Think Again

Comeuppance--it's such a satisfying word, and one seldom sees it or hears it in an English sentence. Come to think, one probably sees it or hears it even less in an Urdu sentence. Or Serbo-Croat. Still, we, the crack young staff of "The Hatemonger's Quarterly," greatly esteem it.

How could you not enjoy uppity types getting their just desserts? We can't think of a reason either.

And so it was with great relish (and mediocre mustard) that we, the crack young staff of "The Hatemonger's Quarterly," took in the following news clipping from the pages of The Weekly Telegraph, the expatriate version of London's semi-esteemed Torygraph:

Churchill straightjacket statue pulled

A charity removed a statue portraying Sir Winston Churchill in a straightjacket last week after protests that it was in bad taste. Rethink, the mental health group, erected it in Norwich in a campaign to change attitudes to psychiatric illness, choosing Churchill as he suffered from depression.

Now, perhaps the satisfying bit of this story is a tad opaque, but it's there all right. A more-thoughtful-than-thou mental health team sought to change people's troglodytic thoughts on the psychologically impaired. Hence the self-impressed name "Rethink"--they want you to alter your unenlightened opinion, you dolt.

And yet, by demonstrating an appalling lack of taste by putting up this Churchill statue--against the wishes of Churchill's family, mind you--they became the targets of public obloquy.

Accordingly, dear reader--and this is the delicious part--it was Rethink that was forced to rethink. Once they rethought, they gave their tasteless statue the axe. Plenty satisfying, isn't it? How do you like 'dem apples?

Now, don't get us wrong, dear reader: We're sure that many people hold unhealthy attitudes toward mental illness, and greater public acceptance of the topic is a good thing. But certainly there are ways of getting one's message across that aren't so unbecoming.

(Here's an idea off the top of our collective head: Why not dress your new spokesperson up as a "bi-polar bear"? Think of all the fun to be had. The kids will love it. Especially the ones with ADHD.)

We don't mean to force the issue, but don't you think you need to be a tad mentally unsound to think an effigy of a straight-jacketed former Prime Minister and savior of the country is a good idea? We mean, come on: If you're going to treat a public figure in this shoddy manner, it might as well be Ken Livingstone. That guy deserves slightly less respect than a Britney Spears cover band.

We imagine that the geniuses behind Rethink would be a bit perturbed to find their parents' likenesses made into statues, complete with straight jackets. So why are they so cavalier about others' sensibilities?

For a group with the name Rethink, you'd figure they really would have thought this all through.

(Note: The crack young staff of usually "weblog" over at "The Hatemonger's Quarterly," where they are currently fashioning a bust of Pamela Anderson.)

"obloquy" - mind you--they became the targets of public obloquy. "Abusively detractive language or utterance"

troglodytic- A member of a fabulous or prehistoric race of people that lived in caves, dens, or holes.
A person considered to be reclusive, reactionary, out of date, or brutish.

Here's an idea off the top of our collective...

Sorry, I must bow to the might and (fill in the blank) of the United States and its people. Bring it on, carrot cake.
