They Only Win If We Let Them

When things get rough there are those who whine and moan and assume the fetal position on the bathroom floor, and there are those who roll up their sleeves, get busy and fight until ten minutes after the clock runs out. Which camp are you going to find yourself in from now until Election Day? I can assure you I will be in the latter camp.

I have been optimistic about the election in spite of all the doom and gloom I have heard over the past year. Until the Foley scandal broke, Republicans, led by the President who thankfully is a Reagan optimist, had closed the gap and had the momentum on their side. Foley stopped the momentum and completely drowned out the message and it showed in the polls. I let myself indulge in a few days of being down about it, then I sucked it up and decided to get busy. Along with my fellow Rightroots bloggers, I appealed to readers to contribute to help fund final ad expenditures. Blog readers came through and Rightroots was a big success.

Now is not the time to rest though. It is crunch time and anyone who does not do their part does not deserve to bitch and moan if we lose the House or Senate. Over the next few weeks I will be offering ways that those who want to make a difference can. Because Rightroots is a PAC, some time was required to process contributions to get them to the candidates. Several campaigns have let us know that any contributions given to them directly through their website's contribution page will be received in time to make a difference. If you have a favorite candidate, consider making one last contribution. I will be posting links to some of those candidates' contribution pages in the upcoming days.

If you are like me and don't have any spare cash right now, there are still many ways you can make a difference. If you have some time you can contribute, call your local party headquarters or the campaign office of your favorite candidate and ask how you can help. In 2004, I did quite a bit of GOTV phone calls in the weeks leading up to the election and worked the polls on election day, and I plan to do the same this year.

Other less formal ways that you can help include talking to your friends, neighbors and family about the election and why it is important that they show up to vote. If you know anyone that needs a ride to the polls and you are able to offer one, do it. These are only a few ways you can make a difference.

Don't buy the spin. Not all on the left are buying it, in spite of the fact they are pushing it. There are too many funny numbers and too much questionable analysis floating around right now. There are many in the media working hard to depress Republican turnout. It happened in 2002, and in 2004, and probably in most every other election to some extent. Read Alexander McClure on the "politics of defeat," as well as this post from 2004 which is a "how to" for the hours leading up to election day. Read Hugh Hewitt to get some of the good news you will not easily find in the mainstream media. There are some valid reasons for concern, but they should only serve to reinforce our commitment to work that much harder. The other side only wins if we let them.

[Note: A "smart guy" found an error in this post after it had only been up a few minutes. I corrected it immediately -- details are in the comments section. Thanks Smart Guy!]

Update: Newt Gingrich has a "must read" post along these lines.

Republicans should enter these closing weeks of the election with clarity, conviction and confidence. The GOP owes it to the American people to give them an inspiring choice. When you are right, you have confidence.
...
Republicans can turn this around, but they must make the case.

That is what campaigns are for.

In an election, three weeks Is a long time

I learned this lesson in 1978 in my third campaign for Congress. In mid-September, my Democrat opponent was ahead 51 to 37. Like most liberals, in the district she pretended she was a conservative, but two key votes in Congress gave her away. One on welfare reform and the other on taxes, in each case she voted her values as a liberal.

We believed we could win the campaign based on one big truth -- she was a liberal -- versus one big lie -- her pretending she was a conservative.

Every element of our campaign kept coming back to this simple theme: "She knows her record, she hopes you don't." This was our consistent way of saying: "She knows she is a liberal, and she is afraid to tell the truth about it, because she knows you will vote against her if you learn the truth."

We won 54 to 46. That meant that in five weeks of campaigning we had moved from a 14-point deficit to an eight-point majority. I gained 17 percentage points and my liberal opponent, once exposed, lost 5 percentage points.

Newt has a fairly detailed strategy for the final three weeks that sounds like a winner to me. I cannot overstate how brilliant this column is. Read it all.

Update II: Here is one of those candidates that can use your help now -- Bob Corker in Tennessee. Click here to contribute and here to volunteer.

(Editor's update: 7:55 a.m. 10/17/06: Link added to complete Gingrich column)

Lorie,
I just don't think it serves any purpose to concede the election before its even taken place. In a few of his posts I have read lately he is all but certain that the GOP will lose this fall.

I think a key to this is that even if you think you will lose, don't let on that you think that.

I went in for a job interview recently and answered a question badly. If i let that affect the rest of the interview and i took on a "I won't get hired" attitude, i will be undermining myself by telling myself i wont get hired.

If i stay optimistic and shake off those bad answers and move on, then I look unaffected by the bad things. As a person I look like I can recover and am ready to be hired. Much as republicans should shake these things off and not let the media run with them. Move on as if they aren't happening and be confident and be strong.

Obviously Mr. Hawkins hasn't heard of being vigilant, and just wants to cave... I love reading his site, but every once in awhile it seems like he is in a race tell everyone how his political party will lose. I don't think the conservative movement needs cry babies, but we need people ready to stand up and not fall into this trap set up by the media that is meant to make people think along the same lines as Mr. Hawkins. He should be smart enough to see through the garbage polling and the media reports...

Bigger debt? liberals like to spend more than conservatives.

More Quagmires? Iraq has progressed beyond anyones wildest dreams and quagmire was either pulled from family guy or vietnam... i'm not sure what your point is...

More corporate welfare? hmm... ok, thats kind of an oxymoron since corporations pay mroe taxes than anyone else...

More corruption? Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Bill Clinton anyone? Culture of corruption blew up in the dems face like a whore at a gang bang.

Christian right one night stands? not sure what you're talking about, at least clinton had multiple nights with some of his ladies even though he raped one or more of them.

Incompetence? like "redeploying our troops in Iraq to Okinawa"? that kind of incompetence? Oh wait! that was a democrat that suggested that!

More lies? Like Clinton saying he did not have sex with that woman ms. lewinski?

More selling out of the middle class? like getting rid of tax cuts? Don't think that getting rid of tax cuts ONLY affects the rich because you are retarted if you do think that

More power for the lobbyists? Like ACLU lobbiests and Jack Abromoff with Harry Reid type lobbiests?? I think you should elaborate. Republicans aren't the only ones tied to lobbiests, and if an investigation happened, a lot of democrat names would come up.

Influence peddling? See the previous point.

Party Before country? What party wants the US to lose the war on terror and lose the war in Iraq. What party would have the most to gain from the US losing? Obviously thr democrats.

Lorie,

Thank you so much for this post. This is exactly the kind of stuff that needs to be said repeatedly. It seems that the media jihad against Republicans as I like to call it, is totally directed at getting our side to just give up, concede defeat and let the Democrats have the House and Senate without putting up a fight. This is insane! Yet, that is what they have worked 24-7 to try and sell us on, with their daily pronouncement that its all over, its a foregone conclusion, and you'd better accept it.
Unfortunately, it has worked to some extent with some on our side who for whatever reason have grown wobbly spines.

I look around and I see a strong economy, a stock market in record territory, low unemployment, falling gas prices and a shrinking deficit. The nation is at war, but the policies of the administration and its congressional supporters have kept us from getting attacked again for over 5 years. Yet we are to believe that the folks who brought about these conditions are about to be tossed out in favor of folks who have offered no agenda, except their hatred for President Bush. And what little we have been able to determine suggests that they would undue many of the policies that created these conditions. And the one piece of evidence that suggests this is polling data that drives news coverage by a hostile media, who wants our side to fail because they are in bed with the other side.

I just contributed to a number of candidates, and will even send a donation in to the RNC to help Ken Mehlman. Its obvious from what he, Rove and Bush have been saying that sent the media into a frenzy that they haven't given up, and neither should we.

muirgeo is a bit disingenuous about bj's budget surplus. if your raise taxes (mine)cut defense spending (the core function of the federal government)get a lucky convergence of an opposition congress to curb other spending and catch the wave of a stock market boon ( massive capital gains tax revenues) you too could run a budget surplus. in other words winning a lottery means your lucky, not a financial wizard.

if bj had a democrat congress, taxes would have raised, defense would have been even more severely cut, hillarycare enacted and even more spending on every manner of welfare imaginable. there never would have been a surplus under his administration. he is one super lucky dude, having the right enemies to curb his excesses, running when his dim opponents thought they had no chance to win and catching the wave of an upturning economy. I give him credit for seeing the opportunity his dim opponents like cuomo missed.

as to why libs care about deficits is beyond me. it's not as if they are actually worried that they are going to pay for them. 75% of the income taxes are paid by 25% of the taxpayers. paying for government is not a problem for 3/4 of the tax consumers. as for the payers it makes no difference, they are going to pay no matter what. for them it's only a question of how much of their taxes are allocated to debt service or someonelses welfare. a distinction without much of a difference.

Not sure of his (Mongo's) numbers but have the official site to check. As a fact I posted the web address for the site on here a few days ago. Maybe muirgeo actually checked it. Considering the cost of recovery from the 9-11 attack, the war on terrom, and having to totally rebuild/rearm the military (destroyed in the 90's), the deficit numbers of President Bush are more than reasonable. If the democrats don't get in and eleminate the tax cuts the economy will continue to roar along and the deficit will be further reduced.
Peloshi's promise to reverse all of the gains is really scary. Eleminate tax cuts for the working class, crash the stock market (over 60% of americans now have investments), Increase unemployment rates, Cut and run from Iraq and allow the terrorists to kill millions of people. What a plan, but it's the only one the democ'rats have.

Don't worry about Limbaugh's tax munbers, they are also from the official numbers maintained by the IRS. Old Rush isn't foolish enough to post inaccurate numbers. He's definetly not a lying democrat.

Another Mongo snow job. If you care to go back a few years you will find that a 'democrat' opened the SS lockbox and it has not been locked since. It has been spent as part of the normal budget for years. Doesn't anyone remember 'President Bush' showing the filing cabinets full of IOU's and telling the American people that there is and has not been any 'SS' funds for years. The SS of today is being paid 100% out of the funds collected today. The baby boomers will take care of that, unless you are willing to pay some huge SS tax in the future, like two of you pay enough to provide full benefits for one person. That will exceed $500 per month each in SS tax alone, you ready? He was trying to get the truth out to the American people. The SS shell game is about over and it will soon go broke. Who refused to even talk about fixing it? Democrats. I suspect the SS system will go flop in less that 10 years.
