Since the US and EU have stopped payments, the terrorist government will most likely collapse financially:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and the European Commission suspended aid to the new Hamas-led Palestinian government on Friday, pushing the Palestinian Authority closer to financial collapse.
The U.S. State Department, making its announcement, said it would boost humanitarian aid to the Palestinians through U.N. agencies to avoid widespread distress in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, but the United States would not fund an organisation committed to the destruction of Israel.Quoting a statement by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, spokesman Sean McCormack said the Palestinian Cabinet must meet terms laid out by the quartet -- the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia.
"The path back to the road map is clear: acceptance of the three principles. If it accepts the Quartet principles or a new government comes to power that accepts them, funding can be restored," the statement said.
The three principles are that Hamas must renounce violence, recognise Israel's right to exist and express clear support for the Middle East peace process.
As of this morning, Hamas has remained defiant in spite of the financial cut off and will not recognize Israel's right to exist.
GAZA, April 8 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said on Saturday his government would not bow to foreign pressure to recognise Israel and disavow violence despite funding cuts that are pushing the Palestinian Authority to financial collapse.
The United States and the European Commission suspended direct aid on Friday to Haniyeh's new government led by Hamas until the militant Islamist movement renounced violence, recognised Israel's right to exist and supported peacemaking."The attempts to strangle the government have one aim," Haniyeh said.
"They will not extract political concessions from us that will harm the rights of the Palestinian people," he said in a speech at the opening of a children's art exhibition in Gaza.
Hamas' hate toward Israel is so deep that it has decided it will sacrifice the needs of its own citizens before it acknowledges that Israelis are human beings who have a right to live, too.
All Things Beautiful reminds us of the Hamas Charter, the ideas it will not let go of, in spite of the cut off of aid. Here's is Hamas' position on Israel:
On the Destruction of Israel:
'Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.' (Preamble)Anti-Semitic Incitement:
'The Day of Judgment will not come about until Moslems fight Jews and kill them. Then, the Jews will hide behind rocks and trees, and the rocks and trees will cry out: 'O Moslem, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him.' (Article 7)

And it will force the rest of the Arab world to financially sanction this hate that they have been getting for a relatively cheap price prior to the election of the Hamas government.

The Hamas predicament reminds me of an interviewee who happens to be black and is asked the irrelevent question: "Do you NOW disavow what Louis Farrakahn said!"....Look, Hamas (former creature-client of Israel) has already disavowed violence and has kept to a unilateral cease-fire for over a year. What is more, they were democratically elected. Israel is not threatened but chooses to maintain that illusion so that it, a 1st-world nuclear power can collect grant money from the USA. Loans, too. But "free money" is the addiction.

Everyone keeps saying "they were democratically elected". I dont see the relevence. Just because someone is elected dosnt entitle them to money. Further, giving money to a group that acknowledges that their goal is to attack another state would be pretty stupid, why not give them guns and tell them "now dont kill anyone with these". Food aid should be given directly to the people, and the economy should be developed. I wouldnt give a cent to the government. Even the last government was spending money on god knows what so fast they were already in the red. Maybe we should offer free finance classes as well.

OH, how long until someone claims we are trying to kill palestinians so that Israel can have that land? I'm betting less than a month before some lefty Congressperson or Senator says that cutting off the aid is just a way to help Israel "steal" that land (which was theirs before there even was an Islam).

US Foreign aid should take three, and only three, forms: 1) Rights protected representative democracy, 2) Capitalism and the freedom for citizens to won and use property, 3) Services and resources needed to safely implement 1 and 2. We should never provide money or guarantees of loans to organizations that have already failed to manage them.

bryanD: How much effort does it take to be that frigging stupid?
1) August 28, 2005 -- Hamas suicide bomber in Beersheba foiled by two security guards, who are severely injured.
2) Israeli officials announce that they foiled 4 separate Hamas attacks during 2005.
3) Six Israeli civilians are killed and five injured by suicide bombing at the Karni crossing. (Yes, it was over a year ago, but you said "over a year," so I decided to include all of 2005.)
4) Far too many Qassam rockets fired into Israel to keep count. The only reason more Israelis haven't been killed by them is through the sheer incompetence of the Palestinians -- not through any signs of moderation.
Hamas has REPEATEDLY stated since the elections that they will NOT negotiate with Israel, that they will NOT renounce violence, and that they will NOT recognize Israel's right to exist. Meanwhile, they (much like the Fatah kleptocrats before them) have done NOTHING to curb terrorism launched from territory they control, and consider those who do anything to curb the violence against Israel and execute them as "collaborators."

The Palestinians have every right to elect whoever they want to be in charge-be it Hamas or some other party.
What they don't have a right to, is funding from other nations that don't happen to like Hamas or what it stands for.
When you vote for a bunch of terrorists, don't be surprised when other nations that don't like terrorism make you lay down in the bed you made.

The bottom line is that Palestine cannot continue to be solvent while Hamas is in power.
When Hamas gained the majority of seats in the Palestinian parliament, Israel stopped turning over $50 million a month in taxes and customs revenue it collects under previous agreements. The Palestinians collect around $35 million in taxes themselves. They need at least $150 million a month to cover operations.
The West and Israel will not continue to fund the Paletinians when their controlling party clings to its charter of DESTROYING Israel!

Jay Tea, you said: "After all, I think the Southern election when the segregationist Democrats kept the reins of power were at least as corrupt as the Palestinian elections..." That's a point. And in the case of George Wallace, who you mentioned, within a few short years post-segregation, he was popular with all races in Alabama and winning the majority of the black yote. A state still built on race identity such as Israel where even Arab spouses of Jews can't vote, can't let accomodation like the American south's happen. And as for the Spreading Democracy meme: I AGREE! Now, would somebody inform the White House?
