Trent Lott Wins Senate Minority Whip Post

Just when you thought the Senate Republicans couldn't become any less exciting:

Sen. Trent Lott, ousted from the top Senate Republican leadership job four years ago because of remarks considered racially insensitive, won election to the No. 2 post Wednesday for the minority GOP in the next Congress.

Lott returned to the center of power by getting the position of vote- counting GOP whip, nosing out Sen. Lamar Alexander. Sen. Rick Santorum told reporters that Lott beat Alexander by a 25-24 vote.

After an intense evening in which both men lobbied colleagues during floor votes, the Republican caucus elected Lott, a one-time whip and majority leader, by secret ballot. Lott will be the GOP's second-in- command to Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who was elected unanimously to be the Senate minority leader in the new Congress.

With the midterm elections finished and Santorum, another candidate for the post, failing to win re-election, Lott cast himself as the more experienced candidate and the better choice for a job.

The Tennessee senator was not new to the art of counting votes among finicky colleagues, any one of whom can use Senate procedure to hold up business or kill legislation. A former Cabinet secretary and governor and now a deputy Republican whip, Alexander cast himself as a morale-booster for a demoralized Republican caucus.

How about shaking things up, guys? Geez.

I concur with Mary Katharine:

Welcome to "Survivor: The Isle of Crappy Republican Leadership."

This season: voting off everyone who could have a shot at turning the flailing party around! Next episode? Boehner and Blunt earn immunity! Season finale? George Bush and Karl Rove beat out DeLay, Boehner, Blunt, Lott, and Frist by forming a smart alliance with Martinez.

Get on the phones for Pence and Shadegg. We need them.

202-225-3121. Capitol switchboard, baby!

Dean Barnett:

Is it just me, or is it becoming increasingly apparent that the Republicans and Democrats are determined to engage in a two year dumb-off? If it weren't for the fact that there are some very determined lunatics out there trying to kill us, this would be funny.

But they are out there, so it isn't.

Don't wake jp2 up by telling him the truth. Support Mad Dog Murtha so we can have a few more laughs for the next two years. Even Hanoi John (a known traitor) gets a position that will allow him off of his knees once a week. Peeeloshi's a** must be getting wrinkled that from all of the kissing and slobbering. Someone photo shop him from the picture of his royal highness watching the annointed leader's walking down the hall. His face was much longer than usual.

Can the results of this election become any funnier. Yep, when Jack names the dim's he paid for favors. Bring it on Jack and the president will issue a complete pardon, but you have to name the right names. Reid and anyone from Ca will do. Two republican governors can replace them with republicans. Wouldn't that be a hoot. I'll bet Peeloshi's a** has ate a dozen pair of panties in the past two days. ROFL

He was. And he gets away with using the "N" word. But haven't I been reading here about how us good guys take out our trash whereas the Dems worship theirs?

IMHO, the choice of Lott will go a long ways to defuse the Dem's Murtha mess and their (likely) choice of the crook Alcee Hastings to head up a critically important committee. It's all the liars in the MSM needs for cover.

In politics it's never okay to have a checkered past. I certaintly would never have voted for Byrd, even though he seems to be genuinely apologetic about his previous membership.

He isn't proud of his past. Lott is. That's the difference.

You must have missed Byrd's recent use of the "N" word. "He isn't proud of his past." Could've fooled me.

The negatives of this is recycled leadership and an pro-pork in the lead. Upside, name me a better knife fighter in the senate. This tells me the senate republicans are serious about putting the kibosh on any democratic moves to the left. Let the games begin.

The contest was between Lott and Lamar Alexander. No one else was in the race.

I like Alexander a lot, although he isn't as conservative as I am - or Lott is, for that matter. He does fit the Tennessee tradition of center-right Republican Senators like Howard Baker, Fred Thompson, and Bill Frist. I supported Alexander in the Presidential primaries in 1996.

The job of Whip is to keep the caucus together on important votes. Lott, as a former Whip AND Majority Leader, knows how to do this. He is well versed on Senate rules and practices, and has been there long enough to know most of our Senators pretty well - and to know what it takes to get the stragglers on board.

Funny, the left feels perfectly entitled to call Lott a "segregationist" for ill-worded salute to Strom Thurmond on his birthday, but when we call Murtha a Defeatocrat for overtly and repeatedly advocating cutting-and-running from Iraq, or question his judgment in accepting "Man of the Year" award from Code Pink AFTER they raised money for the Iraqi terrorists shooting at our troops, they object.

This election only 3 republicans got my vote. (CA governor, CA lt governor and my congressman) If they don't immediately get their collective heads out of their own rears and stop acting like the "Office of Navel Contemplation" I'll change that in 2008 to cast zero votes for the GOP.

They aren't going to get any votes from me merely by claiming the other side is worse. At least the other side is open about their attitude towards me.

Before the FCC ruling that a company could own more than one radio station in a market, satellite radio did not have a chance against terrasterial radio.

Since that ruling, music formats on the whole have been watered down and live local jocks were replaced with wancasted air talents from a totally different city and sometimes state. Individual stations were not as important as the cluster or the designated cash cow in that cluster. So overall programing suffered because the station you liked to listen to didn't have to be number 1 or put out the best product. this is because advertising is packaged and sold as a cluster not for any one particular station.

Overall radio listernship is down from 20 years ago. People started drifting away from radio because they were given less of a reason to listen.

This gave satellite radio the toe hold it has in the market. Why would you pay for something you used to get free? Because you are disatisfied with the current product.

The elected Republican leadership could be facing the same thing. People might start drifting away from the Republican Party because they are not given any reason to stay. Obviously they chose Libertarian as the party more similiar to their own.

Florence Schmieg:

When Lott was forced to resign and Frist came aboard everything went downhill in the Senate. Politics isn't pretty. With Dems in control, Republicans need a savvy political player who knows what to expect and how to intercept it. Choir boys like Frist and less ruthless, less, wily types like Alexander would likely be destroyed with the Dems in control.

BOOK CRITICAL OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO USE THE N-WORD

Los Angeles, CA., Author H. Lewis Smith has written a thought provoking, culturally divided book that will not only spark heated conversation, but can also bring about real change. The N-word is often used in the African American community amongst each other and is generally not a problem when spoken by another African American. However, once the word is used by a Caucasian person, it brings on other effects. The question is "who can use the word and why?" Smith believes it is a word that should be BURIED!!!!

The book is written in a manner that all can understand. The points are well-taken and the wording is easy to follow. There are quotes from great people in our history including Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman, James Baldwin and many, many others. Smith has mixed history with honesty, love with life, education with effects. This is a great book for educators, parents, managers, professionals, newsmen, and anyone else wanting an in-depth look at the N-word, the effects and the solutions. A MUST READ!!!!

H. Lewis Smith has studied the idioms, meanings and the psychological impact of words, its energy and vibratory effects on the human mind for more than two decades. He has been a guest on several talk shows, The Power, The Exchange, Andrea Williams' Jamin 98.3 and many more. To learn more about Bury that Sucka, please visit http://www.burythatsucka.com

James Cloninger:

My objections to Lott are two-fold. One, his stupid remarks at Strom's little shindig, but even more, his obstruction to controlling government pork. "Porkbusters" has quite the profile on him. Putting a big spender as a prominent face on the Republican party really isn't the sort of image they should be going for. After all, it part of the reason the GOP faithful were dispirited about this lot (pun intended) in the first place.
