Check out Cynthia McKinney's latest:
Atlanta, GA (AHN) - Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) is suing an Atlanta newspaper for libel, after printing comments stemming from her run-in with police at the Capitol building.
J.M. Raffauf, her attorney, has filed charges against the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, editor Cynthia Tucker, and its publisher John Mellott following an article the paper ran on Sunday, July 30, 2006.According to Raffauf, Tucker's editorial column "was untrue, defamatory and libelous" when it read "'she (the Congresswoman) slugged him (the officer) with her cell phone.' This false allegation is not supported by any witness or any other evidence. Additionally, Tucker is maliciously attempting to spin this into a felony by falsely alleging that she assaulted the officer with a deadly weapon."
The suit alleges that other misstatements were made, including the statement that Congresswoman McKinney "suggested that President Bush had known in advance about the Sept. 11 attacks but did nothing to stop them so his friends could profit from the ensuing war," and "She doesn't have the power or prestige to pass a resolution in support of sweetened ice tea."So, What was E&P quoting from th
Now McKinney wants an "immediate retraction in writing these false and libelous statements" and "demands that your retraction and correction be accompanied by an editorial in which you specifically repudiate your libelous statements."
I have a feeling the Hank Johnson campaign is pretty happy right now. This lawsuit is going to make Cynthia McKinney look even crazier.
Update: E&P is now saying that there is no lawsuit. It turns out that E&P's original article contained quotes from a letter that McKinney's attorney sent to the AJC demanding a retraction.

She doesn't just shoot herself in the foot, she shoots herself in the gut.
Her people should take a poll; maybe a new hairstyle would do the trick.

I spent over 20 years in the newspaper business, mostly in management. I can say positively from multiple experiences at several newspapers that the single best way to guarantee a newspaper does NOT do something is to DEMAND they do it.
Now, folks with a strong libel case on a totally false story will get a more prominent and strongly worded correction than your average error. Politicians who misbehave get laughed at. Hard.
In these days of declining circulation and ad revenue, newspapers need any little thing to brighten their day. McKinney just gave the AJC a badly-needed guffaw.

The truth is an absolute defense for libel.

This is ironic considering that the AJC is a lib MSM newspaper and it and Tucker have generally supported McKinney and her ilk in the past. Think they're learning a lesson here? Naaaah...

She is the only living, breathing Animaniac.
I wouldn't be surprised to find baloney in her slacks.

I could see the paper offering McKinney an apology fairly soon.
McKinney is a darling of the far-Left/Koz Kids/Deaniacs/MoveOn faction, which controls the Dem party.
The Journal-Constitution has to decide whether to remain in the Party leadership's good graces, and 'attacking' McKinney (ie: Telling the Truth) will do the opposite.

Oops. Editor & Publisher (via Drudge) is now reporting that their previous report is false; McKinney has not filed suit. Don't know if that means she isn't going to, or if the papers just haven't been filed yet.

The quoted story is poorly worded: Lawyers don't file charges in a civil suit.
Other than that, the AJ-C must be thinking, bring it on (if the story is indeed true).
As a political ploy, though, it's not bad. McKinney fighting the Man is got to help get out the vote. Expect more as polling day gets nearer.
