Whose National Anthem Is It?

Michelle Malkin reports that our National Anthem was re-recorded in Spanish by several Latino artists and renamed Nuestro Himno as a "show of support for migrants in the United States." Check this out:

NEW YORK - Mexican pop diva Gloria Trevi, Puerto Rican reggaeton Ivy Queen and Tito El Bambino and other Latino artists are recording a Spanish-language version of the U.S. national anthem in a show of support for migrants in the United States.

The Latino-oriented record label Urban Box Office (UBO) said Saturday it plans to release the new version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" to coincide with the U.S. Senate's debate on immigration legislation next week.

Congressional debate over immigration bills proposing everything from toughened border security to the legalization of undocumented migrants in America have triggered huge demonstrations across the United States in recent weeks.

"We chose to re-record 'The Star-Spangled Banner' to show our solidarity with the undocumented immigrants and their quest for basic civil rights," UBO President Adam Kidron said in a news release.

The recording, dubbed "Nuestro Himno" or "Our Anthem," is set to "rhythmic Latin musical arrangement" but respects the song's traditional structure, UBO said. The song will be primarily in Spanish with a few words sung in English.

The song is on the album "Somos Americanos," which will be sold for $10, with a portion going to Washington-based National Capital Immigration Coalition, UBO said.

As Michelle asked, who's assimilating whom?

David Hinkley of The New York Daily News is a little concerned:

The intent with "Nuestro Himno," or "Our Anthem," is quite specific.

"We decided to show our solidarity with the undocumented migrants," says President Adam Kidron of UBO Records, which is releasing the track to coincide with a U.S. Senate debate on an immigration bill whose carrots and sticks could change the lives of maybe 12 million immigrants, documented and otherwise.

The song tries to say in music what millions of immigrants have argued in recent street demonstrations: America's tradition is inclusion.

Let's just not be surprised if it stirs other folks to say that America also has a tradition of English, and that if you really want to be part of things here, you don't make it by singing her song in some other language.

Kidron dismisses the cultural-subversion theory. Today's immigrants want to become part of America just like earlier generations of Germans, Italians, Irish and Russians, he says.

In fact, he argues, they have: "Today we are Americans and 'The Star-Spangled Banner' represents everything to us."

It sure would lower our national blood pressure if everyone accepted that.

But the national anthem, ridiculed though it may be as a piece of music, has deceptive emotional power.

That's why artists from Jimi Hendrix to Marvin Gaye as well as jokers like Roseanne Barr have used it to make some larger point - and that's why they were all blasted by choruses of critics who told them to make their point somewhere else with some other song.

I understand an immigrant's desire to come to the US to find a better life for himself and for his family. However, to do so without any regard for our immigration laws and to later demand full rights and American citizenship is unacceptable. Now we have our American Anthem, a moving and loved tribute to America's fight for independence, has been taken over and used as an illegal immigrant call to action.

Stuck on Stupid asks if a latino Pledge of Allegiance is next.

Unabashedly Unhyphenated is offended.

Gloria Trevi? A quick reference at Wikipedia supplies more than you probably want to know about her. To quote Wikipedia :"Trevi became more reclusive after that. For years, all that was heard about her were rumors and speculation. But then, in 1995, Sergio Andrade's former wife published a book about how Andrade allegedly would pick up teenaged girls and lure them into a web of sex and slavery by promising to make them superstars. According to the book, named De La Gloria Al Infierno (From Glory to Hell), Trevi was also a willing participant of Andrade's scams, and she had fallen in love with her manager, supposedly participating in his manager's sexual orgies and slavery acts with the teenaged girls just to please him." Read MUCH more about the flight from authorities and subsequent jailtime of this woman. And SHE defiles OUR anthem? grrrrrr

I think we should cancel any cinqo de mayo celebrations. They want to stay out on May 1 - fine. The rest of America will stay out on May 5.
It's not embarrassing as much as it's infuriating. This should kill any support from Congress on "amnesty" for illegal immigrants (they aren't "undocumented workers" - they're illegal). The immigrants who have assimilated are actually busy - working. And probably don't have time for the chutzpah going on with the illegals.

Being of Latin decent and having visited some Latin American countries I can understand their desire to come to this country. But I also know that there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. I try to uphold and live by the laws of this country like any good citizen should, so it upsets me when people come over here illegally and then try to change our policies internally. There are ways of coming into the country legally. Crossing a line in the sand does not make you an American. Simply living here does not make you American. Sneaking in and then trying to change it's laws in your favor is just wrong. To add insult to injury they then protest the very law they broke to get here, and ask that all be forgiven. How should we react when people break our laws to cross over and then get enough bleeding hearts behind them to approve their behavior. Being American is much more than location. It's about a way of life, and upholding common laws which, we as a society have seen fit to put in place. Our common language is English. My grandparents had to learn it, and so should everyone else that comes here.

The *motivation* seems sort of odd but I just can't get excited about singing the national anthem in a language other than English.

Course then, my relatives fly Norwegian flags in their yards and at one time I could sing the Norwegian national anthem... we did a "Norway" program once at school. When we sang the anthem everyone stood up.

I see this *particular* thing as separate from the question of illegal immegration. The thing is, that we *don't* assimilate our immegrants to a pre-existing US culture and *that* is one reason that we have fewer problems than some. No, no, it's not a deliberate ghettoization into China Town and Little Italy, and anyone who does come here really *needs* to learn English, and not because I get bent like some do when other languages are spoken, I think everyone should retain their heritage and language, but they need English if they are going to compete and participate.

In general, though, we like our differences and want to keep them.

Opposing illegal immegration doesn't have anything to do with Cinco de Mayo celebrations or speaking Spanish.

Where I grew up we celebrated the 17th of May instead. Flying the flag and singing the anthem of another country wasn't something anyone questioned. Becoming wholly American doesn't mean having to give that up, and it shouldn't.

Faith+1:

I am a Hispanic.

I immigrated to this country--legally.

If the intent of re-recording the song was an effort to encourage other Hispanics to immigrate I wouldn't have a problem.

I even support efforts to re-write the immigration laws to make it easier. As someone who went through the process it is overly beuracratic and needs cleaning up.

That should be done through the actions of our legislatures--not arbitraily decided by non-citizens.

The problem is that this re-write and many of the supporters of it are NOT looking to immigrate. They are looking to colonize. The problem with many of the Latinos is that they don't realize the problems in there countries have nothing to do with geography--it has to do with the Hispanics and Latinos themselves.

If they wish to immigrate and become part of the American dream so be it...and I will support them in whatever LEGAL manner neccessary to see as many people can make into this country LEGALLY to add to it.

If they wish to simply turn this country into another corrupt third world socialist/communist cesspool then I'll be one of the first at the border to stop them. I left that insanity to come to a place like America--I have no desire to see it turned into that.

Faith+1 -- you hit the nail on the head.

One of the reasons that we have a process for immigration (as opposed to an open door) is so that new arrivals will (hopefully) gain an understanding of the principles and mechanisms that have made America "the land of the free", prosperous, and peaceful, before they are fully immersed in this society.

Skip this step, and you wind up with immigrants being exploited (as we see with the illegals), and/or demanding to replace "what works" in America with their own set of principles ... which may not work for America as a whole.

Of course, many native-born Americans who are open-borders advocates stopped believing in many of the principles I'm talking about, long ago. They have been trying to replace those principles with a mix of Utopian idealism and hedonism for years ... and see open borders as a way to gain more people to support their cause.

In other words, for the sake of votes, they are willing to exploit those who seek to come here ... encouraging them to skip the process, come on in, and listen to the siren song of their value-free worldview and hoping they'll sing along ...

... without regard to how they are damaging the nation and these newcomers by short-circuiting the immigration process.

That ... not the opposition to illegal immigration you and I share ... is what comes closer to the "hate" others accuse us of.

It is ironic that those "citizens of the world" screaming loudest about an alleged "culture of corruption" in DC, are advocating policies that subsidize the rampant corruption and ineptitude in nations like Mexico, to the tune of billions of dollars and greatly reduced pressure for positive change in these nations.

Faith+1 you make alot of sense. I too have seen the corruption in the latin american countries, and wouldn't really want to see that duplicated here.

As for it being a Latin thing. I don't agree with that. It's a poverty thing. Poorer contries where the people for the most part are uneducated get by on the barter system. You do for me I do for you. The problem is that most of the time you have a few people who are better off getting most of the perks. The police who don't get paid much to begin with think that everyone should pay them extra to DO THEIR JOB! So they hit everyone up for a payoff.

Once again I don't have a problem with more latinos coming here I just think it has to be done the right way so that they can see the proces, and hopefully assimilate into what we call America.

3. Yes, your parents are illegal and you're not, they should of thought about that before they had the kids, they should of applied for citizenship before having those kids and they should be deported.
4. The government needs a taste of how Americans feel about this issue - a day without Latinos, what about a day without Americanns? we need to vote these officials out of office and if the government can't do what is right for us Americans then perhaps it is time that we took the law into our own hands and start taking back the country that my relatives fought and died for.

I have respect for those people who have come here, become legal, and have made a lives for themselves.

How long do you think you would last in Mexico waving the American flag? Americans will not tolerate this and it will only get worse before it gets better if a change doesn't happen now.

I am in total support of whatever it takes to get all illegal immigrants out of our country then maybe we can concentrate on taking care of Americans i.e. the homeless, the unemployed, the children in our own country that go to bed hungry every night - I will not allow them to make this into a third world country and I agree that they should of stood up for their rights in their own countries, if I have to fight in this war I will with the honor and respect that my family members did.

Barbara:

I very much protest this conversion of the National Anthem into a Spanish version. None of the other ethnic groups who migrated to the United States - either with legal documentation or without - found it necessary to make a version in their native language. Is this implying that of all the ethnic groups who have come to the United States - Vietnamese, Russians, French, Germans, Portuguese, etc., etc., etc. - only Spanish-speaking people are too slow or mentally impaired to be able to sing it in the language in which it was written? What an insult to those native Spanish speakers who have come here through legal channels and who, like the immigrants of prior generations, have learned English.

My ancestors came in through legal channels and although they maintained a great pride in their origins, they were prouder still of being American citizens.

I also wonder how the British producer of this project would feel about having "God Save the Queen" sung in, say, Swahili - or any other language of citizens of the Commonwealth.

I totally agree with this article. It is everyones goal in life to work towards the top. Being ambitious is no problem. If your country is one that does not believe in freedom, then find one that does and abide by the laws. Beggers can't be choosers. Illegal aliens should be lucky enough to have made it here in the country. I understand if you want to get your point across but do it in the right way and earn citizenship first then complain about rights because you will have the right to. Abide by the law and if it does not work for you then you can lobby it. It really vexxes me why immigrants would have the nerve to protest about citizenship when they have come here illegally and then make an anthem for their stronghold? I think we are catoring to everyone now days and we have become such a politically correct country that soon, there will be no freedom because everytime someone has a complaint, we will appease that complaint and make a law about it. Too many laws prevent freedom. I wouldn't be surprised if a revolution occurred between the government and the people or between racial differences the way our country is becoming. Very scary for our children and grandchildren. I feel for them for what we are becoming and for what we have done.

2. Respect the laws.
3. PAY TAXES.

Monica, Ana, Beto you're not doing anything to further your cause by sounding like the ignorant beaners you're trying to convince people you aren't. If you're going to post a message atleast make it sound intelligent.

Yes this country was invaded and taken over by another race. So what get over it. Before that the various tribes killed each other for dominance. Unfortunatly it's the way the world works. The problem I have with this whole thing is that it gives latinos a bad name. We're all seen as people who don't want to adapt, but would rather force our way on others.

For that idiot Jorge Rodriguez to go on tv and say something like "We want full amnesty, full legalization for anybody who is here (illegally)," is just dumb. Who are you to demand anything? The whole approach by immigrants should be we love this country. We came here to better ourselves. Please give us a chance to prove this. Not "You will recognize us".

And now to include the Muslims in on this is just stupid. Unfotunatly for Muslims they're not the most trusted people in the US right now, and those Mexicans here illegally would do right to distance themselves.

In short, this is not about a show of force, it's about a desire to become American. Anger and stupid sayings won't get you far. Refusal to learn the language or adapt will get you even less. So learn the pledge, learn the National Anthem (In English) and ask nicely. You might be surprised with what happens next.

To all illegal Mexican immi... (Below threshold)
Greg L:

To all illegal Mexican immigrants,

As usual, you just have to use the racist crutch when you know you are completely in the wrong. We who were born here (regardless of your heritage) or became an American LEGALLY are Americans. ANYONE who enters this wonderful country ILLEGALLY is not! They are a burden! How can you expect to be welcomed into our country and culture when you have disrespected the laws of this great nation from the first step that you took on this great land of ours? You rally, arrogantly demanding the rights that we have by birthright just because you are here now illegally standing on our land. You even refuse to even learn the language? Why do you expect us to change who and what we are to make you illegal immigrants happy? What makes you better than our ancestors that did come here LEGALLY and BLENDED into OUR society rather that hop a fence and demand we learn yours? It amazes me how stupid and arrogant you are!

Now on top of all of this you are disrespecting our beloved National Anthem by making a Mexican version and claiming it's to help immigrants to understand it? LEARN ENGLISH! Here you are again trying to change us to accommodate you. All you do is cry about getting our birthrights, how you are Americans just because you are standing on our soil (illegally) and continually put up more disgracing barriers between us such as this song. This is a sacred song in our hearts and you just stabbed us there. You just don't understand, do you? That's most likely due to the fact that you refuse to learn English.

Your actions tell us everything about who you really are.It doesn't look promising.

I wish I was politically literate and could comment on that level. But I'm not. I'm a single white mother living in Florida. For 3 years I lived in a neighborhood where english was a second language. I was a cashier in a store and was told a couple of times that I need to learn spanish. This was told to me by the spanish customers. All around me were people speaking and I didn't understand anything being said. (15 years ago that neighborhood was english speaking). I could be standing there talking with someone in English and someone would walk up and the person I was speaking to would automatically switch to spanish as if I'm not longer visible.

I'm qualified for office work but a lot of jobs now advertise that they need bilengual applicants. (Not someone that speaks english and french, or english and german, or english and chinese).

I feel as though another culture is taking over my country. It is now politically incorrect to say "Merry Christmas". Renters can get 1,000 dollars for a 3 bedroom apartment because 8 adults will live there and can afford to pay this much on their $6.50 job. I am considering adapting those living arrangements but I can't talk all my relatives into living in such close quarters with me. It's amazing how the jobs down here pay so little. That's because there's so many people here that for every one that walks out, there's 2 that walk in. I had to apply for food stamps. Out of 28 people in the food stamp office in Kissimmee, there were 3 white people. The Publix store in that area began a tradition of setting aside a certain day for celebration and called it Spanish Heritage Day.

Not only do I feel like an alien in my own country, but I also have to watch while our national anthem is treated so lightly as to be manipulated for polital gain by a group that has no idea what it means to be American.

Also, I won't have to dodge all their kids and baby strollers. They say that all these mexicans are coming over here to work, hell, what they are really doing is prostituting their little girls to give birth to more kids so they can become immediate citizens. Verse 1

Chant:

It's time to make a difference the kids, men and the women/Let's stand for our beliefs, let's stand for our vision/What about the children los ninos como P-Star

These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws.

See this can't happen, not only about the Latins.

Asians, blacks and whites and all they do is adding

more and more, let's not start a war

with all these hard workers,

Somos hermanos, es nuestro himno.

En el fiero combate en senal de victoria,/Fulgor de lucha, al paso de la libertada,/Por la noche decian: "Se va defendiendo!"

"Our Anthem"
(Translated from Spanish)
Verse 1
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail as night falls?
Its stars and stripes floated yesterday
In the fierce combat, the sign of victory
The flame of battle, in step with liberty.
Throughout the night it was said, "It is being defended."
Chorus:
Oh, say! Does it still show its beautiful stars
Over the land of the free, the sacred flag?
Verse 2
Its stars and stripes, liberty, we are the same.
We're brothers, it's our anthem.
In the fierce combat, the sign of victory,
The flame of battle, in step with liberty.
Throughout the night it was said, "It is being defended."
Chorus:
"Oh, say! Does it still show its beautiful stars?
Over the land of the free, the sacred flag?"

I love it. This spanish version makes the national anthem more inclusive. There should be more versions of the anthem. There should be one for our fellow African immigrants, Russian immigrants, Chinese immigrants, etc. We immigrants are so sick of being excluded from singing the english anthem at ball games when they are sung by white Americans. There should be days where all national anthems should be played in an immigrant's version. Power to the immigrants. This country is made of immigrants. We immigrants build America. Without immigrants, this country would still be in the wild west age. Sad, sad, the America-born-immigrant decendants have lost touch with their immigrant predecessor.

MDiaz:

A man had a 10000 acre farm. He built up the land and added all the trappings a person could want. He invited people over all of the time to swim in the pool, and reap the rewards of his labor. People came from all around staying for days in his gardens, and living off the land.

One day a neighbor who was not as well off snuck in to his land and decided to set up a small cottage in a remote corner of the land. He worked hard and built up the little he had, as best as he could. Pretty soon other neighbors not as well off were doing the same. They ate of the land owner's gardens, and live stock. Used the land owner's electricity to power their houses, and swam in the land owner's pool.

All the while the owner's cost to maintain the land was rising. His electricity bill went up, the cost of replanting went up, and extra hands were needed to til the land that had, at one time, produced more than enough food. The land owner was no longer as wealthy as he used to be, and his family suffered for it. His invited guests no longer had food to spare, and his house was close to ruin.

The owner discovering what had happened, asked them to leave. When this didn't work he called in the police to help evict them. The trespassers decided to make a stand and claim the land as their own. They hired lawyers to defend their right to the land. They made accusations that the land rightfully belonged to them. They played the pity card and stated that all they wanted was the same chances that the land owner's family had.

The trespassers made a spectacle of themselves and made the landowner out to be an evil miser who wouldn't share his wealth when in truth all he wanted was for them to wait for an invitation.

Tee:

I posted a bit about this in my blog as well. I was initially so angry that I made a graphic of the Mexican flag mixed with ours to see how they like it. Mature, right?

In my comments I said:

The increasing agressiveness of this movement is causing people who ordinarily would side with the immigrants to turn against them. It benefits them nothing to be so demanding and stubborn in this situation, as honestly, they are owed nothing.

It is cut and dried that they broke the law to get here. I try to remain compassionate about the reasons for doing so, but they make it hard when they are demanding rights that they do not legally have any legitamate claim.

On top of that, doing things like translating The Star Spangled Banner and renaming it "Nuestro Himno" (Our Anthem) is only causing a backlash against them. Where would the line be drawn? What if the hispanic immigrants who are from Mexico decided to combine our flags as I did in this post? Would that be acceptable? What if they demanded we started printing money with Mexican landmarks on it?

While our culture began very mixed it has become a stable culture with certain symbols and traditions we call our own. While we do not have a "national language" it is accepted and well known that we speak English here.

I just think that if people want to come here and bring their culture and traditions, that is fine, but you can not expect to change the very fabric of what America is and has been for over 200 years.

... BTW, I am happily married to a hispanic immigrant who is now a naturalized citizen. He studied hard to learn English and speaks it well. That's how it should be.

This only wounds the story about the status of immigrants, and the fact that no other country in the entire world allows as many people in the door as the US. We are only trying to make sure that if you want to stay, you pay.... taxes, etc... After living in many immigrant populated areas, it's very common to come to the US, work for 6-7 months and then return to Mexico.... and never live in a house, pay property tax, etc. This anthem is ignorant to say the least, and it doesn't represent solidarity, as there are many Mexican-Americans who feel they should be 'legal'.
What would happen if we came to MexCity, and played their national anthem, reqrote the words, and then said it was for solidarity... Wow !!! What a '**ucked' up country!! I expect everyone to respect them as well, just as we should respect any other country and what they are proud of. I do not appreciate all these people on this site disrespecting our nation. This country has been through enough, we do not need anything foolish to make matters worse. All the Mexican immigrants that come to the United States come here for a reason, to be escape the life of poverty and to better themselves here in America. If those same mexican immigrants want this, they need to do it the LEGAL way. What they don't realize is it is our hard working tax money that pays for those immigrants that get a hold of illegal social security cards and some how collect welfare, and any other free assistance. That is money that we WORK hard for. I can agree with some of the things mentioned by others. I do believe that these immigrants do come over here and work hard. All I wish is that everyone stop all the fighting and hatred and I wish that the Mexican immigrants would respect all of the American beliefs and traditions. You can't just go into someones home and take what you want, unless you are a criminal but you eventually have to pay the price for the crime. If you want to become an American citizen, learn the language, beliefs and National Anthem in the the way it was created. If you want to be apart of this country, these immigrants are going about it the wrong way. Immigrants that want to live here, need to live here and not try to change our ways, this is why they are trying to escape Mexico because of the way it is run. Bottom line: RESPECT OUR NATION!

Funny how you fucks call all the immigrants rapist and murderers, but why dont we talk about all the John Wayne Gacy's and Theodore Kaczynski's that are already here in this fucked up America. Its hispanics like me and the rest of these well-educated Latinos that scare you fucks since you begin to see our faces in politics and see us coming up in this country. We aren't trying to have any laws changed, just trying to stop certain laws from "becoming". And if that involves more laws to cancel the ones, like Sennsennbrenner HR-4437, then so be it. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British drinking song. Pretty ironic HUH? If we had not won the war, we would be British Subjects right now. But we are not and our National Anthem is set to the tune of a British drinking song. Wonder if someone didn't have a sense of humor back then? Do ya get the irony?

Of course this country needs Mexicans...who else would work 50 and even 60 hours a week at a minimum wage job?...NOT The white people that's for damn sure. Mexicans are some of the most hardworking people in America and it's a shame that we are punished and regarding as criminals for wanting a better life for ourselves and our children.
3. And isn't it ironic that you sit here and complain about how illegal immigrants are demanding this and that, that they're marching for rights that they don't deserve, and causing an up rise in society, when you're sitting on your lazy ass at home doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING? HAHAHA...You don't like what we're doing? Don't just talk; let's see you do something useful.
4. On the comment about Mexicans entering diseases to America...Are you forgetting about the dirty white trash that walks around selling their body like the piece of garbage that they are? Because when I wake up every morning to go to school, (to try to make something better of myself) and see them on the street corners spreading AIDS and what not, I sure as hell don't.
5. We know that this problem doesn't just affect Mexicans. And thank you Italiana, yes I think it's a little obvious that Mexicans aren't the only immigrants in America. The fact of the matter is that the bill is ridiculous and unrealistic. My parents are immigrants and are both now citizens. But guess what? It doesn't matter whether they're citizens or not because we live in a country today that frowns upon you regardless of your legal status because you're not part of the majority. It's time you "legal" Mexicans started standing up for your people because guess what, legal or not, you'll always be a spick in the eyes of a white person.
6. And just for the record I am a legal citizen who takes pride in being American because I know what being an American truly is. And, it's definitely not just learning how to speak English and waving an American FLag around. This country was founded on democratic principles and basic human rights that were garunteed to all. It's time that we actually learned what that means.

To continue in English press 1. I am an immigrant who came over legally with my parents when I was 5. We all learned to speak English, filled out all the paper work and became citezens 5 years later. I moved to Germany in 1979 filled out all the proper paper work and lived there for 8 1/2 years. No one there had forms in English to make things easy for me. Learn the language or get out. When my Mom retired she sold off everything and moved to Spain, again filling out the proper forms (in Spanish, it's the national language, speak it or get out). When I moved back to the States from Germany I brought my wife and daughter back with me. I had to fill out all the immigration forms for both of them and deal with all the INS beuracracy, but we got through it, and they both learned English. At present my daughter is working in Egypt ( legally) and guess what, she has learned to speak pretty good Arabic. My family is scattered throughout the world. Most of them are living in countries other than where they were born and they have all learned the language of their adopted country SO WHY THE FUCK CAN'T THESE GOD DAMN ILLEGALS LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH AND EXPECT US TO LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE. SPEAK AND READ ENGLISH OR GET THE FUCK OUT!!!!

And as for some clowns saying "we mexicans were here first", unless you are pure Inca, Mayan, Toltec or Aztec you are the offspring of Conquistidors who stole the land and murdered the afore mentioned tribes and forced the spanish language on them, so think up another sob story.

This is and always has been an English speaking nation. The European and Asian immigrants applied for admission and waited their turn to come to America. While they may have lived in a meighborhod peopled by their former countryman, and spoken their native tongue at home and among friends they learned English, they applied for citizenship and they recited the pledge in ENGLISH. They became adapted to their new homeland. It never occurred to them to demand that America adapt to them.

I have no objection to anyone maintaining their heritage and their pride in the land they originally came from. I am a second generation American yet I still consider myself an Italian as well as an American.

The Hispanic people are the only immigrant group that has arrived at out shores insisting that they be permitted to maintain their language and culture. They insist that we accomodate them by providing everythinhg from street signs to separate classes in school in Spanish. They are the only immigrant group who feels they have a RIGHT to enter America whenever they wish and that once they arrive they should be welcomed and permitted to stay.

I do not support amnesty for anyone who has entered this country illegally and I never have. It infuriates that we are forced to spend huge sums of taxpayer dollars to accomodate the outright refusal of this group to learn English.

If they wish to become American, let them enter legally, and do what every group before them has done: feel free to maintain your culture in your home and neighborhood but learn the English language and adapt to your new homeland!

MDiaz:

CL I hate to say this but the illegals have brought this down on themselves. These problems are actually the result of poor management on the part of the Latin Community leaders.

Their first mistake was allowing illegals to march with Mexican flags. Their second mistake was allowing and encouraging the creation of this bastardized version of our National Anthem. Finally allowing the leaders of this fiasco to get on tv, radio and the internet and demand equality, Big Mistake.

I realize that there are alot of people on both sides saying stupid things like go home, spic.... But that's just ignorance. Fact is that people who snuck over to America broke the law. Fact is that the illegals did the wrong thing for a right reason, and that a large majority are hard workers, that most of us would be proud to call American.

What should have happened is that the illegals should have "rallied" not protested. The rally should have included signs admitting the infraction, and appealing to the American people for a chance at a better life. That would have atleast gotten a large majority on the side of the illegals. Instead they came out with unfounded bravado, that only alienated the average American.

Now I've read that Muslims are joining in on the party. Even bigger mistake! Most Americans wouldn't trust a Muslim as far as they could throw them, and having them on the side of the illegals is inviting trouble.

Truth be told this whole thing has been mismanaged from the beginning. People who come here illegally are ILLEGAL ALIENS! Own up to it ask for forgiveness and stop trying to pretend that no wrong was done. As for what we are doing about it. CL don't kid youself for one minute. This isn't something that people are going to take sitting down. America has defended itself before and will again. I only hope it never comes to that. Stupid bravado won't win this. Humility and acknowledgement of wrong doing on the part of the illegal immigrants will go alot further than a loud mouth.

Part of becoming an American is learning it's history, it's language, and yes it National Anthem, and Pledge. I have friends who have come from other countries and have done that much why shouldn't everyone.

I'm all for patriotism, what I'm against is apathy. I'd rather not learn how to sing this the right way so I'll change a few words, and rewrite it in another language. Come on that's just wrong.

hick:

We have to turn Mexico into another Japan, by other means, of course. You know I'm right. Else, this immigration flow will never end and good old America will be slowly eaten up by hispanics...Think about it for a second...Mexico and other south of the border governments will do little to help their own people. So, we Americans will see our communities slowly disappear.

By the time we realize it, get mad, and decide to really do something about it, we'll be too late to stop this south of the border invasion--since there will be too many illegals to deport, too many of them to keep watch on, they'll have too much of a voice, the employers share beds with their cheap laborers, and the greedy employers prod the politicans with a stick, our children will speak spanish, the border with Mexico will be full of holes still, and Latin America will still be poor. And thus, like locusts they'll devour us all. The swarm would only stop when there's nothing left to devour.

Yes, I'm being so inhumane. I know. But sadly, we have to be tough now, or else, we'll lose our independence to Latin America.

Folks, this immigration wave is NOT like immigration waves of the Italians, the Irishman, the Chinese, the Asians, the Africans, the Russians, and other immigrant groups. Former immigration waves were assimilated. In those cases there were a natural physical controls of the flood of immigration. The controls being the sea and the air.

Without these natural flood controls of humanity, and as long as Latin America is in the poor house, the illegal immigrants will over whelm the host country, the assimilation process reverses, and the host country will become assimilated. It's natural. America is like a big city. And people migrate to big cities. It's very hard to stop the migration. And the migration continues.

It's natural for the good, but poor folks to seek a better life. Wouldn't you, if you were poor and have a little love one to take care of, trek hundreds of miles to make a sweat-breaking or demeaning, in some cases, dough? That's why we see the gradual wall of illegal immigrants.

However, we also have small ones to feed and our way of life to preserve. America, we need to make a stand. No guests or un-invited guests of mine should come to my house and demand to be served. So please, don't turn my American children into hispanic. Instead, you should turn into hispanic american by the legal process. But at the current rate, the assimilation process reverses, like I said.

Darn, I'm not being kind to hispanics, aren't I. No, if my good old communities are assimilated by the immigrants. Heck, we wouldn't have this issue if hispanics do as other immigrant groups and come to the border nicely, legally, and assimilate. Then, opportunities are abound. You or your children can be come politicians, governors, big business owners, astronauts, and wealth property owners. But no, no, it doesn't look that way.

We Americans need to take a stand. It's the lower and middle class americans who need to take on this fight. Don't rely on those fellow americans who are of the elite and the higher class to fend for you. For they are cocooned in their mansions, suites, and gated communities to ever notice the blight of middle america.

Darn you all, you can work so damn hard, why don't put an effort into fixing this problem. Heck, I'm so tired with this writing. I don't give a damn anymore. You win. Please come into my house, read my books, touch up the ceiling, carry me to bed, and sleep with my wife. And the world will be as one.

{and in case anyone tries to tell me that the indians and mexicans had this land first, please note that i AM indian.} the american people (race discluded) shouldn't be forced to take in people that feel they don't need to go thru the proper steps to become american. look, we open our doors wide for those who want to go thru the process properly. but to me this song seems a blatant attempt to start a war. when considering all that america has done to help immigrants, it seems a bit of a slap in the face to us. personally, i believe some of the comments on here stating such as ' white people are lazy' etc. are just downright uncalled for. there are many people of different races that are lazy. mexicans, whites, blacks, and yes, even indians. such comments as those really reflect the lack of maturity coming from those who made them. some people on here have made outstanding points, and i think all should really take into consideration the way that most here as a whole feel. remember the golden rule.... because to me it seems as tho some have forgotten it.

"CBS/AP) A Spanish-language... (Below threshold)
completely disgusted:

"CBS/AP) A Spanish-language version of the "Star-Spangled Banner?"

"I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English," President Bush told reporters Friday, "and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English, and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English," he said.

British music producer Adam Kidron said he just wanted to honor the millions of immigrants seeking a better life in the U.S. when he came up with the idea of a Spanish-language version of the national anthem.

Kidron said his idea of "Nuestro Himno" "has never been to discourage immigrants from learning English and embracing American culture," but rather seeks to provide an outlet for patriotism for those who have not yet learned English.

The initial version of "Nuestro Himno," or "Our Anthem" comes out Friday and features artists such as Wyclef Jean, hip-hop star Pitbull and Puerto Rican singers Carlos Ponce and Olga Tanon.

But some Internet bloggers and others are infuriated by the thought of "The Star-Spangled Banner" sung in a language other than English, and the Spanish version of the song has already been the target of a fierce backlash.

"It's kind of an odd way for illegal immigrants to ask the American people to forgive them for their offenses -- to appropriate one of our symbols and make it suit them better," Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies, a think tank that supports tighter immigration controls, told CBS News correspondent Richard Schlesinger.

However, Canada's national anthem, "O, Canada," is sung in both English and French.

On Friday, Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander introduced a resolution to, in his words, "Remind the country why we sing our National Anthem in English," reports Schlesinger.

"Nuestro Himno" uses lyrics based closely on the English-language original, said Kidron, who heads the record label Urban Box Office.

In the first verse, the references to bombs and rockets have been changed to "fierce combat." However, the second stanza is almost all new, with phrases that Francis Scott Key never wrote, such as "we are equal, we are brothers."

There are four verses in the original poem.

"We hope that the President would listen to the passionate and thoughtful rendition of the anthem presented by 'Nuestro Himno' and embrace the opportunity to teach a wider audience about the American Dream," Kidron said.

Pro-immigration protests are planned around the country for Monday, and the record label is urging Hispanic radio stations nationwide to play the cut at 7 p.m. EDT Friday in a sign of solidarity. It was being distributed to stations via e-mail as an MP3 file.

A remix to be released in June will contain several lines in English that condemn U.S. immigration laws. Among them: "These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws ... let's not start a war with all these hard workers, they can't help where they were born." "

Everyone has a right to live but NOT TO BREED !

We all think we have rights to do anything we want, but the real world isn't so. And things will give and violence is the final end. Hope I don't live to see it....

I've been reading this post... (Below threshold)
mwyland:

I've been reading this post and another (http://latinmusic.wpadmin.about.com/?comments_popup=257346?comments_popup=257346) all day yesterday and now this morning.

I see that there are some hispanics that understand that this is an outrage to have the words to our National Anthem changed. But others don't have a clue. If the song was really trying to show they love our country, then they should also try to KNOW our country. You can't relate, or be a part of something that you don't even know.

The analogy that they are moving into our homes is a good one. You don't walk into someone's home to live without respecting the people that live there.

I live close to Orlando, and have lived here off and on for 20 years. In the last 20 years, it's obvious that a take-over is in play. I've been told I need to learn spanish. (This was when I worked in an area that 20 years ago was predominently white, but now is 80% spanish.) Legal or not, they live by a different culture and set of standards. I don't want to America to lose its identity. And it will.

People want to point out that we took this country from the Native Americans. Was that 500 years ago? What does saying that mean? That I should step aside and let this country be invaded by people with a different set of values?

It's now politically incorrect to say "Merry Christmas". I was in line at Walmart the other day, a LONG line, and the register next to us opened up. The hispanic woman who had been standing behind me for all this time raced in front of the registers to get to the newly opened register so she could get there before me.

I know that there are good and bad in every race. But down here, white people are very conscious of the differences between us and hispanics. This immigration wave is different from the others because of the sheer numbers and the fact that they do not have to learn English. As more and more come, businesses are forced to hire more of them to accomodate the ones that won't speak English.

I have become alienated in my own country. Bleeding hearts can say we are a free country, give us your weak and poor... But we no longer have the resources to support every one, and when I got turned down for a job that was perfect for me, (the guy basically told me, I want to hire you but I need someone that speaks spanihs), then I cannot have a bleeding heart. When I had to apply for food stamps, I counted 28 non-whites, and only 3 whites. I had a customer (a young 20 something year old male) standing at my checkout line with another young male and the one said "How did you get it?", the other said, "You just go up to the office and fill out the paperwork and tell them you're not working and they give it to you." They were talking about the food stamp card that the first one was using.

In America, it's rare to see a young white male who would think about getting welfare. Once again, I know that this one doesn't represent teh whole, but from what I saw in the food stamp line, he does respresent a lot. AS A WHOLE, the way of life they bring here, is not American and they do not even care to be American.

When I came here 20 years ago, the wages were just a little higher than where I'm from. The rent was a little higher. NOW, because of the spanish influence down here, the wages are the same or lower than where I'm from, and the rent is 3 times higher.

When they come here and are willing to live 8 people to a 3 bedroom apartment, landlords have figured out they can charge 1,000 dollars for rent. Employers don't have to offer higher wages to keep employees. I've thought about jumping on the bandwagon myself, gather up 5 people to share a 2 bedroom apartment. But Americans aren't used to living like that and don't want to give up personal space. But we will be forced to. And I will be forced to learn spanish.

What it boils down to is a lack of respect for us. And some have written in saying that this country belonged to them first. It is definitely going to be a war once again for land. And the bleeding hearts are helping them. And either they don't understand what we're giving up, or they do and it doesn't bother them.

Words are important. Business activity can't flow without communication. Words are powerful and are used for communication. The words "Merry Christmas" will always mean something to me. Now I'm being told I should say "Happy Holidays" instead. You know what? I don't have years of associations attached to "Happy Holidays". "Merry Christmas" brings to mind many years of past Christmas's where those words were given in cheer. "Happy Holidays" is alien to me. Check out what's happening in this guy's country.

"I am English and not American, but am very interested in hearing all of your views, as we have similar issues over here.
Whether you realise it or not, we are also a nation of immigrants, and have had massive influxes from the Caribbean, the Indian subcontinent, and from Africa. We have been told to 'adapt' and accept that not every one can speak English. Our Government bodies publish most of their documentation in over 20 languages and do not expect people to learn English. In fact, we only just recently introduced a bare-minimum 'citizenship course' for those who want to naturalise. We are told that we are NOT allowed to fly our flag (Neither the British Union Flag, nor the English St. Georges Cross) for fear of alienating immigrants. We are not allowed to overtly display any forms of our own customs and culture. The Xmas nativity play has in many areas been banned, or at best diluted by characters from other religions added to it.
Our Government cannot, and does not control our borders (and don't forget that we are an island) and tacitly turns a blind eye to illegal immigrants who work below the minimum wage - because that way, effectively the country DOESN'T have a minimum wage... get it? Businesses do not want a minimum wage and the Government always do what big businesses want"

Do we want that here? I'm ready to hear some solutions. We're not going to convince the bleeding hearts. So for all you out there that understand that we're going to lose a way of life, (yes, just like the native americans, cept it's through simple over population, majority rules sort of thing, instead of bloodshed), - how can this be stopped?

Read Theodore Roosevelt's v... (Below threshold)
Fred:

Read Theodore Roosevelt's views on immigrants.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith, becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." -- Theodore Roosevelt, 1907

Now there's an idea worth following.

As far as rewriting the National Anthem-EAT SH*T, BARK AT THE MOON AND DIE!
"personal note to self-dogs will be dogs."

Believe the news media if you wnat, but personally, I prefer to believe the stories from our brave soldiers instead. Ask them about the people who stop them on the street and shake their hands, ask about the schools that have been rebuilt, the hospitals...etc. Its only the nutjobs who think that they will go to heaven and get a whole shitload of virgins if they blow themselves up and take a few others.

Note to the nutjobs-Heaven has run out of virgins!

Have you ever read the Mexican laws on immigration?
Mexico has a single, streamlined law that ensures that foreign visitors and immigrants are:

• in the country legally;
• have the means to sustain themselves economically;
• not destined to be burdens on society;
• of economic and social benefit to society;
• of good character and have no criminal records; and
• contributors to the general well-being of the nation.

The law also ensures that:

• immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;
• foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;
• foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the country's internal politics;
• foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;
• foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;
• those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.

Now for all those who comply, WELCOME!! For all those who don't, read the last 4 lines above!

But really, who are we to bitch? With all the children lost in the last 20+ years to abortion in this country, who is left for the basic jobs now being completed by these people?

Ponder wisely grasshopper.

The fact is that land changes in hand. And the loser is either get killed, abused, or moved away. The land was taken with blood. Whoever wants it must pay by blood. That was the old way.

If the hispanics can over populate America, kudos to them. But I want to stay in the land that the European immigrants have carved out and established a strong nation.

True, this nation was a land that says "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses...". But folks, America is no longer a rising nation. America is an established nation. America is a supper power. The America today is not the America of the past in every sense. This whole country has been made up of immigrants. I think it is a very good way for them to show support for the immigrants by making this song. Most of the immigrants who come to this country come to help people and there families back in their country were otherwise they would have a harder time than they all ready do. And most immigrants legal or not help our economy by doing jobs that other American citizen wouldn't do.
So none of this taking our jobs Sh*t. The things you have to do to become a citizen r hard like the test, most people could not pass it. And it can take years to become a citizen and by that time if you had registerd to become one they would have already kicked you out of the country for being here too long without being a citizen.
And so much of American culture has been adapted from othe countries.
And America has become overall so corrupt an sh*t its sooo rediculous and being american is not all somthing to be real proud of at the moment. And most of the ppl here are jus totaly oblivious and almost brianwashed and pumped full of fear and lies by the news and sh*t that they just do and agree with what there told without asking questions. But thats a whole nother thing.
Spanish and other hispanic stuff is part of ppls culture that makes them unique its somthing in families and traditions unlike the oh so american tradition of what sitting on ur fat a** 2gether watching football

To Tom Lefebvre: u dont say lets no have cinco de mayo cuz that is stupid that is part of mexican heritage and culture and just Like jewish people would celebrate a Hanukka or sunthin Mexicans will celebrate cinco de mayo. I hope ppl like you dont come out of their houses at all on Cinco De Mayo.

I cannot believe we are going to allow 11 million law breakers to stay in our country. Wait... try 30 million illegals!

America's education system has been detroyed by Illegal aliens. America's liberal teachers are traders! They teach these illegals while American kids get forgotten. Why? because teachers only care about the Money$$$$ that they get for teaching illegals.

AND. Mexico's scumbag president is going to legalize drugs! Now our children will cross the border for rrugs like heroin and cocaine!

We should be at war with Mexico, not be welcoming 30 million illegal aliens!!!!!!!!!!!!\\I'm furious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My grandparents came to this country and worked VERY HARD to become citizens. They followed all the rules! THEY DID NOT ENTER ILLEGALLY AND THEN PROTEST IN THE STREETS DEMANDING TO STAY.

Selene:

i'm all for immigrants coming here and becoming LEGAL citizens, don't get me wrong. but such comments as Mari stated above is pure bullsh*t. my sister in law is a hispanic american, meaning she was not born here in America. She got her citizenship in a little less than a year, so don't sit there and tell me the legal process is so horrible and almost impossible because i know different. look, we have our laws for our reasons. you want to live here so badly and be american, THEN SHOW US BY FOLLOWING OUR LAWS!! i really could give a care less about who was here first, blah blah blah. it's in the past and should stay there. what ticks me off the most is that illegal immigrants come here and try to force our great nation to bow down to them. to those people i ask " who the hell do you think you are?"
We have never bowed down to anyone and we sure as hell shouldn't be starting now. and this song to me is just another tool used to build the already high wall between americans and mexicans. don't get me wrong, i'm not by any means racist, although i'm sure some of you are viewing me as such. when i say americans i mean legal US citizens. when i say mexicans i am referring to illegal immigrants from Mexico. So don't try and play the racist card. and someone stated above that illegal immigrants pay taxes and such.... what a laugh. please explain to me how they accomplish this. illegal immigrants do not pay taxes, they do not vote. nor do they have the right to in my opinion. if you want the name "american" then you should go about it the legal way and do what we everyday americans do. someone above also stated that white people are lazy and blah blah blah. well, i see that someone confronted that statement with saying that there are lazy whites, lazy mexicans, lazy indians, etc. and i couldn't agree more! finally i'd just like to add to the illegal immigrants here in our GREAT NATION, if you don't like our rules and our ways... YOU KNOW WHERE THE DOOR IS AND GET THE F*CK OUT!

I say have a day, week, month etc. without us (Americans) patrionizing the Latino or Spanish community. Take away your money from the stores, foods we so easily buy in the grocry stores, resturants we all frequently eat at and everything we use that is of this origin. Stop buying and drinking Coca Cola which is bottled and produced in Mexico. Your money and wealth is way people have come here to this country and asked for a better way of life. They also sell to you all of their Mexican flavored foods and have made your pallets become acustomed to their taste. NO, MEXICAN OR SPANISH BASED RESTURANTS THAT SERVE THIS KIND OF FOOD, EVEN IF THE COMPANY IS AMERICAN OWNED! (Del Taco, Taco Bell etc.) DO NOT USE THIER MAIDS AND LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU CAN CHANGE A DIAPER OR CLEAN YOUR OWN HOUSE. BUSINESSES, ASK YOUR EMPLOYEES TO HELP OUT TO KEEP THINGS RUNNING SOOMTHLY. TAKE SHIFTS IF YOU HAVE TO. LET EVERYONE KNOW IN AMERICA AND AROUND THE WROLD THAT WE HAVE THE POWER TO CONTIUNE TO BE "ONE NATION UNDER GOD" AMD THAT OUR ANTHEMS, PLEDGE OF ALLIGENCE AND ALL OTHER AMERICAN SPECIAL SONGS OR BELIEFS WE HOLD DEAR ARE NOT FOR SALE! ALL AMERICANS DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY FORM OF CINCO DE MAYO DAY!

WHEN WE CAN SUCCESSFULLY PLAN OUR WALK OUT, STRIKE OR DAY OFF THEN WE WILL BE ABLE TO STAND TALL WITHOUT BEING THOUGHT OF AS LAZY OR INCAPABLE OF DOING WHAT WE ALL ARE CAPABLE OF AND THAT IS WORKING HARD, WHEN WE NEED TO. (JUST AS WE ARE CAPABLE OF PLAYING HARD AT OUR AMERICAN SPORTS,HOLIDAY'S ETC.)

LASTLY, POUR OUT LETTERS, CALLS, ETC. OVER THE NEXT DAYS, WEEKS, AND MONTHS TO OUR POLICTIAL LEADERS AND LET THEM KNOW WE WILL NOT BE OVERCOME BY FORTUNE 500 COMPANIES GREED TO KEEP A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY. THEREFORE, THEY CAN MAKE BIG PROFITS AND DISRESPECT THE AMERICAN WORKERS WHO HAVE ALREADY GIVEN THEM 10, 15, 20, OR 30 YEARS OF OUR LIVES THROUGH GOOD HARD LABOR AND HAVE BE LOYAL TO THEM. (THEY TOO SHOULD KNOW WE ARE FED UP WITH PAYING HEALTH CARE BENEFITS THROUGH AID PROGRAMS FOR OTHERS, BUT MUST PAY FOR OUR OWN MEDICAL INSURANCE FROM OUR CHECKS THEREFORE LOWERING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR OUR FAMILIES.) We need American based health care for all Americans and we are willing to share that burden for each other so that those who have owrked hard will have insursance when they need it and not pay for foreign illegals' health care. THE JOBS AMERICANS NO LONGER DO ARE NOT BECAUSE WE ARE LAZY, IT IS BECAUSE WE TOO WORKED FOR A BETTER LIFE AND WE HAVE PAID THE DUES TO EXPECT TO BE PAID HIGHER SALARIES THEN WE RECEIVED 20 TO 25 YEARS AGO!

ARRANGE, SET UP AND HONOR YOURSELVES AND OUR CONUNTRY BY LETTING OTHERS WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE AMERICAN SPIRIT TO UNITE FOR WHAT WE BELIVE IN. THEY MUST KNOW WE TOO HAVE STRUGGLED, FOUGHT, DIED AND HELPED OUT MANY OTHER COUNTRIES AND NATIONS. YET, THROUGH IT ALL, WE WILL NOT FORGET TO HELP OURSELVES! THIS THE WORLD WILL KNOW!

I don't mind the song; I don't mind the enthusiasm for America. I do mind the changing of words and language of American history. Maybe we should change the Declaration of Independents to Spanish and change it's meaning. If the Spanish people want a song then give it another name and sing it to their music and then it is worth listening to and then they have added to the American heritage. What they have done was undermine the American people and America. America doesn't stand for the only the Spanish people, we stand for all people. I hate when I get on the phone and it says for Spanish press two. How about Chinese, what do we press to speak in Chinese. Did every one forget we buy every thing from China? What do we buy from the Spanish countries, coffee? I don't see any contributions of technological, medical or production to better the advancement for mankind. Maybe it is time to learn Chinese because they will be the world leaders in the next ten years surpassing the US economically and educationally. As Americans we are giving away our country. Half present-day US territory was once Spanish and then changed to Mexican hands with independence. Look at the history of our country and you'll see what happened in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. They were once pushed back illegaly (as with most US wars) and they are now reclaiming what's theirs. Plus, Spanish is a beautiful languague. I think we should have Spanish taught at school as a compulsory subject. I will be necessary. It's a fact of life.

This isn't about ethnicity,... (Below threshold)
JR:

This isn't about ethnicity, it's about LEGALITY.

We ARE a nation of immigrants. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to be free...." Who can blame anyone for wanting to come here? I certainly don't. It's completely logical to want to come here.

And all of those immigrants that populated our country, our ancestors, did it legally. They worked their butts off. They worked the system. They had to prove that they were healthy, that they had someone (like a family member) willing to sponsor them, had some sort of skill, a link to a job...Something that would mean that they wouldn't be a burden to society.

And they had to go through the hoops of citizenship. And they had to work hard to prove themselves.

We have people on waiting lists for YEARS wanting to come here. People who've waited and waited to get approved. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we have thousands of people here who just walked across our borders and now are demanding equality under the law when they have already broken it.

This flies in the face at what is the very foundation of our country: It's laws. The idea of the people speaking through Congressional representation or voting directly for a particular idea.

ALL of that is being disregarded. Instead of the American people directing immigration policy, instead of US deciding what we want and how we want it...ALL of it is being usurped.

If we allow this to happen, if we say "go ahead" and become citizens, what we are really doing is allowing illegal aliens to dictate what our immigration policy is.

Think about that for a moment. The will of an entire country, filled with MILLIONS of people, usurped by a group of people who werent' interested in respecting our laws in the first place. Who are going to tell US what to do??

So it's more about, 'give us rights, give us power, give us social programs, give us every damn thing that a citizen has'...withdoing any work at all! Oh, and by the way, screw the American public. Screw your laws, your legislators, your votes, your voice. WE think that we're right and we're in charge'.

Any person of any ethinic, religious or cultural background that wants to come here with good intentions, is welcome in my book. Go through the legal process and I will put my arm around your shoulder and call you 'American'.

But to do it any other way is the anthesis of what we as a country are about. You, the illegal alien, do not have the right to tell us what our immigration policy is. You do not have the rights or the voice of a citizen. You have an opinion, offer it respectfully, and we'll listen.

Meanwhile, get back to your place in the line. You get to wait and work the system like every other person wanting to come here.

As to the hispanic anthem? What 'anthem'? It's not our national anthem, it's merely a song. We already have one, the Star Spangled Banner and it's sung in English. Don't like it? Get over it.

If listening to the other song is something that you enjoy well then, viya con Dios.

But just because someone proffers an idea like that, doesn't make it a reality.

Have you ever read the Mexican laws on immigration?
Mexico has a single, streamlined law that ensures that foreign visitors and immigrants are:

• in the country legally;
• have the means to sustain themselves economically;
• not destined to be burdens on society;
• of economic and social benefit to society;
• of good character and have no criminal records; and
• contributors to the general well-being of the nation.

The law also ensures that:

• immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;
• foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;
• foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the country's internal politics;
• foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;
• foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;
• those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.

Now for all those who comply, WELCOME!! WELCOME!! WELCOME!!
For all those who don't, read the last 4 lines above!

So, the issue is that for far far too long, we've embraced and allowed folks to practically come here without much intervention/prevention. However, every taxpayer has helped pay for border patrols, and to have whatever semblance of a checkpoint in place. For us, it's a no win situation. I know there are other latino nations, but it seems like the mexicans, specifically are the ones perpetrating all this nonsense (and trying to get other ethnicities to join in). Mexicans should do something about their own homeland. Why is it so corrupt? I can't believe that a few "higher class" people make it so. Nope, it's got to be because the majority of mexicans are corrupt. Yeah, we have corrupt americans, but somehow they are kept in check because the rest of us know what is right, or eventually agree on what is right. And all this mexican drama is just not right. I am afraid that a 'race war' or genocide thing will occur. I am terrified because of my tanned skin, I could sometimes be mistaken for a dumb mexican. Truth be told the people who are to blame here are the idiots organizing this whole mess. I don't have a problem with Mexicans, or any other immigrants. My issue is not about race, that would be dumb I'm latino.

I think the problem here is that a few idiots, and you know who you are, are ruining it for everyone. So SHUT UP!. Stop saying stupid stuff like "Go home" or "Lets take over the White House" or "my parents came here illegally but they didn't do anything wrong". And finally the one that pisses me off the most, "We had the land first".

What we should be doing is figuring out how to solve the problem instead of pointing fingers and calling names. We have a real problem here. There are hundreds of thousands of people coming every year, that we don't know about. We need to stop that. Especially if they're not looking for work.

Of the 12 million plus already here, what do we do with them? I for one say we treat it on a case by case basis. Keep the ones with a family that have been here the longest, and send the rest back.

Finally how do we prevent people from being enticed to come here. Start enforcing lawas already in place for companies that hire illegals. Fine them some crazy amount like $100K for each illegal. You'll see how quickly things will change.

Now that the 'boycott' has come and gone, it's really only enlightened the folks who thought this was another 'sweep under the rug' issue. YES, there are more pressing issues facing this country and the world at large, but the fact remains that we have over 12 million illegal alines in the this country-- not immigrants. Immigrants are those that come from other countries, and become legal citizens of this country. Who should we really blame? the last 4 administrations who have done nothing, or should we blame Ted Kennedy who gutted the amnesty act in the 80's.... Actually we ought to blame ourselves for not doing anything as voting, tax paying, legal, authenticate, realia Americans. Of all the folks I know who are from Latin America, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Cuba... none believe it's simply OK to just come here and live uncheked.
What has happened, in education for example, is that citizens are denied the oppurtunity to grow and to learn properly, and instead teachers, educators and districts are 'required' to accept students into the district without question, legal or not. I know from personal experience that one family intends to bring over 40 of their family from Mexico to settle in the midwest... What???
If you're not legal, don't come!!! Simple as that. I care that you are hard working, that you have families, and that you like me experience all the good times and bad times that all people go through.. HOWEVER, our 14th amendment does nothing to mention that it's LEGAL to come to the United States and simply just stay here. The Congress should write the law to make it to be a dismeanor, and then give those that ARE here illigally to make a decision. YOUR COUNTRY is the one that screwed you, not the United States, and YOUR COUNTRY is the one that favors drug trade and illegal and corrupt government over taking care of it's own!!! What is the most appalling is that to demonstrate shows to the citizens that the immigrant population really isn't in touch with itself, or what this country is all about.

He's wrong, as usual....something about this administration and disobeying laws or voluntarily ignoring research like it's the clap.

In 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Education commissioned a Spanish-language version of "The Star Spangled Banner."

The State Department's website also features four-separate versions of the anthem in Spanish.

Todd Bostwick:

Dear Begonia,

What is most disgusting is the re-wording of it, and that fact it was deliberately timed with the May 1st (unaffectual) boycott! More threatening to most of us, more than anything else, was seeing viseo after video and image after image of Mexicans (mostly illegals I'm sure) fingering and flipping off the police who were there to do THEIR job; which is to protect everyone. When WE (those that are LEGAL citizens) and no matter where we're from, SEE this kind of action, IT WILL cause a reaction. IF, those that are here illegally believe that telling cops to *uck off, eat *hit and die is the way we like to be treated, then keep it up. We don't want a civil war, but keep pressing those buttons, and inciting disrespect for the country you're standing in and just leave... Once the BENEFITS goldmine is cut off, most will have to go. Once the corporations are fined for hiring cheap and illegal labor, then most will go home. Once they have to wait for 1-6 years to become a citizen, most will go home.
What I don't hear, is what you and many others did to protest to the Mexican government while there, or what activist things we're done to change the way folks are living down there. NO one has carried on the history of helping the people in Mexico, as in it's past history-- THAT'S SHAMEFUL!!! NO AMNESTY! NO WAY! Become a citizen, as it is written and passed by us, or face the consequences...make sure it's done correctly, humanely, and working with the Mexican government (who, I doubt wiil sit on it's ASS once again!) After 13 million chances to do the right thing, American citizens have a right to change and require a difference in life within their country, no matter the cause!!! It's too bad that all the illegal folks that are here will have little to no say in that decision, simply because they don't have the right to !!!

Dear Robert Johnson,... (Below threshold)
Todd Bostwick:

Dear Robert Johnson,
Perhaps perception is different for you, but you seem to think that we only are blaming the immigrant who are here. Instead and including those immigrants, laws need to be put in place to make it more difficult than to just walk across the border. NO OTHER COUNTRY in the world allows so many folks to enter unchecked. What does this do to our schools, our tax base, our wages? Diversity and multi-clutaralism only come into part of it, and only after you refer to those that are here the right way, and legally. With many friends and family that are of Hispanic-American heritage, the vast majority thinks it's disrespectful to show disfavor by 'boycotting'. It won't achieve a thing. What they should be protesting is the employers who make billions off their sweat and blood, or those that are killed because of increasingly violent and bloddy battles in cities and towns on the border. It has nothing to do with anything else except enough is enough and our country cannot continue to let folks in, without checks and balances, and still our country to function well FOR ALL AMERICANS>
Perhaps wisdom and perception from others will help guide you to a more common sense approach.

If we break those laws we pay the price. For citizens that means jail for illegals that means exportation. It's not that America does not value or want immigrants. The issue is that any immigration to this country should be done in a manner so that we can atleast track who it is that is coming into the country.

If you leave your front door open and allow people to come and go from your house as they please, you might get lucky and have someone come through that will help you out by helping you to make improvements to your house. But more often than not all you're going to get is someone who wants to steal from you or worse yet kill you.

That's why I keep my house locked up and have a bell at the front door. If I don't want someone there I can just not let them in. I'm not just for securing the boarder with Mexico I'm for securing ALL our boarders. We need to know who is coming and going all around.

As for karma no I don't believe in it. I believe that God is the ultimate judge of good and evil, and that one day we will all be accountable to him.

For right now though I want to make sure that my family is safe, my country is safe, and the laws which so many have died upholding are kept. I also want to make sure that anyone who is in this country can appreciate the blessings we have here, and frankly you cannot appreciate something you don't work for if you just steal it.

Are the Mexican people hard workers yes. Are they good people? I'm pretty sure most of them are. Did those who are here illegally break the law to get here? Yes. Should they be penilized by paying back taxes, and waiting for citizenship like everyone else who came before them? Of course they should it's only fair.

Why didn't they just sing this version? This is authentic, untouched and in Spanish.

Well put.. and too bad for folks like MrJohnson, who himself seems like a reclusive snail living in a glass house. Foreboding are his words; not sure if he'd know an illegal if he saw one. AND NO !!! We're talking about those that are nice, sincere, hard-working people who are truly working to better themselves... with one BIG obstacle in their way, and that's their citizenship and the fact that they're breaking the law and enough is enough.. it should have been addressed over 4 administrations ago, when the issue was first causing problems.

People tend to pick and choose segments of United States history to support their cause. I hope no one uses the genocide of Native Americans as a tradition they desire to emulate. This statement is what it all boils down to, "However, to do so without any regard for our immigration laws and to later demand full rights and American citizenship is unacceptable." Over 300 years worth of my ancestors came to this country, and all did it legally. Many came for the exact same reasons that today's illegal immigrants are coming. But they had honor and followed the legal process. Quite frankly, if this new "tradition" of skipping the process continues and is promoted by our government, I think I'll go back to the old country... that is if Sweden accepts me as someone with the qualities they desire in their citizens. Being American, I might not get in.

commonsense:

The american indians deserved to live but they also deserved indoctrination. If a tribe of humans live like animals one should not simply respect that and let them go, it is our responsiblity to educate all fairly and make them civilized. Otherwise ignorance is bliss and science and society dies to individualism ....
That's why I'm Agnostic, I think a pre-concieved notion of any kind is wrong when it is somthing that you have no proof of and contridicts many. And culture and language goes with this too, another conflict in societies.
Man must learn that we must work togethor as one and stop doing things for the sake of doing them as before.
I dream of science one day creating a new race of human that is a combination of all, and one language agreed upon that is easy to learn and makes sense...otherwise history will repeat itself like the american indians killing off the people before them, us killing them later, and someone killing us in the future...etc..etc ...

MDiaz:

How did the American Indians live like animals? Because they only killed what they ate, or because they didn't alter the terrain of the earth by chopping down every tree and poluting every stream? Wow that's really barbaric of them.

The fact is the early settlers had one job, and one job only as Christians. They were supposed to tell them about God, and let them decide. Not beat God into them. There was no need for the bloodshed that caused so many lives. That was not God that was greed.

I am a Christian and I believe I have a duty to tell people about Christ, but I don't force anyone to accept my beliefs. Christ said "I stand at the door and knock" not "I've just kicked your door in now listen".

I do agree that we have to work together to try and make this world better, but I also know that without God it's a pointless act.

I have to agree with the notion that Mexicans and other latino groups base our economy. I also know that the constitution of the United States will permit it. However, most of the people who post comments on this website really deface their people by their racist remarks towards "white people" and their cursing! A previous post, by Ana, really infuriated me! She is trying to fight racism and defend her people yet she hypocritically curses "white people" ... As long as idiots like her, President Bush, and all the other racists are alive than I doubt peace, equality, and unity can be attained.

Thats all.
