Peggy Noonan: Washington Democrats Think Their Core Voters are Barking Mad

Peggy Noonan had an interesting column on Thursday, one which I missed but Power Line directed me to. In her piece she writes that both parties aren't crazy about their bases, but the Democrats are in a bad way.

I got a sense of the distance between Democratic leaders and the base a few years ago when I met up with a Democrat who was weighing a run for the party's 2004 nomination. He hadn't announced but was starting to test the waters, campaigning out of state

I mentioned to him that the press gives a great deal of attention to the problems of Republican leaders and their putative supporters on the ground in America, but I was interested in the particular problems a D.C. Democrat has with his party's base.

His eyebrows went up in the way people's eyebrows go up when they're interested in what they're about to say. He said--I write from memory; it was not an interview but a conversation--that he was getting an education in that area. He said when he spoke before local Democratic groups they were wildly against the war in Iraq and sometimes booed him when he spoke of it. It left him startled. He had supported the president for serious reasons: He thought Saddam a bad actor who likely had weapons of mass destruction. He wanted to talk about it, but they didn't want to hear him. They were immovable.

But there was something else. He didn't say it, but something in his manner suggested he thought they were . . . just a little crazy.

Not surprising that she would "catch" such a mannerism. Miss Piggy...er Peggy ought to know, as she is the past-mistress at screwing up her face & eyebrows as she enunciates in her oh so slightly nuanced accent when it comes to punctuating something she's about to say that she just knows is a gem. Sort of a mannerism-modified Buckley.

Kind of off topic? but what the hell, if facial mannerisms are fair game I guess this is too.

Al superior moon god icon Aymen Al Zawahiri just charged in His latest tryout for Al Jazeera that Bush is a liar and a coward because He killed Zarqawi?

Now where have i heard these things before? hmmmmm.

It took a few days of wondering where you had disappeared to but I continued to notice a similar vein of inane, illiterate & silly remarks just like the ones made by the now apparently defunct Virgo1, but these were now coming from a "new" 914.

Welcome home in your new incarnation, you clever astrologer.

I am not buying it. The Democratic leadership is every bit as kooky as their base. They are sometimes more prudent in masking their true colors, but when caught in unguarded moments, you get the sense that they are just what Ann Coulter described: treasonous.

I don't know what this means, but it sounds hot. Gives me the image of a kick-ass concert with some dancing honeys. I'd love to be in a field full of Bouncing Bettys.

Something in his manner? LOL I guess if you are Peggy Noonan, or bloggers who link to Peggy Noonan, a feeling --- a suggestion by a little something in his manner (lol, sorry) is enough to create a headline like "Washington Democrats Think Their Core Voters are Barking Mad"

No wonder you put that drivel at the bottom of the article. Had it been at the top those of average intelligence would know to click off and read something else, and not waste their time with Peggy Noonan's hallucinations.

Disagree Jeff. Well, mostly as I'm sure there are a handful of nutjobs. No, I think most of the political leadership in DC aren't crazy or intelligent--they are just power driven. They will say or do anything to achieve or retain power even if they have to pander to the nutjob faction.

It's why you have a John Kerry saying in 2003 that cutting and running would be a political ploy and the wrong thing to do and in 2006 calling for a vote to do exactly that. Kerry doesn't actually HAVE an opinion or position....he is just mouthing what he thinks will get him the most votes.

Oh, no you don't. Unless of course, you don't mind being blown in half a bunch of times.

Bouncing Bettys are particularly nasty because of the "oh shit" lag time before you are dead.
