Arab World Turning Against Hezbollah

Only days ago Youssef Ibrahim wrote in his open letter to his Palestinian brothers that Arabs are asking Palestinians to stop the futile war against Israel and move on with their lives. Today we get news that the governments of the Arab League are turning their backs on Hezbollah and their radical jihadist compatriots:

BEIRUT, Lebanon - With the battle raging between Israel and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, Arab governments are taking the rare step of publicly blaming Hezbollah, underscoring their growing fear of the group's main sponsor, Iran.

Saudi Arabia, supported by Jordan, Egypt, several Persian Gulf states and the Palestinian Authority, chastised Hezbollah for "unexpected, inappropriate and irresponsible acts" at an emergency Arab League summit Saturday in Cairo.

"These acts will pull the whole region back to years ago, and we cannot simply accept them," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said of Hezbollah's attacks on Israel.

It is nearly unheard of for Arab officials to chastise an Arab group engaged in conflict with Israel, especially as images of destruction at the hands of Israeli warplanes are beamed into Arab living rooms. The willingness of those governments to defy public opinion in their countries underscores a shift that is prompted by the growing influence of Iran and Shiite Muslims in Iraq and across the region.

The way some officials see it, Arab analysts said, Israel is the devil they know, but Iran is the devil that could win.

[snip]

The willingness of the leading governments to openly defy Arab public opinion, which has raged against Israel's actions in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, underscores the readjustment of risks Arab governments believe they face.

"Who's benefiting?" asked a senior official of one of the Arab countries critical of Hezbollah, speaking anonymously because he is unauthorized to comment publicly. "Definitely not the Arabs or the peace process. But definitely the Iranians are."

Bill Kristol said on Fox News earlier this morning that Arabs are ticked off that Iran and Hezbollah are destroying any chance for peace and civility in the region and that they're pulling for Israel to crush Hezbollah.

This is an important development because in order for peace to succeed in the Middle East, the rest of the Arab world must stand up to these terrorists and demand that they stop hijacking the entire region and holding its population hostage for their purposes.

Good find, Kim!

Now, if only the 'cheese-eating surrender monkeys, Tony Blair (whom I suspect is doing so only for the benefit of his large Muslim constituency & doesn't otherwise want Israel to halt its activities) and the UN would shut up already and allow Israel to finish what she has started.

I wonder how the Democrats will torpedo the chance for peace? They will make every effort to support our enemies, and by extension those of Israel, to thwart peace.

They have to.

It's the only way they can regain power.

This exposes a 'fault' line in the ME that should be exploited.

The 'moderate' ME countries criticizing Hezbollah are NOT any less opposed to Israel or covertly, the US.

They are Arab and Iran is Persian. They don't like each other. But, they are all muslim.

They are only critical because the 'timing' doesn't suit them and because the Arabs do NOT want to see Iran become the uncontested 'Alpha Male' in Islam.

Great post, Kim. Let's hope that the Arab world does reject Hezbollah. They must to avoid subjugation to this radical wing of the religion which most practice in the region.

I wonder why the Western media uses the spelling 'Hezbollah'? See this note from Wikipedia:

1. ^ The name ‮حزب الله‬ is transliterated from the Arabic in a number of ways. An exact transliteration would be hizbu' llāh. Hezbollah is predominantly used by American media, such as CNN, Fox News and The New York Times, as well as by the BBC and The Times in the UK, but the organization itself alternatively transliterates its name as Hizbollah or Hizbullah. The leading English-language newspaper in the region, the Daily Star of Beirut, transliterates it as Hizbullah, as do the British newspapers The Guardian and The Economist. The Guardian's Sunday sister publication The Observer and British newspapers The Independent and The Daily Telegraph prefer Hizbollah, however, as does the American Christian Science Monitor. Both Hizbollah and Hezbollah are common transliterations into other languages with a Latin-based alphabet, such as French, Spanish, Italian and the Nordic languages. It may, however, also be written as Hizballah or Hisbollah, and the literal Arabic version Hizb Allah, which is used by Al Jazeera. [Emphasis added] "Hizb" (party) is the Modern Standard Arabic pronunciation, and "Hezb" is closer to Persian and to Lebanese dialect. The 'h' is pharyngeal in Arabic, but a normal 'h' sound in Persian. The "-llah" ending, originally "Allah", means "(the) God". The name is derived from a Qu'ranic aayat (verse) referring to those who belong to and follow the "Party of God".

Could it be that the media doesn't want the average reader to understand that these people are the same ones that are hijacking Islam to their own goals? Nah, couldn't be. 8-}

Arabs only emerged from foreign imperial conquest in the 1920s -- I believe 1923 is the recognized year of liberation from the 800-year reign of Turkish/Ottoman domination. I personally don't see them reacting politely to the backhanded attempt to re-insinuate another Persian Empire.

They'll play RealPolitik against the "common enemy", the hegemonic US and her 51st state, Israel, until it becomes crystalnacht clear that US hegemony is profit-making trivialities compared to the hegemony currently being puppet-stringed by Ahmadinejad.

The reason is because they ... (Below threshold)

The reason is because they are not waging jihad. They are waging hirabah and the people are becoming sick of it. You can not have an orderly society of any sort in any culture when it is ruled on the basis of murder, kidnapping, and extortion. Hezbollah is being seen for what it really is, a criminal gang who wants to hold onto power with guns rather than votes.

The Lebanese government can choose to be part of the solution or part of the problem. So far they have chosen to do nothing, which translates to tacit approval of the status quo, making them part of the problem.

If I could send a message to all those "diplomats" running around, it would be that there is not going to be any prisoner exchange now or ever in the future. Spending time on that aspect of any ceasefire agreement is a waste of time, effort, and energy that can best be spent addressing the real issues such as border security and taking long range weapons out of the hands of glorified street gangs.

A trial for treason, murder, and kidnapping might help too. Even in Sharia law, the penalty for hirabah is death.

Dont you know, that Israelis are bombing Lebanon, civilians, childrens, dont you think they have the right to LIVE.

And Hizbulla didnt start rocketing Israel, they gave warning, but when Israel doesnt stop, then they start rocketing?

What do you think , only Israel has the right to do anything. More than 200 civilian in Lebanon dies, and israel 22, ??? Dont you see the numbers who is killing. And still you plp are backing Israel.

This is not muslim/ jewish/ chirstian issue. See them as a human. I think you plp also joined Israel group as a criminal by raising your voice for Israel.

Are you supporting Israel on killing childrens?
Are you supporting Israel for bombing?

If yes!. Then shame on you.. you are against humanity.

Yes. And they also have the duty and obligation to stay inside their own borders and not kill Jews and kidnap their soldiers.

When that happens, you've committed an act of war.

Hizbulla didnt start rocketing Israel, they gave warning, but when Israel doesnt stop, then they start rocketing?

Hezbollah didn't start rocketing first, no. You're right. They just invaded Israel first.

More than 200 civilian in Lebanon dies, and israel 22, ???

What are you confused about? Israel plays war better. Anyone who's got brains can figure out that if someone else is better than you at playing war, don't play war with them. Right? Got brains? Can you add 2 and 2 and get a positive integer between 3 and 5?

Jordan and Egypt figured it out. Wutsa matter with the Palestinians? the Syrains? Don't they teach Avoiding Brick Walls in their schools?

This is not muslim/ jewish/ chirstian issue. See them as a human.

Then stop treating Jews and Christians as less-than-human.

Are you supporting Israel for bombing?

I'm even supporting Israel for invading and throwing every bomb-throwing jihadist under the tank treads.

Are you supporting Israel on killing childrens?

When Hamas and Hezbollah use their children as war-makers, yes. Palestinian children are not "innocent"; they are reflections of their parents. American children are fat and lazy and glued to the television. Palestinian children are lean and mean and cooking plastic explosives next to their old man.

So ... when Palestinians use their children to wage war, then I'm pulling for Israel to kill them.

Call me cruel if you want. I think it's far more cruel what Palestinian parents are doing to their own kids.

Because, you said it best: Palestinian parents are against humanity.

I just can't let this pass without comment.

1. Israel did not start this. They are responding to an attack from criminal scum from outside their borders. Like it or not they are justified in everything they have done.

2. In Lebanon's case it is very unfortunate they did not ask for help to get the terrorists out of the southern part of their country before this started. If they had this would never have happened. By doing nothing they sealed their fate of another Israeli incursion to defend themselves.

3. You must be a product of one of those open-minded institutions of higher learning where they teach you to kill the infidels. You must have missed the classes on reading, writing and history. The foundations for your arguments are poorly thought out and you are clearly ignorant of the actual history of the region. I suggest you get a grip on reality before you demonstrate to the world just how ignorant you really are.

How quick the terrorist lovers forget that the peace loving Hezbollah murdered hundreds of American soldiers in Beruit, that the scumbags make regular excursions into Israel to kill.

The Hezbollah are directly responsible for the 300+ civilian deaths in Lebanon. The blood of these people, including the blood of the innocent children are directly on their filthy hands.

Israel is surrounded by Islamic fundamentalist idiots that publicly vow to destroy the country and yet the peace loving terrorist supporters get their panties in a wad everytime Israel defends herself.

How can Islamic terrorists be trusted when they went on murderous vadalizing rampages over a few stupid cartoons.
