President Bush struck back at John Kerry after he made his unbelievably crass remarks about our military men and women in Iraq:
In the mist of a heated campaign season, there are somethings we should all be able to agree on, and one of the most important is that every one of our troops deserves our respect and our gratitude.
Yesterday, my opponent in 2004 presidential race, Senator Kerry, was speaking to a group of young people in California. I want you to listen to what he said. He said, "You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."The senator's suggestion that the men and women of our military are somehow uneducated is insulting and it is shameful. The members of the United States military are plenty smart and they are plenty brave and the senator from Massachusetts owes them an apology.
Ouch. That is going to bruise.
Update: Jay at Stop the ACLU has the video of President Bush demanding that John Kerry apologize to our troops.
President Bush's comments on Kerry don't start until almost the end of the video. Put the player's curser at the 2:45 mark to get right to the president's remarks, but be aware that the counter goes backwards.

What pleases me are times like this when the heat of a hotly contested campaign is over and the candidate can let his hair down a little and speak from the heart and not be preoccupied about the kind of image he has to project to get every last vote he can. It is incredible that M-ass-achusetts can keep electing the pair of clods it does for the US Senate.

Perhaps if the GOP wants to win they could exert an equal amount of energy to something that isn't quite possibly misleading and to something that actually matters. For instance, trying to call Democratic candidates on their immigration stances or explaining to voters why those stances are wrong.

I don't buy that - he stuck his foot in his mouth with some ill-prepared remarks - let him chew.
This issue is however, way overblown (not surprising for this close to the election - but way overblown). What Kerry was trying to say was that if you don't do well in school your options are limited - the armed services being one - a well-known option for those who don't choose to pursue college or a career directly out of high school.
My opinion is that Kerry is an idiot, and should be sent packing from the Democratic Party. I can't believe some of the stupid things that guys says, and he has a great deal of difficulty getting his point across. In this 10 second sound bite world - he'll never survive another campaign.

Conservative hosts are always talking about having twords being taken out of context (maybe with good reason I see now). Everyone would be helped by knowing the full context especially the preface to Kerry's controversial remarks and best I can figure out Kerry's subject was Bush and not the individual troops. From The New York Times. "Kerry opened with several one-liners, joking at one point that President Bush had lived in Texas but now "lives in a state of denial." Then, Kerry said (to his college audience)
"You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don't - you get stuck in Iraq." Kerry, a Yale graduate voluntereed to serve in Vietnam, (unlike everyone else in the Administration) so if anything the joke would be him, which seem pretty unlikely. He might joke about Bush, but one thing Kerry never jokes about is his war experience.

You would rather take an elitist, sanctimonious stance and blame an 'ignorant' public on your past losses. You could not accept that people were just not turned on by the two starch-shirted rubes you nominated in the past. Bush may be a daddy's boy but father's help their sons all the time. Who's the lying shameless asses NOW????'
Uh, that would be John Kerry, sir.
For he studied, and learned and thought and pondered, and made the most out of his education and analyzed the pre-war situation as well as his deep, variegated, sees-all-shades-of-gray mind would allow...and made speeches attacking Saddam Hussein over WMD, and ended up voting for the use of force resolution (that's voting for the toppling of the Hussein regime, regardless of his well-after spin that he was voting that way just to give the President a "strong hand to complete the inspections".)
So Mr. Kerry was joshing with the students to be more like him...and vote for the Iraq War?
And by the way, the only one who sounds like a nutjob here is...you.

I really love the chickenhawk argument, I really do. It's a quick and sure way to observe that one's opponent is either an idiot or a borderline fascist.
The part I like best is where the arguer doesn't bother think the implications through. Like the idea that non-veterans have no moral authority to hold ideas about war. On the contrary, we're all citizens here (I'm assuming that, of course), with equal moral authority to hold an opinion.
Even if it's a stupid opinion.
That's just one of the many beauties of the Constitution. Last time I checked, current or prior military service isn't a prerequisite for ANY rights or ANY office stated in the Constitution.
If it's too hard to find a link to the text of the Constitution, I'm sure that someone here can help you out. :)

False alarm. Here are the facts. The president who enacted the ban on photos from Dover AFB was former President George Bush because during the 1991 Persian Gulf War he got mad when the MEDIA used a split screen to air the coffin ceremonies alongside his news briefing with reporters, in which he was seen to laugh at one point.
Since then the press blackout has been enforced intermittently and used selectively for political reasons by former President Bill Clinton as well as President George W. Bush .

Indeed it did, depriving the deceased heroes and their families of a grateful nation expressing its condolences. On 22 Apr 04 the USAF released the photos from Dover AFB under the Freedom of Information Act. In Apr 05 the Pentagon released more:

And what exactly did Kerry say that was so reprehensible? The truth? That most people would rather go to college than go and fight in a political war? Or be put in a position where they have to join the army to try and pay their college tuition?
Give me a break! You people are such hypocrites its laughable. And shame on Kerry for backing away from his statements. What he should have said was: Yes that's exactly what I meant, and until I see the likes of Toney Snow's kids, and the Bush twins signing up to go and fight, I will stand by those words.
Yeah, like some kid with a Wharton MBA is going to sign up for Iraq. And please, don't give me the examples of all the Phi Beta Kappa'a you know that are over there fighting. The vast majority of those kids who signed up were already in the reserves, or in the Army full time. The people who signed up after 911 out of a sense of patriotism to go and kick OBL's butt have become dissilusioned-insert Pat Tillman's brother here-
Until all the young people in this country have the same options, i.e. mommy and daddy can pay for Johnny's college tuition. I don't want to hear squat about the best and the brightest serving.

"An all-time high 85 percent of U.S. adults age 25 and over had completed at least high school in 2003, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Also in 2003, 27 percent of adults age 25 and over had a college degree, another record."
Gee 85% of US Adults have high school diplomas.
In the military 99.9% of all military members have high school diplomas. So from jump street the military is 15% ahead of civilians up to the age of 25.
Education is one of the primary things looked at for promotion.
By the time a military recruit hits their first duty station they have recieved anywhere from 8-52 weeks of schooling/training in their MOS.
In short. You dont know what the F*CK you are talking about.

Does anyone still believe that Kerry was talking about the troops and not what is logical, about Bush's policy which has us stuck in Iraq?
The internal logic shows Kerry was talking about Bush.
I think people can see (IF THEY THINK ABOUT IT) that if someone was talking about being dumb and then sent to Iraq but what would eduction have to do with the differance betwen stuck and unstuck if it was not a policy you had control over?
Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) was INCREADIBLY honest when he admitted what was going on: On the October 31 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, Armey said of the attacks on Kerry's remarks, "Well, it's pretty standard fare in political discourse. You misconstrue what somebody said. You isolate a statement, you lend your interpretation to it and then feign moral outrage." When host Chris Matthews stated that Kerry "was trashing Bush," Armey responded, "Right," and went on to say, "A fundamental premise of politics is we can make this work if people just never figure it out."
Problem is, some of you, when you are fooled by the Republican lies, you won't admit it because of pride. Look at what Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) said above and think it over a while, I think it could open your eyes to what is really going on in this country.
