Juan Williams Follows In Cosby's Footsteps

Betsy Newmark's history class was addressed by Juan Williams recently and from the sound of his message and his new book, the same people who attacked Bill Cosby for telling black parents to take responsibility will likely have something to say about Williams soon.

Whew! Williams isn't pulling punches. And I expect he'll take a lot of hits from the black leaders who are exposed in his book. In fact, I hope that there is a lot of heat about this book so that more and more people hear about his message. For Williams is not only sounding the alarm, he is also prescribing what has to happen to change. And it's a simple message to young people. The path to a more successful life is clear: stay in school. Even if it's a crummy school, stay in and graduate. Get a job and keep it, no matter how low it seems to you. And wait until you're married to have children. In fact, wait until your twenties to have children. Work first and make sure you can afford a child. Stop blaming whites for your problems and practice some of that self-reliance that previous fighters for rights believed in.

That's good advice for any race of people, but especially for blacks who are poor. Sad that such common sense will be greeted with calls of UncleTom-ism or racism or whatever the latest -ism is; thanks to the NAACP and the Victim Industry.

Kudos to Williams for saying such things; one can hope that these types of statements are the beginning of a trend.

Good for Williams, I might even buy the book for some late summer reading.

EVERY child in the US is guaranteed 12 yrs of school. From that, there are a multitude of other choices for further schooling besides college, such as trade schools, tech schools, etc. What you do with that 12 yrs, and shortly thereafter goes a long way to determining your ultimate path in life.

Education and a great work ethic is the simplest and shortest path to succeess, and its high time the US starts to learn that.

A kid I coached several years ago hated school, but loves $$. He went to a Vo-Tech School while in HS, and then a trade school afterwards. At 21, he is making over $40k a year 'on the books', has his own apt, and just bought a new truck, all while all of his HS friends are schlepping around waiting for their 4th yr of college. He works OT every day possible, and works virtually every Sat AM doing side jobs for friends, family etc.

His goal was to make a grand a week before his friends all graduated college. He's well on his way, and now, rather than unconsciously looking down on him, his friends, and their parents, all look up at him, for what he has accomplished.

As he says, if he can do it,, anyone can!

He's right, of course.

The stats tell the story. Among married couples of any race, poverty is about 4%.

Among "single mothers", poverty rate is about 37%.

I work in the welfare bidness. I see it all the time. Kids raised in "single mother" households are 7-9 times more likely to end up in prison or on public assistance.

Welfare's about to get tougher, too. The new TANF rules will require states to push the unwilling into work whether they like it or not. A lot are not going to want to work, so they will end up with nothing.

I work in the welfare bidness and I see this all day. We are dealing with people who tell us they have a "right" to "their" money. We, of course, are usually "racists" for requiring them to actually do something for it.

It's about to get a whole lot tougher to be a deadbeat on Uncle Sam's dollar.

Hmmm.

I agree completely with "Scott in CA".

Kids need a father & mother. Not a "father figure", a father.

As a kid I was very much the slacker, when I could get away with it. But my father was old-style New Englander with that same work ethic. Between my father and mother, both hard workers, I learned how to be a hard worker rather than a slacker.

Much to my regret at times. :):)

Wow, I have new respect for Williams. I have to feel bad for him being on those panels on Fox, where I think he is deployed to take the "liberal" side of arguments. He usually looks very sad. But this is a great and brave decision on his part. Of course, the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons and rags like the Times will tear him a new one.

I have to agree w/Scott too... (Below threshold)

I have to agree w/Scott too. I used to work closely with the welfare bidness too...

My simple fix idea was/is this: Unless you can prove extreme hardship, if you didn't graduate High School then go somewhere and die. Education was the initial "welfare" offered by "the state." You didn't take advantage of that, so why should society be forced to shelter, feed, & cloth your worthless butt?

(At the same time, educational requirements for HS graduation would also be improved.)

If you *CAN* work and *WON'T*, I don't owe you a thing.

We've tried throwing money at the "poverty problem" for 30+ years, and not made a dent in it, because we've been subsidizing laziness.

High time for those who can work to do so. Don't want to? Tough. Life is full of things you don't want to do but have to. Get used to it.

Juan Williams may be paid by FOX to take the liberal side but his true 'racism' shows through on every discussion. He can't hide the fact he's one of the most racist people appearing as a regular on any news show, no not one of, the biggest racist in the news analysis business. He makes Je$$ie and $harpton look like pikers.

Les Nessman is right. It's good advice for any race. Earlier this spring we were at an outdoor event and witnessed a woman and her daughter walking by. Neither looked like they'd washed their hair or had any sense of modesty at all in their choice of dress. The mother was trash and her daughter was a mirror image, only younger, with facial piercings, unkempt hair and tatoos. Their feet were dirty in their flip flips and both looked like they were worse for wear after an all nighter. The daughter couldn't have been more than 14 and certainly wasn't old enough to be away from school on a weekday.

We just looked at each other and said, "That poor kid never stood a chance."

Hmmmm.

Yeah Juan and Bill Cosby are in for even more reaming. But it has to be said because I think a lot of people are getting a little tired of the "it's your fault, you white crackers." routine.

Speaking as a naturalised citizen I know that my family has never owned any slaves of any color. I also know that I absolutely refuse to accept any responsibility for the inability of some blacks to get an education, hold a job or get off their ass.

I believe a lot of legal immigrants are of the same opinion. It's just you native-born types that still buy into this nonsense.

Scott in CA, was that supposed to be funny? If it is, I think you are the only one laughing. And you work in the welfare business? No wonder this country is so [email protected]#%$d up!

Anyway, I co-sign with Juan Williams and most of what he says. Although I think the whole "it's our fault pull your own boot straps up" thing is getting kind of old. Cosby and a few other people said it, and it needed to be said. But now it just looks like everyone else is piling on and trying to sell books. Hey Juan, here is a thought, why don't you donate some of that FAUX NEWS money to some inner city programs in DC? Put your money where your mouth is[like the Cos]. Then, maybe more people-Not just white conservatives who don't need your advise because they already have their own house in order- will buy into what you are selling.

Last I heard, Williams was involved with Horton's Kids, which offers tutoring and mentoring to inner city DC kids, as well as the Childrens Defense Fund.

John:

Juan Williams proves that no matter if you are liberal or conservative in your starting point, a passion for truth and the commitment to using your brains can win out over knee jerk right and left wing ideologies. Juan is taking hits from his own liberal side for being willing to speak the truth about the state of the African American community and its failed leadership. I am a liberal at the core myself, but the ideology of the left on most issues has been consumed with to many misguided hopes and wishes that have no correlation to reality. White Racists stand out so obviously that they have no legitimacy in our society. However, the same can not be said for their parallel on the left. The far left anarchists that hate our society and all of its systems and traditions are just as dangerous. And Juan will find out like many of us who are core value liberals but are not cooks, that when you call the left on their stupidity, you will feel their irrational wrath. Like John Stossel, Juan will discover that the right is much more willing to discuss these complex issue with sanity than his fellow lefties.
