Take a look at La Academia Semillas del Pueblo, a public charter school in LA.
Check out the school's purpose:
Academia Semillas del Pueblo Charter School is a kindergarten through eighth grade public school dedicated to providing urban children of immigrant native families an excellent education founded upon their own language, cultural values and global realities.
Global realities? And what might those be?
And take at look at this school's supporters:
National Council of La Raza Charter School DevelopmentRaza Development Fund, Inc.
Glendale Nissan/Infinity, Inc.
California State University, Los Angeles
Pasadena City College - MEChA
The Latino Museum of History, Art and Culture
The Nissan/Infinity dealership is an odd one.
Michelle Malkin has done a thorough job of covering exactly who MEChA and La Raza are here and here.
The principal of the school, Marcos Aguilar, was interviewed by Maribel Santiago of Teaching to Change LA on his views of Brown vs. Board of Education, Topeka. Link via KABC.
TCLA: Finally, what do you see as the legacy of the Brown decision?
MA: If Brown was just about letting Black people into a White school, well we don't care about that anymore. We don't necessarily want to go to White schools. What we want to do is teach ourselves, teach our children the way we have of teaching. We don't want to drink from a White water fountain, we have our own wells and our natural reservoirs and our way of collecting rain in our aqueducts. We don't need a White water fountain. So the whole issue of segregation and the whole issue of the Civil Rights Movement is all within the box of White culture and White supremacy. We should not still be fighting for what they have. We are not interested in what they have because we have so much more and because the world is so much larger. And ultimately the White way, the American way, the neo liberal, capitalist way of life will eventually lead to our own destruction. And so it isn't about an argument of joining neo liberalism, it's about us being able, as human beings, to surpass the barrier.
This school is not interested in teaching its students how to assimilate into American culture. Instead, it's teaching these kids how to hate America and everything it stands for.
Hot Air is also blogging.
Update: Stunt Shack has personal knowledge of MeCHA.

I can support this. This is how a market place of education works. There will be a school that emphasizes the three R's and one that won't give out grades because they promote competitiveness. If this schoolcan prepare students for the world better by sipping from their own spring, rather than the "Whites only" water fountain, great. I suspect that it will fail and the students will be worse off in the real world. But then the NEA thinks that about charter schools in general. Let informed education consumers have a choice and overall we will benefit.
Now to the extent they try this in the public schools, I am opposed to it.

Really, is it? Tell me, is Democracy worth it? If you were to choose between a Theocracy and a Democracy which would you choose...and if you chose the latter what would you do to get it when your negotiation and appeasment were found to be lacking bargaining chips?

No America is doing no such thing. Could you enlighten us as to how these poeple are corrupt and just how they're profiting from the war?

No, this "Global Reality" probably has nothing to do with the balefully ignorant, force-fed and obediently regurgitated lies and slanted opinions you vomited up above. So why don't you stay on subject and spare us your hysterical, glassy eyed chanting.

Why is it just accepted that they have 'their own language', but it's unacceptable that America has it's own language? If they can have their own 'cultural values', can America have its own cultural values?
If they admit that they have different values than us, and they want to keep those differences, is it wrong for America to affirm our own culture and want to keep it? Why is it o.k. for one but not the other?

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but can you even DO something like this with a public school and taxpayer funds?
I guess I can see the appeal from the parental side, and the website makes the school seem harmless enough. However, the us vs. them language concerns me - can you imagine the lessons that will be ingrained into these kids? If JPM is right about this not being an occasional oddity, what might happen when these kids get old enough to vote or run a business?

Today (6/1), KFI sent one of its reporters to the school to try to get an interview with the principal, Marcos Aguilar.
The reporter was assaulted, first with a car, and then by the driver of the car, who tackled the reporter and demanded his tape (which had nothing on it).
So far, no comment either from the school or from LAUSD - the parent organization, the one that approved the charter.

To the first postor, yetanotherjohn - I disagree that schools should be a buyer beware situation. Too many parents are clueless, and the children suffer for it.
I had to take my daughter out of one of a charter school that had a heavy socialist agenda. Half the students parents didn't speak English (I know. I was a room parent there), and without many guidelines other than their no competition philosophy the school was a chaotic mess...and the children suffered.
About this whole separatist thing - as a kid raised during the '70s with MLK's dream of a colorblind society, I just shake my head. We can thank the diversity crowd for harping on our colors rather than our characters.

First of all to all the racist ignorant comments.....I am deeply saddened to be awakended to the reality that people who are closed minded and still see us as minorities exist...Yes this school is funded by public funds..and by tax payer money..Yes of course... My taxes and my parents taxes and the parents taxes of the students at the school. Yes we CHicanos, Mexican Americans do work and pay taxes.....ANd as a matter of fact when these children graduate they will not graduate knowing how to work a lawnmower or how to mopp your floors..since its in our nature to be well mannered and skilled enough to survive in a world where we dont need to have people do our SHIT for us..BUt with AA degrees more than what some of you have. The school is great It does not teach hate towards America and it is not a school for just Mexicans...Their are various other races enrolled...As the gorwing majority it is inevetable that there would be more Chicanos enrolled. What year are we in? 2006 yet it feels like the 60's all over..Chicano MOvememtn Part 2 here we come...YOuve witnessed the Blowouts........The Wlakouts..Well be ready for the rest...Were getitn geducated...Were getting high paying jobs......were are better qualified that some and were running the City! Denise is right about one thing. The illegal immigrants are getting educated, getting higher paid jobs, even getting state tuition at universities without having to pax taxes. This is why it is even more critical that we enforce the immigration laws NOW. Forget all the nonsense they try to convince you with about only taking jobs Americans wont do...
