President Bush's News Conference

Drudge is reporting that President Bush will make a major announcement in his news conference today. I'm guessing the buzz will be that he will announce Secretary Rumsfeld's resignation.

In a press conference earlier this morning, Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi (yuck) said that if President Bush really wants to show that he's interested in working with the Democrats on a new path for Iraq, he needs to get rid of the civilian leadership at the Pentagon. That means Rumsfeld. The Dems have been gunning for him for years. Let's see if they get their way today.

Update: Fox News confirms that Secretary Rumsfeld is resigning.

Update II: Ex-CIA chief Robert Gates will be Secretary of Defense.

Update III: President Bush on Rove:

"I Obviously Was Working Harder on the Campaign Than He Was"

Update IV: Dr. Robert Michael Gates:

gates.jpg

He's currently the president of Texas A&M University. He was director of the CIA under former President George HW Bush from 1991-1993. Prior to that he spent 26 years in the CIA and the National Security Council.

There will not be another election until President Bush retires, and Rumsfeld goes with him anyway.

Lee,

I'm confused. Why aren't you happy about this? I know I am. Fresh eyes and a presepctive are needed.

Owners of sports teams always say they back so-and-so before giving them the ax. When a president of any sports organization says "he(the coach) has our complete confidence; we don't plan on making any changes" that's code for "we're giving him time to get his resume together and get feelers out there." That doesn't make them liars, it just means they don't want to embarass the coach or undermine the confidence of the players. Everybody "knows" what it means.

I absolutely believe this model holds true politics. It doesn't make owners of organizations or Presidents liars. It's just business (or politcis).

I look at it as Bush giving his first peace offering to the Dems. Be happy about it. Then again, be careful of what you wish for. Because as Forrest Gump says "you never know what you're gonna get...". ;-)

Contrary to most here, on both sides, I beleive this is an astute political move. I mentioned in another thread, that one of my biggest fears is that the government will stall and become paralyzed by this division. Pelosi said that a condition of open discussion with her and Bush would need to begin with Rumsfeld's resignation.

Bush realizes that nothing can get done if the government is divided. Rumsfeld was sacrificed on the altar of this idea. I don't beleive it's fair, but I think it's a step towards a unified government...that is of course this isn't just the first of many demands made by Madam Speaker Pelosi. We'll see how much this helps.

As far as Bush's "lies", Lee. Bush made a prediction, which was wrong. How is making an erroneous prediction equal to lying?
As far as Rumsfeld, I still think Bush is behind him 100%, but in order to open dialogue, Rumsfeld had to be dismissed.
Had Republicans kept the majority, as Bush predicted, Rumsfeld would have stayed.

I think, perhaps, you should handle victory as gracefully as this administration has handled defeat. It will look pretty bad if certain decisions executed by Democrats turn foul after you spent a good amount of time gloating.

There's a REASON elections are called "the only poll that counts." Every other poll is just practice, guesswork, hunches.

I am sorely tempted to go back over Lee's comments with a fine-tooth comb, find a prediction or promise he made, call HIM a liar, and ban him on those grounds.

Hell, I already have that -- six months ago he PROMISED me he'd e-mail the name of at least one suspected sock puppet, and that was LONG before the Glenn Greenwald kerfuffle. He never did, and has said he has no intention of doing so. I guess that makes him a LIAR and a FRAUD and I ought to impeach ban him, right?

Look - Bush knew the likely outcome of the House when he said the GOP would carry it - If he was cheerleading - great - but he made a statement that the GOP would carry the house, and he knew better.

I expect more from a President than one lie after another. Apparently Republicans don't. All Bush had to do is say "If we get out the vote we can hold the house and senate" -- but no, the leader of the United States of America stood up there and lied again.

Do you really think he believed that the outcome would be different, when everyone else knew otherwise, and he had access to inside data from the GOP? That's the alternative, and its equally ugly.

You've characterized Bush's statement of his belief that the GOP would carry the House as a lie. For this to be the case, Bush would have had to know for this to be false at the time he said it. You don't honestly believe that anyone knew the outcome of the election, as fact, prior to the election ?

As well as a higher standard than you hold yourself, Lee. We've cited YOUR history of "lies," by your own definition, and they're quite lengthy and extensive. But you just keep ignoring them and spinning new "lies."

For example, you said that Bush's impeachment is "off the table." Based on your standard of "lying," that means that you have a magic time machine, zipped ahead to January 20, 2009 or later, and saw indisputable PROOF that Bush will not be impeached.

And if he is, you're a lying sack of shit.

BTW, the "lying" is the new part. The rest is long established truth.

Lee, then I guess you have no standards at all! Last week you gained some measure of respect from the readers here by your statements regarding John Kerry.

Well, you've lost whatever respect you may have gained from anybody reading this BLOG. Any moron could tell that in order for Bush to govern - and regardless of anything you may believe, he is the President and his mandate is to govern - he would have to make certain sacrifices to the new powers that be - the Dems.

If he kept Rumsfeld, the SecDef would have spent the next two years wearing out a path between the Pentagon and the House for hearing after hearing, investigation after investigation. There would be no way he could manage DOD or the war. Bush has to have a SecDef that has DOD and the war front and center and there can be no other sidebars or distractions.

And much as you do not want to believe it - there is a war being fought and keeping someone in charge of DOD who would not be able to devote his entire energy to the task is foolish beyond measure.

So for once in your pitiful life, take a back step for a moment and at the very least allow that time may show this to be a good move on the President's part.
