Hostages to fate

With the increasing tensions and violence in Lebanon, there are calls for the United States government to intervene, at least enough to help American citizens trapped to escape to safety. With Israel systematically isolating Lebanon, hoping to trap Hezbollah within the nation and keep their kidnapped soldiers from being taken to another country, the ready points of exit are all being closed down.

I expect that the United States Navy will play a major role. As has happened before in other nations, I see the Navy moving an amphibious assault group to the coast of Lebanon, sending forces ashore to secure an evacuation area, and then taking civilians out to the ships -- with, most likely, the full knowledge and blessing of both Israel and Lebanon.

The one thing that worries me is that these two governments are not the only players in this game. In fact, the Lebanese government is not even one of the major players.

Hezbollah holds no great love for the United States. Back in 1982, they scored what was arguably their greatest victory when they blew up the Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 242 Americans and leading to the US withdrawing from Lebanon in defeat. As others have noted, roughly a third of the US' Most Wanted Terrorists list represents Hezbollah. The idea of a whole group of hated Americans, the nation that arms and encourages the Zionist State currently kicking Hezbollah's ass, would be just sitting there would be a tremendously tempting target -- for either kidnapping or killing.

And is there anyone who thinks that Hezbollah would pass on such an opportunity?

I feel a great deal of sympathy for the innocent people of Lebanon -- and I know that a lot of them are, indeed, innocent. And I fear for my fellow citizens who are trapped there now. Their safety depends on, in large part, the mercy and sanity of Hamas -- two commodities I believe to be in very short supply.

I would expect the evacuation party to include a security contingent of US Marines, which means there will be precious little kidnapping or killing of Americans going on. This time, the Marines' weapons will be loaded, and the ROE will let them fire to defend themselves, instead of waiting until it's too late. I was in the AF, going to tech school with Navy and Marines in October of 1983. Believe you me, every one of them not still in would suit up in a heartbeat for a shot at avenging their brothers. The Semper in Semper Fi applies to memories, as well. Once that sccore is settled, I believe we still have a bone to pick with a former Iranian 'student' named Amhadinnerjacket.

The appalling lack of doing something to the terrorist started with carter-the-carpenter (not) and continued all the way to W where the buck stopped. Now he has to clean up their messes.

The ROEs in 1st Beirut will not be repeated and every Jarhead remembers.

If it's an amphibious assault group that's sent... that'll be the SAFEST place to be. You see... amphibious assault groups are loaded to the gills with heavily armed US Marines.

Dear Jay,

After reading what you feel for innocent people of Lebanon. I would like to say sorry- for my past rude comments. I thought some wrong things about you.
I am sorry to have said some bad things.
However now I feel I made a huge sin by saying those things.
Please accept it, and let us work together to build peace together. In Isarael now- should stop and also Hezbollah should stop.
If nothing is done now, things will keep becoming worse. A day will come when we will kill each other for every small thing.
These people both sides should become humans

I also wish the ALL the peoples of the Middle East TRUE Peace!!

But peace is NOT the absence of WAR (as the VERY true saying goes).

The Middle East has not had TRUE peace in...well...uh...ever? Certainly not since 1948...and really not before that either.

True peace will ONLY be achieved when everybody acknowledges everyone else's right to exist!

Israel was in the process of shrinking back to the 1948 border hoping this would bring peace..it hasn't. It hasn't because there are still several countries and a whole lot of terrorists that do NOT recognize Israel's right to even exist.

Until that happens the ONLY peace will through superior firepower. Israel is urging every non-terrorist to step aside and hide...while they kill everyone else. I think tomorrow may see the start of the ground assault to do just that!

We don't believe your taqiyya or any other BS you spout. Nice try though, but most folks see through your BS and know just who you are.
