Enough Already

The media frenzy over the Foley page IM scandal went way overboard, but what bothers me most about the thing is not the blatant attempt to do as much damage as possible to the GOP, but the fact that I can't have the television or radio news on when my kids are in the room anymore. For the past two weeks I have had flashbacks to the days of the infamous "semen stained dress." That is when I first learned to be quick with the "mute" button. What is most disturbing though is not the media coverage of political scandals with references to sex, but the sheer volume of news in which sexual molestation and assault are a part.

If it was confined to the news, to some other person in some other town, it might not even be so disturbing. Increasingly though, these stories hit too close to home. I have had several occasions to see these stories that make the news, or at least make it into court, affect someone I know personally.

The first time involved a teacher at the school I attended in fifth and sixth grade. The teacher was also the coach of the girls' basketball team. He seemed like a nice enough guy and was a popular teacher. He was my homeroom teacher, and also taught me history and P.E. I had no indication that anything was out of the ordinary. (Of course, I was only in fifth grade at the time.) I found out about ten years later that he had some real problems when I saw on the news that he had been arrested for hiding cameras in the girls' locker room and filming team members undressing.

My next brush with a creepy pervert was even more disturbing. I was out of college and had been working several years when I found out that a friend I had worked with a few years earlier was having troubles. We had been really close friends, but had not been in touch for a year or so since I had moved and had gotten married. A mutual friend told me she was having trouble -- he didn't want to tell me what was wrong, but just told me that I really needed to call her. When I contacted my friend she told me the story of her new husband (of a couple of years) who she discovered had hidden a camera in their bathroom vent and had been filming her sixteen-year-old daughter in the shower. He had a secret screening area set up under the house where he would view the tapes. I had met him a couple of times, but had never gotten any "creepy vibes."

Those two stories shook me up, because they involved people I knew. You would think that two creepy perverts would be enough for any one person to know personally, but unfortunately I wasn't so lucky.

The next time I found myself in the presence of a sex offender was even more surprising than the first two. I got a call at work one day from my husband telling me that the man across the street had been arrested. I honestly had to ask twice to make sure I understood him. The man across the street was a retired IBM guy whose wife always knew what was going on in the neighborhood. She frequently made pies and other dishes that she brought over, and she always checked in on me if she noticed my car home during a workday. He was a nice, but quiet, guy who we always trusted to feed our dog when we went out of town.

Well, it turns out that Mr. Retired IBM guy was exposing himself to little girls in the neighborhood. Thankfully one neighbor aimed a hidden camera at his backyard and caught him in the act. I later learned he had even asked one girl if she had seen what he was doing, so the behavior was escalating from indecent exposure to actual contact with the kids. Since I had a young daughter by the time he was caught, and he lived within sight of my house and had been in my home many times, this case made me feel vulnerable in a way the others had not. I went to court to watch the proceedings against him and had already decided that if he didn't receive punishment and move away that I would be taking action to convince him that he needed to move... to a nice retirement community away from any neighborhoods full of children. A great prosecutor in our county got an innocent plea changed to a guilty one in record time by wheeling in a t.v. cart with a VCR loaded with "the video" with the intent of showing it in open court. He spent some time in jail for his offense and then moved to Florida -- hopefully to an all adult community.

I saw another sex scandal involving kids on my local news last night and fortunately was able to mute the report before my kids heard it. A few minutes later when channel surfing I caught a bit of entertainment news about Sara Evans and her divorce involving a husband who she says liked to take pictures of his erect penis and post online. My kids are big Sara Evans fans so if they had been in the room I would have had a time trying to explain to them why they couldn't watch a report on her.

Enough already. I have had my fill. I am just curious -- does anyone else have a handful of similar stories involving people they know personally or have I crossed paths with a higher than average number of perverts? I am seriously starting to wonder.

I suppose I only have two: my favorite teacher in junior high was arrested when I was in college for selling weed to students (not sex-related, but he was 300+ pounds and had a glass eye, so he was creepy), and my brother-in-law decided it was a good idea to have sex with a homeless 14-year-old he was babysitting (he was 29).

Perverts are everywhere. I heard today that there was no morals taught in any school and ethics was a word in a foreign language no one understands.

The removal of God from the classrooms and now from public to satisfy a few atheist that should have been shot to begin with will eventually destroy the country.

You and everyone else know it's true that the democratic party as a whole has sunk into the sewer in a quest for power. Everything I hear from or about the party is that anything goes, and they support every sexual deviate life style there is. Look at the riots breaking out in high school and college, all a result of being taught the liberal life style of, anything goes as long as it feels good. The hell with everyone else. They can't all be that stupid, I don't think, so it is only a quest for power that drives them. I really believe they are so stupid that they think they can wave a wand and fix it if only they regain power. It won't happen. We'll just end up with another immoral democ'rat president that teaches the children that 'oral sex' is not sex. If you look back, most of these immoral acts came out of the nineties and accceptance of them were spread around the country to protect one man.

All of this because a few ego's were wounded by losing elections. Everyone knows it's true but half the people won't admit it due to the "learned' hate they are carrying around that is driving a lot of them crazy.

Today a 22 YO Man killed his entire family of 5 simply because he was never taught the word, no , and grew up liberal spoiled brat. Do what you want and if anyone tells you no, kill them. Great life to look forward to for your children isn't it.

I only wish the hot french teacher in high school or the even hotter history teacher in 8th grade gave it up like the new breed of women teachers do. But really, I think some of you really overplay the whole moral crisis thing..just because television covers these kinds of stories more often doesnt mean these things are happening more often.

Hey Scraprion, if that young man who killed his 5 family members had been a christion and his 5 relatives all athiests, then it would have been okay with you..right?.

Sarah, chill out and stop watching the news on TV. anyone who relies on tv as the primary source of news and info is a tool.

and yes the Office is the only network show i watch as well..I think Jim would be better off with the chick in his new office than with Pam, the new one is hotter

I'm sure everyone, unless they were raised in a cabin on a mountaintop somewhere, has come into contact with perverted/predatory behavior, either directly or indirectly. A guy in the community where I work was discovered to have been molesting 3 of his adopted foster daughters for years, unbeknownst to anyone. No one ever suspected. He seemed like a nice guy, etc. Is this kind of thing escalating or are we just hearing more about it? Who knows. We've developed a taste for the shocking and salacious in our broadcast news appetite; a constant "car-wreck" mentality, where we just can't seem to look away and can't wait for the next one. The more shocking the story, the more people will watch.

History is full of sexually perverted behavior. There exist today many places in the world where adult-child sex is not only tolerated but marketed, and I'm pretty sure none of them are in any way involved with the Democratic Party (sorry scrappy!). Unimaginable pleasure awaits if you can afford a trip to the Dominican Republic and a bottle of Viagra!

The thing that hacks me off is that this stuff is immediately politicized. In the Foley case the issue is not his behavior, but that it's become pretty clear that it was privately known and tolerated for the sake of political gain. That's politics, it's true, but it's certainly a black eye for those in charge, and they should have to answer for it.

The semen stained dress and its short time in the national spotlight was as much driven by our insatiable, voyeuristic thirst for having the curtain lifted, exposing all the dirty little secrets of the famous and powerful as it was by any kind of moral outrage. A president having extramarital sex? Shouldn't be very big news to anyone with even a passing knowledge of history, hardly a perversion by today's standards, but it's what the public wants, so what the hell. I don't think any of us would like to see his or her sexual behavior, be it marital or otherwise, as a daily part of the evening news.

Scrapiron immediately perverts the issue into an anti-democratic rant and doesn't get it that this kind of behavior transcends political, religious and social boundries. Priests, congresspeople, teachers, neighbors, family; I'm sure most of these folks were taught the meaning of "no" and certainly not all of them were raised a "liberal spoiled brat". How do you explain that? And another clue...shooting people is not the answer.

The bottom line is I think there is more of this behavoir going on, for a lot of reasons. How to stop it? Who knows at this point.

What is hacking me off in t... (Below threshold)

What is hacking me off in this media frenzy is not so much the political and moral posturing, but the perspective of what Foley actually did, as far as has come to light. Everyone .. the left, the right, the media ... is referring to Foley as if he is evil incarnate and what he did is the be-all, end-all, over the top most evil thing anyone could ever do. To a child! Pedophile! Pervert!

Yes, what he did was wrong, absolutley wrong. And he should not be representing the citizenry of this country. However, making it over-the-top epitome of evil serves to cheapen and downplay actual molestation of actual children. Just because their molester wasn't famous or a politician, it doesn't matter as much, even though what happened to them was much worse.

My daughter, at age 11, was the victim of a teacher that puts hands on her inappropriately, and also behaved in sleazy ways withe her - eyeing her well-developed chest and standing too closely. That was five years ago. She reported it, and was treated like a liar. He got a month long paid vacation. Now, five years later, he's back on the hot-seat because he's been having a sexual affair with an underage girl.

My daughter's reaction: "If they had actually DONE someting about him back then, he wouldn't have been able to do that to ____!!" (She knows the girl) And that was pre-Foley.

After the Foley scandal broke, and it was all over the place, she said, "Why such a big deal? He didn't touch anyone! He did wrong and didn't try to deny it! He quit his job and they're investigating and everything! Mr [Teacher] got a paid vacation and they called me a liar! It's not fair!"

LissaKay's daughter is a smart girl.

When I was in fifth or sixth grade a classmate told me that her father had sex with her. She told her mom, and mom laid down the law. I don't know if the threat of exposing him, calling the cops, made him behave or not. My classmate never talked to me about it again. Eventually her parents were divorced but not soon, I think.

Years and years later when I was home visiting, my mom mentioned that so-and-so was getting married to my classmate's father and so-and-so's ex-husband was going to court for custody on the charge that his ex's new husband had a sexual abuse history. My mom thought it was a case of "divorce lies" until I told her that the daughter had told me in 6th grade and did she think they might like someone to go to court to say so.

I'd never told anyone.

Our little town also had a very famous "missing child" case that turned out that the father had killed his daughter and dumped her in a cow pasture when she threatened to expose his sexual abuse.

And my high school typing teacher married one of his students. What? She had to have been all of 4 years younger than him! (Okay, so that one doesn't count, and I have no idea how they behaved before she graduated because that was before my time.)
