Here at Wizbang we value political speech so much that we strive daily to give all sides a chance to speak for themselves. Dear readers, may I present the up and coming face of the Democrat party:
Murtha says U.S. poses top threat to world peace
MIAMI -- American presence in Iraq is more dangerous to world peace than nuclear threats from North Korea or Iran, Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., said to an audience of more than 200 in North Miami Saturday afternoon.
Murtha was the guest speaker at a town hall meeting organized by Rep. Kendrick B. Meek, D-Miami, at Florida International University's Biscayne Bay Campus. Meek's mother, former Rep. Carrie Meek, D-Miami, was also on the panel.
War veterans, local mayors, university students and faculty were in the Mary Ann Wolfe Theatre to listen to the three panelists discuss the war in Iraq for an hour.A former Marine and a prominent critic of the Bush administration's policies in Iraq, Murtha reiterated his views that the war cannot be won militarily and needs political solutions. He said the more than 100,000 troops in Iraq should be pulled out immediately, and deployed to peripheral countries like Kuwait.
If you believe the the U.S. military is more of a threat to world peace that a nuclear North Korea or Iran then by all means, please vote Democrat in 2006.
Update: There was a correction to the Sun Sent Story:
Correction: An article in Sunday's editions misinterpreted a comment from U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., at a town hall meeting in North Miami on Saturday. In his speech, Murtha said U.S. credibility was suffering because of continued U.S. military presence in Iraq ,and the perception that the U.S. is an occupying force. Murtha was citing a recent poll, by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, that indicates a greater percentage of people in 10 of 14 foreign countries consider the U.S. in Iraq a greater danger to world peace than any threats posed by Iran or North Korea.
What he actually said is unknown. It's been reported that his press office has audio of it and won't release it. Muthra complained his quote was out of context and the correction appears to back that to some dergee. What is unknown is -well- the context. If the Sun Sent reporter didn't have audio to fall back on, they have no choice but to take Murtha at his word.
Murtha of course, could release the tape and put the whole thing to rest. Odd that he won't.

I have a question: why do they always say it like "more than 200 people". Is that supposed to sound more impressive?
So the Dem's cannot get more than 299 people to show up at a town hall meeting? Murtha's idiotic statements aside, this is hilarious!!!!
This party has no momentum. Zip, zero, nada. And this guy is becoming a leading speaker for them? Someone wake me up. This is TOO good to be true.

this is no way a refutation, but here is another article that makes no mention of Murtha calling the US more dangerous than Iran and NK
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/local/states/florida/counties/broward_county/14896189.htm
the article you link to provides no quote supporting that statement. That statement is definitely wrong, but not providing the quote, especially when other quotes from Murtha were used, makes this somewhat suspect.

kirktoe ~ You don't understand how these estimates work. When they say there were "more than 200 people" there, it does NOT mean there were between 200 and 299. That is what they want you to think. In reality, the range is closer to 125 - 175 to qualify as "more than 200."
If there were actually more than 200, they would have said "nearly 300," or - more likely - "over 300." Or even, "a crowd estimated at over 1000."
You don't seem to be up on your Million Man Math . . .

This goofy story is being investigated as I write. Murtha never said any such thing, not in Miami, not anywhere else, not ever. Look for Arizona Star and Sun-Sentinel to publish the appropriate corrections in their papers. Knight Rider picked up this story over the weekend. They'll drop it like a hot potato in the next couple hours. Elizabeth Baier, the author of this story, will be wondering what the big deal is about making up stuff and reporting it as news. If anyone here has contacts at The National Enquirer, perhaps now would be a good time to email her. I suspect she's going to need a new job soon. Write condolences and "buck up!" note to her at: ebaier@sun-sentinel.com

Three major points:
1) As someone mentioned above, there are no quote marks. A transcript would be very helpful in establishing both the actual quote and some context here.
2) Even if this is a direct quote, nuclear threats from Iran or North Korea aren't very dangerous. North Korea and Iran are both so outgunned and unpopular that their leadership would never survive if they attempted a nuclear strike. While the argument is often made that North Korea or Iran could manufacture and sell nukes to terrorist groups, I've never seen either country threaten to do so.
3) The continued American presence in Iraq is creating terrorists worldwide faster than we're wiping them out in Iraq. Killing Al-Zarqawi certainly doesn't seem to have slowed down Al-Qaeda. Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, the new leader of the Iraqi branch, seems to be just as dangerous as Al-Zarqawi was, given the recent executions of the Russian Embassy workers and the captured US Soldiers.
Also, the current headline on Drudge Report: "Murtha says US is top threat to world peace" is even less accurate. It's a shame that so many people straw man such important issues and avoid actual debate.

I love how this is always presented as a factual statement though there is little to no evidence of it. Wishing won't make it so. Terrorists existed BEFORE we went to Iraq and thinking if we left they would disappear is just being intellectually dishonest.
So, Bob, I reject your statement in totality as a made up fantasy. Keep cheering for the terrorists. Perhaps, when Hamza is captured/killed and you guys start squawking about how he wasn't that important we can remind you how you are presently claiming he is a significant threat.
Then again, you'll just re-write history again and move the goal posts.....again and again and again like any other Leftist, lying sycophant willing to sacrifice the country for another shot at power.

Last Sunday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel made an error in reporting Rep. John Murtha's comment about American presence being the most dangerous to world peace.
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/ news/ local/ broward/ sfl-ctownhall25jun25,0,7119684.story
In Elizabeth Baier's opening sentence she states:
"American presence in Iraq is more dangerous to world peace than nuclear threats from North Korea or Iran, U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., said to a crowd of more than 200 in North Miami Saturday afternoon."
This statement is completely false. Rep. Murtha mentioned American presence in terms of an international poll. This was not Murtha's thought, but the results of polling done in other countries.
Journalistic propriety demands a retraction.
Thank you,

As of the date and time stamp of this posting the following is correct:
The original first paragraph written by Elizabeth Baier at the Sun-Sentinel has been removed. Since their original correction to their story and my constant vigilance and the constantly updated reporting at theinfozone.net, they have rewritten this entire original article.
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/broward/sfl-ctownhall25jun25,0,7119684.story
What distinguishes this as unique is that though newspapers certainly update stories all the time, but when doing so, they are required by standard journalism practice to make clear it's a revision, stating prominently at the top this story is a revision and updating the date of the article to the date of the revision. They have done neither.
Any impression created by this posting that this indicates that the Sun-Sentinel is covering up what they started by making all the uproar of this week over something that "never happened" is not my intent here. (legal disclaimers have become necessary)
Wait until you hear the new development today. The video of Murtha's speech in Miami has been released.
