CNN's Kyra Phillips had an unfortunate mic mishap today during President Bush's live remarks from New Orleans. Her mic was left on and when she went to the ladies' room, her bathroom conversation was heard overtop of the president's speech. Hot Air has the video and audio.
Here's the transcript from Newsbusters.
Kyra Phillips: "-assholes-Yeah, I'm very lucky in that regard with my husband. My husband is handsome and he is genuinely a loving, you know, no ego-[unintelligible] you know what I'm saying. Just a really passionate, compassionate great, great human being. And they exist. They do exist. They're hard to find. Yup. But they are out there."
[unidentified woman]: 'We'll see. He's going to come, you know, he's set for an extended visit-[unintelligible]"Phillips: "I mean, that's, that's how you figure it all out, those extended visits. [laughter]"
[unidentified woman]: "Yeah, but my mom, I think she really likes him."
Phillips: "Mom's got a good vibe? Good."
[unidentified woman]: "Yeah, my brother's the one that-[unintelligible]"
Phillips: "Brother-of course, brothers have to be, you know, protective. Except for mine. I've got to be protective of him."
[unidentified woman-unintelligible]
Phillips: "Yeah. He's married, three kids, but his wife is just a control freak."
[unidentified woman #2]: "Kyra."
Phillips: "Yeah, baby?"
[unidentified woman #2]: "Your mic is on. Turn it off. It's been on the air."
Catch her comments about her sister-in-law? Thanksgiving is going to be very awkward this year.

Hmm. Wireless mic. Couldn't the director just cut the channel from her mic?

The director could probably have cut her mic, but one can only assume that no one at CNN bothers to listen to Bush's speeches.
Anyways, that could have turned out a lot worse for Phillips. A lot worse.

Hey, at least she didn't say anything disparaging about the President. Or was she comparing her husband to the President?

Well, you know I can relate to her yapping about the S-I-L because I have one that is controlling too and I worry that my brother is going to die from a heart attack to keep her in her present style. So what, who cares I think CNN has a habit of doing this, remember the President? Perhaps they don't like her or maybe they think she's a dreaded conservative (I don't know, I don't watch CNN much). Well, I know that things probably aren't good at her brother's house tonight or hers for that matter. I guess Thanksgiving is probably out for this year. Besides, who amongst us does not have an in law that is ridiculous. My husband's whole family is nuts-dad married 5 times, mom married 4 times, two half siblings in and out of drug rehab and jail and one half sib who can't even get a GED. However, if this had happened at Fox, the libs would be going wild-how dare she talk about her s-i-l.

There is no such thing as FAUX news, at least not in the United States. There is a FOX news, and yeah, we would have tittered a little if she was there as well.

Embarassing sure, but as someone said, it could have been waaaaay worse. In fact it could hardly have been better. She says really nice things about her husband, gives the other lady some good advice (including listening to her Mom) and well, she says her sister in law is a control freak... I'm guessing that sister in law already knew that.

She did wash her hands. That's when most of the clip takes place. There are muffled clothing sounds at the beginning as she repositions her jacket and heads out of the stall. The running water is at the sink. The zipper is her purse/clutch. She was lucky she missed all the worst possible sounds! I feel embarassed for her, regardless of political bent, but it could have been much worse.

This mistake shouldn't have happened, makes me wonder if they wanted to hear something bad in the control room and when she didn't say something completely outlandish, they had someone tell her that her mic was still on.
