Love Those Aussies

Prime Minister John Howard doesn't have any problem telling Muslims still in a fury about the Pope's comments to get a hold of themselves and move on.

THE Islamic world's angry reaction to comments by Pope Benedict was disproportionate, strange and disappointing, the Prime Minister, John Howard, said last night.

"We should take a deep breath on these things and all have a sense of proportion. We seem to be living in a world where people have no sense of proportion," he told the ABC's Lateline program. "OK, they don't like what was said. I'm sure the Pope was not intending to attack Islam. He's expressed his regrets, and I think we should really move on."

An Aussie Cardinal also jumped into the fray:

SYDNEY (Reuters) - The head of Australia's Catholic church said the violent reaction to the Pontiff's comments on Islam in many parts of the Islamic world "justified one of Pope Benedict's main fears".

Cardinal George Pell, the conservative leader of Australia's 5.1 million Roman Catholics, said he was pleased there had been no violence in Australia in reaction to Pope Benedict's use of a mediaeval quotation on Islam and holy war.

But he criticised acts of violence elsewhere.

"The violent reaction in many parts of the Islamic world justified one of Pope Benedict's main fears," Pell, the Archbishop of Sydney, said in a statement on Web sites of the Catholic Church of Australia.

"They showed the link for many Islamists between religion and violence, their refusal to respond to criticism with rational arguments, but only with demonstrations, threats and actual violence," he said.

Some Australian Muslim leaders said the comments by both Pope Benedict and Pell should be condemned.

For what? Cardinal Pell simply acknowledged the obvious.

Michelle Malkin likes how Australia's government officials have handled the situation so much, she's thinking about moving there.

Far be it from to downplay the corruption in Washington, but it hardly supports your case to link to a story of fellow Republicans demanding Ney resign, Lee. If they had come out in support of the jackass, then you might have something, but they didn't, did they?

Btw, they have corruption in Australia, too, and that's a weak-ass segue to go off-topic with.

Australia has a population ... (Below threshold)
kathie:

Australia has a population of about 18 million on a Continent the size of the United States. It had an immigration policy until about 15 years ago of inviting relatives of those who had immigrated already to join their families. So the population is much more homogeneous. I think what Howard said is great--what I'm trying to say is that it is easier to make those kind of statements in Australia then a country with an enormous population that is very diverse, like the US.

As an Aussie who has live here in Australia all my life. Foreigners always think the grass is greener on the other hill. Well I am here to tell you the grass is not any greener over here.

Goddess - Your comment about talking 10 years to become an Australian Citizen, well it only takes two years. If you were person of special talents, eg Specialist of Military equipment it would take hours.

Lee - You are right there is corruption here the government has been implicated in its agency AWB giving kickbacks to Saddam Hussein in an oil for food scandal.

Kathie – I suggest your revised your population numbers it’s just over 20 million
The US has a population about 298 million so our number is very diminimus

I recommend you go to the CIA fact book.

Family reunions are allowed here if the balance of the members are here residing in Australia. That policy as I understand it has not been revoked.

Prime Minister Howard does suffer from xenophobia anyone who is not a WASP (white Anglo Saxon Protestant) does not rate in his book.( He still believes in 1950’s Australia and Robert Menzies is his hero, God, Queen and Country) If Michelle Malkin is wish to reside here in Australia, well you have a problem, because of your racial appearance. Unless you are married to a Rupert.
Look at the Cronulla riots, Prime Minister was very stunningly quite on this racial disturbance. This why the population is homogenous because we are all white.

Steve

Good lord, both of you are ever so tiresome.

Mantis apparently can barely type out his swill in English, much less put together a coherent argument, with random BS such as:

"Far be it from to downplay the corruption in Washington..."

What does that mean?

Not to mention Lee with her "staggeringly stoopid" attempt to be clever.

Quick rundown of the timeline:
http://timblair.net/ee/index.php/weblog/beach_trash_duke_it_out

What he doesn't mention here is the race involved were young male middle-eastern immigrants harrasing beach goers. It doesn't excuse the rioters--who many were young thugs themselves spoiling for a fight--however according to the reports, there were more than just whites there as well. (Though the majority were, I imagine, simply because of population proportions.)

As far as the PM being quiet...seems he was anything but:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/pm-refuses-to-use-racist-tag/2005/12/12/1134235985480.html

Australia has it's racial issues, and is not connected to one party or another...America had to deal with it's slave history and the Civil War, the Aussies, the Stolen Generation.

From what I've read of PMs remarks regarding this incident, he sounded perhaps more optimistic of the character of the Austraila people as a whole. IF anything, he sounds rather Pollyanna-ish.

But thanks for the clarification of some of the other points.

It's axiomatic that the Islamic extremists' response to the Pope would be to call for his death, and that confirms that this is merely the narrow edge of a burdgeoning movement, one that has the West, and, in particular, America, in its crosshairs.

Ahmadinejad's speech at the U.N. today corroborates all of this, which is truly a modern replay of 1938. This time we have historical precedent to guide us, so we don't have the excuse that was pandemic at the time, and that is that negotiations--read appeasement--would work with Herr Hitler.

As Steve above illustrates only too well, moonbats aren't the preserve of the US alone more's the pity. In fact I'd go as far to say that moonbatology is the US's biggest export. Thankfully in Australia fewer and fewer people listen to these sheeple and they're left as a rump to endlessly bleet, whine and whinge in far flung corners instead.
