oppose him for commander and cheif of the whole dang military is that they are Republican stooges?
It confounds my faith in the universe.

Oh, good. Then we can bring up Monkey George's DWI, Dick Cheney's TWO (count 'em, 2) DWI's, and the arms-length list of chickenhawks in the current administration, and that's ok too, right?
Or we can always bring up Henry Hyde's "youthful indiscretion" extramarital affair (at the "youthful" age of 40), Lynn Cheney's lesbian love affair trash novel she wrote (and Kerry was accused of bad behavior for calling Mary a lesbian - what a phoney Lynn is), Scooter Libby's bestiality tale (called The Apprentice), etc, etc, etc. Or there's always the WMD's claim, or the "Saddam is involved in 9/11" lie.

Ted's case was adjudicated. You might not like the result. Tough.
Chappaquiddick came a year after his brother was assassinated and 5 1/2 after his other brother was assassinated. No excuse but had Ted been convicted of DUI causing death he would have been out of prison for 26 years.

What a perfect microcosm of the loss of civilized behavior this post and thread is. To take an example of disgusting manners and to turn it into a political whine fest is proof that we've lost our collective minds and accepted a lack of upbringing and downright bad manners as something to cheer about.
Each time we applaud behavior like this, no matter if it is directed at a republican, democrat, woman, ....anyone, we lose a little more pride in what we've touted for years as American civilization.
People are not defined by their political beliefs. They are first and last defined by their character. If you don't get that, it must be the concept eludes you. To understand character and to live with yours intact, you embrace good manners. Period.
