The Big Picture

Pamela at Atlas Shrugs published a letter she received from a US Marine stationed in Iraq who put the war between Israel and Hezbollah/Hamas into a larger perspective. Here's a portion:

I just wanted to tell you that we, Marines, SUPPORT Israel in their war against Hamas and Hizbullah. I cannot express to you how many Marines I have talked to or have heard say how proud of Israel they are.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that Israel is destroying Hamas and Hizullah. We all CHEER when we watch Lebanon being bombed on TV in the Chow Hall. I hope Israel annihilates Hamas, Hizbullah and Syria. Because the way we see it, that is less Jihadists for us to fight. I can't speak for all Marines, but the Marines that I know and talk to stand by Israel 100%. And I am in the infantry, we are front line Marines. Warriors. We support Israel because we have fought the same people they are fighting, Jihadists. This is a world war. It has been a world war simsince 11 September 2001. Hopefully now people are realizing the true scale of this conflagration. And Israel is fighting the same enemy in Gaza and Lebanon as America is fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, just on another front in the same war. And we see the Israeli Soldiers as brothers in arms against a common enemy. Myself and the Marines in my unit, Veterans of 2 tours in Iraq, support Israel all the way to victory. And I THANK the State of Israel for their determination, fortitude and vigilance in the destruction of Evil.
God Bless America.
God Bless Israel.
And God Bless all freedom loving people worldwide.

- US Marine and Veteran of the current world war.

The foot soldier is generally not the right person to provide "big picture" analysis of our geopolitics. There is no hope of "destroying" Hamas or Hezbollah by what Israel is doing here, and it is far from clear it is in our own strategic interests although time will tell. However, anything that helps morale among our brave men is a good thing, and so it is encouraging to read this post from that perspective.

I see a whole lot more common sense from the Marine than those whining about "what Israel is doing here." Especially without offering alternatives.

McCain:

Was I whining? The alternative is to decapitate the Syrian and Iranian governments rather than misdirecting their efforts at Lebanon. They are trying hard to pull them into the conflict but it doesn't appear to be working. Meanwhile, what Israel is doing here to make that gambit is bomb a half-Christian strategic ally of the United States into the stoneage. That very well might be worth the attempt to Israel, but it is probably bad for us and clearly bad for our Lebanese ally.

No they're not. These strikes are strategic, not punitive. The Israelis are blocking the exits. Normally, Hizb'allah would sneak away if the heat came down. With the roads, waterways, and airports out of commission, Hizb'allah can't go anywhere. Israel is trying to make them stand and fight. The damage to Lebanon's infrastructure is unfortuate, but the alternative was to let Hizb'allah's leaders fly, motor, or sail out of the county at a moments notice.

If Israel can eradicate Hizb'allah, they will be pulling that part of Lebanon out of the stone age.

Yes "if" but they cannot do it. Everybody knows that already. Several years of occupying Lebanon already proved that is not an achievable objective.

The fact is that Lebanon was gleeful that Syrian operatives and baathist dictators were run out of their country, but they were loathe to go so far as to expel Hezbollah because, well golly, they were only using Lebanon's back yard to direct their rage toward their southern neighbor. That would be like the US running terror groups targeting our government out of our country but allowing another non-state terror group to hang around near our southern border and lob shells at Mexico.

Funny how when an active duty soldier supports the war and Israel, he is not really qualified to make statements like that, but when Kerry, Murtha, Clark, Watada, and other left wing weasels speak out against the war they are celebrated for their "courage" and "truthfulness" by the left. This marine understands who and what the jihadists are and that the only thing they understand is strength.

Another reason many in Lebanon haven't taken up arms against hizbollah: unlike the Syraians who had to at least maintain the pretense that they were a lawful force, Hizbollah gleefully murders people for wearing a burka of the wrong cut or a beard trimmed in a trendy style.

Mac Lorry:

Talk about missing the "big picture". What Israel is doing is demonstrating to Lebanon, as well as all the nations of the world, is that a nation is fully responsible for the actions taken by organized groups that openly operate within it's boarders. A nation speaks with a single voice or it's not a nation. If Lebanon wants to live in peace then Lebanon must defeat Hizb'allah and expel it form it's territory. If they need help doing that, Israel would likely be happy to oblige.

It is my understanding that Isreal cut off the travel routes for three reasons:

Given that their first actions were based upon kidnapped soldiers, #3 would be the "public" reason for destroying all those routes of travel.

This isn't a world war...gimme a break. You are just killing defenseless civilians in the Lebanon.

Arabs only make up 10% of Islam, and even that 10% is divided. You are just fighting few guerillas and some terrorists with their hit and run tactics.

Wait till this becomes a full blow religeus war between Islam and US and Israel. THEN you will have the world war which you desire.

I promise you, Islam will bring the America Empire and its proxies in the west to it's eventual decline BEFORE the 2nd comming of the Son of Marry.

Write that down.

The most critical danger to the US power and west to a lesser extent is that they are still oblivious to Islamic civilization doctran.

This isn't like dealing with Japan or South Korea after WWII with polythiest, Budhists or Idol worshipers.

The US can never and will never successfuly influence the Middle East and Islamic world.

If you think they are still living in the 'Dark Ages' think again. It was only Christain Europe who lived in the Dark Ages and benefited from the knowledge Islam filtered into European cities, not Islamic civilization.

Too bad Americans or westerners will never understand this (and maybe arrogantly) and it will lead to their downfall.

When those "defenseless" "civilians" stop cooking plastic explosives on camp stoves and use them to blow up Tel Aviv restaurants, then you can use the term "defenseless" and "civilian" to describe the bulk of the people on Israel's borders.

Arabs only make up 10% of Islam

I'd like you to show your math on that one.

Wait till this becomes a full blow religeus war between Islam and US and Israel.

The US isn't a religion. For all practical purposes, the US is anti-religious.

The most critical danger to the US power and west to a lesser extent is that they are still oblivious to Islamic civilization doctran.

What's so difficult to understand? Muslim 'doctran' calls for the elimination or subjugation of everything that is non-muslim. Pardon the rest of the non-muslim world for resisting the kind offer of being killed or enslaved, but that's not our thing.

The US can never and will never successfuly influence the Middle East and Islamic world.

Tell that to the Imams who are exhorting the masses about the "cultural warfare" currently being waged against the "muslim nation". According to them, we're succeeding.

Fundamental lack of understanding of where such civilians are. Perhaps you need a geography lesson. Tell me how close Beirut is to Israel's border. Now tell me where most of the civilians have died.
Here we go again - we all know that Lebanon is virtually powerless to rid itself of Hezbollah, and that Israel is right to defend herself against the viscious attacks and rhetoric. However, it has recently been stated that the current strategy in Lebanon has been in the works for a while. This means that Israel KNEW that Hezbollah was acquiring missiles and stockpiling them, and did nothing. If they wanted to solve their problem, they'd attack Iran and Syria. Destroying the infrastructure and innocent civilians in Lebanon is only going to create more refugees, make the economic situation there worse, and make the populace that much more willing to accept aid from Iran and Syria. Of course, I learned from my discussion with you yesterday that any money WE or Israel spend attempting to foster postive relations will just be written off as imperialistic crusading. Bombing civilians is the only way. Hell, if that's the case - let's just pull the F**K out of Iraq and quit spending money helping THEM rebuild their infrastructure.

Arabs only make up 10% of Islam

"I'd like you to show your math on that one."

How about a link. Is 15% that significantly different from 10% as to make this a moot point? If so, don't bother responding.
Heck, the %2.4 percent of Muslims making up China's population is probably close to those who are Arab.
Muslim World Population

What's so difficult to understand? Muslim 'doctran' calls for the elimination or subjugation of everything that is non-muslim. Pardon the rest of the non-muslim world for resisting the kind offer of being killed or enslaved, but that's not our thing.

Aw shucks, now you've done it "old man". Do I have to start quoting Bible scripture now? What part of FUNDAMENTALIST do you not understand? If you think that a military solution is the most effective way to combat this dogma touted by and believed in by the MINORITY of the Muslim population, then you've resigned us all to perpetual warfare. Perpetual warfare is good for noone. Bombing them indiscrimiately and hurting civilians in the process (yeah, we all know that they hide amongst civilians) is only going to make the problem worse.
How big was the fundamentalist population in Iraq prior to our invasion? Let me know when you find out.

Tell that to the Imams who are exhorting the masses about the "cultural warfare" currently being waged against the "muslim nation". According to them, we're succeeding.

You sure love quoting the Imams and seem fixated on this particual line of thought. I'd like some links so that I may become more educated, and we can have a real discussion.

As I mentioned yesterday, the longer you keep using the term "liberal" the same way that the Nazis used the term "Jew", you have absolutely no credibility. Can we have a real discussion?

BTW - the statement: "As I mentioned yesterday, the longer you keep using the term "liberal" the same way that the Nazis used the term "Jew", you have absolutely no credibility."

was not meant to apply to anyone in particular. Just read it and see if you can figure out what it means.
