So close, yet so far

This morning's Boston Globe has a column by H. D. S. Greenway on the current blowup between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and by some miracle he actually makes sense through most of it. But then, towards the end, the fact that he writes for the Glob sinks in, and he reverts to form.

Greenway succumbs to the classic tactic of moral relativism, equating the Palestinians and the Israelis, citing each of their misdeeds and trying to balance them out, saying that since they've both been bad, both should share an equal portion of the blame. Here's the money paragraph:

When Hamas won the election, would it have been better not to withhold tax money collected from the Palestinians in the hopes of bankrupting the democratically elected government? Would it have been more productive, in the long run, for Israel and the West to have cut the new Hamas government a little slack to see if actually running a country would make them more pragmatic?

In a word, Mr. Greenway, no, it would not have been better.

Yes, Hamas was democratically elected. But they ran on a "war" platform, reaffirming their clearly-stated goal of the extermination of "the Zionist entity." They pledged more violence, more death, more destruction on Israel. To then offer a hand of friendship to someone who just won election based on their commitment to Israel's destruction would be suicidal.

I, personally, hoped that seeing just how much international support (read: charity) Hamas would get after taking the reins of power would make them more pragmatic, but that didn't work out too well, either. Instead, we get the next-best thing: the distinct chance that the terror elements will erupt into a civil war, and try killing each other for a change.

Works for me...

Suicidal? Pointless maybe, maybe even a total waste of time, but how would it have been "suicidal"?

Lee,
Just go to Iraq to find the AlQ terrorists, whom you have been trying to give propaganda support, and to extend your friendship to them just to show how pointless or how suicidal that exercise is.
BTW, it 's worth mentioning that Lee has been caught red-handed in Haditha smear of the US military and try to deny the 9/11 terrorist attack. He is still determined to forge ahead with his far left lies.

How about we let the Taliban run in Afghanistan, Nazis run in Germany, Kahanists run in Israel, and Baathists run in Iraq?

Oh. Right. Those countries prohibit violent rejectionist "political parties" by law.

Just as Oslo prohibited Hamas from running. Not that Condi Rice or George Bush care, it seems.

McCain:

Actually, Hamas didn't run on a "war" platform. In fact, it was surprising that the language contained in their charter calling for the destruction of Israel was removed (disengenuously, to be sure) from their compaign platform. They did affirm their desire to create a Palestinian state, which is what everyone wants now, and to do it by all means possible which was left undefined. It was an intentionally ambiguious platform about violence which enabled them to expand their support enough to get 44% of the vote.

This view isn't meant to distract from the larger point, which is that it was correct to put the financial squeeze on the Hamas government. You cannot change the spots on a leopard, as they say, even one that is running for office.

Lee, it is not possible to give any of your comments any serious consideration. Why? You criticize this site as being consistently, ignorantly and blindly supportive of the Bush Administration. Hence, in your eyes, almost all of what is posted here is without any merit. OK, that's fine by me. Of course, your consistently self-righteous stand emanates from the mind of someone who is rigidly opposed to all things even tangentially associated with the current administration. You are entitled , but all in all, you are exactly the same as those you criticize - the ONLY difference is that their viewpoint differs. I suggest you should consider adding to your posts where appropriate something like: "you are welcome to that view, but here is what MY plan would look like (or how the Democrats would approach this problem)....". After all it's the least you could do as the self-appointed clarion of the opposing view on this site.

The Thread is interesting--neither Israel nor the Palestinians won the "war" between them. What if Hamas and the other groups wage jihad on themselves, and end up doing Israel, and the rest of us, a favor?

WORD, Mitchell, you finally got something right! It's about time.

Seriously, if you guys who stalk me on these threads calling me names think your blabber is ever going to convince me that you have half a brain between your ears - think again. The mere fact that some of you are obsessed with following me around sniping at me and the other "lefties" show just how much of a loser you are, ignoring the fact that you loudly support the failed policies of the self-serving Republican administration.

If you think I even read half of what you write then you're more stupid than you sound. And, since you're too dense to figure it out let me give you a clue. I comment a lot less when there aren't comments directed at me to respond to.

That won't stop people like LoveAmerica Idiot and Mesablue and Mitchell from constantly writing comments directed at me, but maybe you smarter ones will catch on....

Since you can't stop blabbering, despite your recent medication increase, why don't you explain to everyone here how I have been caught red-handed twice.... Be specific, and include links to back up your claims -- I'm sure you've got the links saved in your little cigar box of treasures.... along with the marbles you lost some time ago.

After following me around for weeks you now have the floor LoveAmerica - show us what you're made of.

Which engineers are those, Kathy? This is the first I've heard that there were engineers involved in the planning of the 9/11 attack.

Engineers in al-Qaeda?

Hmm, you mean like Khalid Shaikh Mohammed?

What's that, he never got an engineering degree? Hmm, that's not what wikipedia, the Washington Post, or the LA Times discovered, when they were doing research on him.

We send nearly as much to Egypt, who needs it even less. Israel, for all of its piddling faults, is the best country in that part of the world.
