President Bush struck back at John Kerry after he made his unbelievably crass remarks about our military men and women in Iraq:
In the mist of a heated campaign season, there are somethings we should all be able to agree on, and one of the most important is that every one of our troops deserves our respect and our gratitude.
Yesterday, my opponent in 2004 presidential race, Senator Kerry, was speaking to a group of young people in California. I want you to listen to what he said. He said, "You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."The senator's suggestion that the men and women of our military are somehow uneducated is insulting and it is shameful. The members of the United States military are plenty smart and they are plenty brave and the senator from Massachusetts owes them an apology.
Ouch. That is going to bruise.
Update: Jay at Stop the ACLU has the video of President Bush demanding that John Kerry apologize to our troops.
President Bush's comments on Kerry don't start until almost the end of the video. Put the player's curser at the 2:45 mark to get right to the president's remarks, but be aware that the counter goes backwards.

What pleases me are times like this when the heat of a hotly contested campaign is over and the candidate can let his hair down a little and speak from the heart and not be preoccupied about the kind of image he has to project to get every last vote he can. It is incredible that M-ass-achusetts can keep electing the pair of clods it does for the US Senate.

Perhaps if the GOP wants to win they could exert an equal amount of energy to something that isn't quite possibly misleading and to something that actually matters. For instance, trying to call Democratic candidates on their immigration stances or explaining to voters why those stances are wrong.

I don't buy that - he stuck his foot in his mouth with some ill-prepared remarks - let him chew.
This issue is however, way overblown (not surprising for this close to the election - but way overblown). What Kerry was trying to say was that if you don't do well in school your options are limited - the armed services being one - a well-known option for those who don't choose to pursue college or a career directly out of high school.
My opinion is that Kerry is an idiot, and should be sent packing from the Democratic Party. I can't believe some of the stupid things that guys says, and he has a great deal of difficulty getting his point across. In this 10 second sound bite world - he'll never survive another campaign.

Conservative hosts are always talking about having twords being taken out of context (maybe with good reason I see now). Everyone would be helped by knowing the full context especially the preface to Kerry's controversial remarks and best I can figure out Kerry's subject was Bush and not the individual troops. From The New York Times. "Kerry opened with several one-liners, joking at one point that President Bush had lived in Texas but now "lives in a state of denial." Then, Kerry said (to his college audience)
"You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don't - you get stuck in Iraq." Kerry, a Yale graduate voluntereed to serve in Vietnam, (unlike everyone else in the Administration) so if anything the joke would be him, which seem pretty unlikely. He might joke about Bush, but one thing Kerry never jokes about is his war experience.

You folks who dislike Bush can complain all you want about him. But Kerry is nothing but a clown and provides absolutely no shining contrast to Bush. You people need to get real serious when it comes to nominating opposing presidential candidates. You would rather take an elitist, sanctimonious stance and blame an 'ignorant' public on your past losses. You could not accept that people were just not turned on by the two starch-shirted rubes you nominated in the past. Bush may be a daddy's boy but father's help their sons all the time. At least Bush doesn't have to go sniffing for trust fund support outside his family. Kerry is an idiot, you guys should lose him and move on. As a conservative I know you guys can do better.
