It was 95 - 2, with the two no votes being from Republican Senators Santorum (PA) and Bunning (KY).
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly confirmed Robert Gates as the next defense secretary, replacing Donald Rumsfeld, an architect of the increasingly unpopular Iraq war.
The Senate voted 95-2 to approve President George W. Bush's nominee only 24 hours after Gates won the unanimous endorsement of the Armed Services Committee -- and just as a long-awaited bipartisan report arrived, urging more diplomacy and fewer U.S. troops in Iraq.Only Republicans Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and Jim Bunning of Kentucky voted against Gates.
Senators from both parties praised the ex-CIA chief's candor; Gates had told them bluntly the United States was not winning the war in Iraq.
"Dr. Gates spoke with candor -- a candor that has been sorely missing from the Department of Defense under this administration," said Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat. "He recognized the high price that our troops are paying for the current policy."
So, according to the Senate, criticizing the war in Iraq and announcing that we are not winning appear to be the only job requirements to be Secretary of Defense.

Actually there's only one requirement: not being Rumsfeld.

Well, Lee, I don't have a link for you but Gates did advocate initiating a bombing campaign in Nicaragua where the Sandinista govrnment was popularly elected. His testimony about when he knew of the Iran-Conta deal was dubious. I am sure if he had not deferentially told the Senate Committee exactly what they wanted to hear they would have quickly revisited those issues.

So once again Poppy Bush has to bring in the elders to bail baby Bush out of the fire.
It's a "crying" shame that Poppy is using Gates and Baker to try and clean up the mess he sees his son has made of the presidency.
Another failed business, another rescue needed since baby Bush can't do anything right.
Iraqi's had lived without electricity part of the time but now its more often off than on. Bombs exploding everywhere. Iraqi oil revenue down. At least 3 million living outside the country.
Oh yes, George, Poppy is sending in Bobby Gates to try and clean your diapers. Uncle Jim will see what he can do to set the timetable for withdrawl and baby Bush can go back to cutting brush. Poor Laura, what a dumb one she picked.
Today, ten American troops died.
Fooolish Americans........

Well, not the only ones. But I would say that yes, rationality and truthfulness are probably two of the more important job requirements.

And this vote is further proof that Jim Bunning is completely insane.

But you're right, it would have been enjoyable seeing Bush do something so desperate and insane as what you suggest.

I must have missed the secret swearing in ceremony of the new Congress, followed by the secret vote on Bolton. However, I was aware of the side-stepping recess appointment, due to the lack of Republican support for Bolton.

Brian,
The Dems don't have a majority until confirmation day in January 2007. So, technically they can't "vote down anyone they want without breaking a sweat" yet.
That's probably why Jo basically stated you were making a fool out of yourself. Not the most politic thing to say, of course. But rarely are manners politic when politics or religion are involved.

Nope. Don't see it.
The Dems don't have a majority until confirmation day in January 2007.
That's true. I suggest you save this reminder for those on the right who are falling over themselves blaming Dems for the current mess.
