So says Hillary Clinton.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called Tuesday for a new national economic strategy that combines fiscal discipline with broad health-care reforms, a rebuilding of the nation's public works and innovation in such fields as energy research to foster success for the middle class...
..."I suggest that we agree on the need for an economic strategy that keeps our economy growing and creating good jobs in the face of new competition, and that we strengthen the middle class--which is, after all, the engine of our growth and the backbone of our democracy," said the former first lady, who was born in Chicago and grew up in Park Ridge."The truth is, we can't be secure without a strong economy and we can't sustain our deepest values without an economy that rewards hard work," she said. "Too much that comes out of Washington these days is either defeatist, denials or happy talk."
Clinton aides said her speech was aimed at discussing ideas rather than sounding a purely partisan tone. At the same time, she echoed several themes consistent with past Democratic complaints that while the nation's economy may appear buoyant to some, it has failed to lift low- and middle-class taxpayers.
Unemployment at only 4.7% and high paying, high quality jobs don't mean anything - they're just "happy talk"?

Republicans don't have much to brag about these days - excepting the economy. So, if I was a Republican, I would hammer it in, constantly mentioning the economy.
However, I think Hilary is referring to the "happy talk" that progress in Iraq is "great," the insurgents are in their "last throes" and so on and so on.

Taxpayer? That's what I am to them? How about "citizen" or "American". And while we're at it, what the hell is a "low income taxpayer"? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Boy, it's nice to finally see at least 1 Democrat join the reality of the last 2 1/2 years!
(7 million new jobs!)

Yup...
We can not have 'happy talk'! Casualties are down over 50% the last three months... It would be a tragedy! if any Dem would acknowledge this fact. (Does this mean the Dems are in their "last throes"?)

Tim in PA, you're right, "low income taxpayer"? But the point is, these people are being VICTIMIZED by evil, nasty Rethuglicans and their racist, Laffer curve tax policies. Never forget that.

Laura,
I am happy to see that you acknowledge your fellow right wingers as thugs. That is an apt description.
As a leftie, I can honestly tell you that the only opression we feel from you on the right is your appaling lack of intellect.
You people are too dumb to really opress any of us in any meaningful manner other than your loud, incessant yelling on talk radio and Faux News.

Being lefty and being intelligent are two things that don't go together. Every single attempt at socialism has been a failure. Only the stupid and the crazy keep trying the same thing over and over again hoping for a better result the next.
Only intelligent people listen to talk radio and watch Fox News.

Hmm wasn't the Clinton mantra in '92 "it's the economy stupid"? She has most of Bill's negatives and none of his charm. Please nominate her.

For too many of our elected officials, we ARE nothing but "taxpayers", cattle that they can milk for more money whenever they need to fund some pet project to get more votes. Gas prices are heading up toward $3 again, and our wonderful government in Raleigh recently RAISED the state gas tax (one of the three highest in the country, I believe). When our governor, Tax-hike-Mike Easely, was asked whether he'd suspend the tax to help people deal with the high cost of fuel, he answered, "No. The state needs the money."
So, f*** you, taxpayer peons!

Isn't it funny how the "Lefty's" jsut come out and use personal attacks. Thats's the best part about being conservative. Economy is booming, WE'RE the ones with the money (Because we're not communist or lazy) and as a vet, I can tell you from 3 years forward deployed, Iraq is a good deal.
It's funny BECAUSE they use attacks, when WE'VE got all the guns!!
You can't win either way girls. But you try. I once clobbered a wormy liberal for making snyde liberal remarks. He sat there bleeding with tears, saying he won because he MADE me hit him.
Well DAMN, if that's liberal victory, no WONDER they're saying we can't win in Iraq!

I love it when Hilary talks about how we need "ideas". I have yet to find an actual idea (as oppposed to a wish) in that speech, or any other speech she's given recently. In fact, I suspect that the last time Hilary actually had an idea was when she worked out that marrying Bill would be a good career move.

Left Coast, it's interesting that your criticism of people on the right is exactly the behavior your side engages in. If you want to see thugs, take a look at our lefty dominated college campuses free speech is brutally suppressed. They are so weakminded they can't even tolerate hearing contrary views. I know talk radio and Fox news drives you folks crazy because you haven't been able to stop it or control it. Air America is just what we expected - a dismal, pathetic failure. The best your side has to offer is AL FRANKEN?! Nancy Pelosi? Babs Streisand? Sad. Very sad.
Face it, the only time you can win is when you control the rhetoric and thanks to talk radio, Fox, and blogs, you've got nowhere to go but down.
