Don Surber says for Congress to give the Pentagon what it needs to continue the fight.

AP reported tonight "Pentagon wants $99.7B more for wars."

So give it to them.

Congress authorized the war in Afghanistan 5 years ago and the war in Iraq 4 years ago.

This is not "M*A*S*H." Wars are not sitcoms. You cannot cancel them after a few seasons because they are unpopular.

I expect senators and representatives to understand this going in, before they vote to allow the commander in chief to send young men and young women into harm's way.

He also looks at what Hillary said in the past, compared to what she is saying today about Iraq.

A very well done simplification of a complex problem. In the good old US of A more is always good and always better -the answer to everything, including death and war. That is, if you're an armchair soldier/warrior/general/Secty of Defense right winger.

Shove your liberal technicalities and literalisms up your ass, civil behavior! This is war, and we don't need no declaration! Last I checked, the Wolverines in Red Dawn didn't have to declare war before sticking it to the commies.

Happy Holidays.

Nearly 100 BILLION dollars. For what? How much of this money is pure slush, headed directly into the pockets of the defense "contractors" and "private secrity firms" that have become malignant tumors allowed to thrive by the current administration under the guise of protecting America. Wake Up!

Support the Troops. Demand accountability. No more blank checks. Stop this madness.

Mac Lorry:

It's going to be interesting to see what the new Congress does with this request. If they approve the money the Democrats are going to piss off their leftist wing, but if they don't, they'll play into the hands of the Republicans for being soft on national defense. Wining the Presidency and retaining both houses of Congress in 2008 is the Democrats' primary goal, so the leftists will just have to wait for their reward. I figure the Democrats will approve the money but attach some nasty amendments to the bill. Bush will be forced into a position to either take the whole nasty bill or veto it and risk having to withdraw too soon because of funding.

The interesting question is what amendments will the Democrats attach? Maybe repeal of certain Patriot act provisions or something that infringes on domestic gun rights. Maybe some of the lefties can tell us what's on their wish list. Remember, it can't be too far to the left because the Democrats won't approve of anything that risks their 2008 goals.

Oh yes - here we go - trash talking about defense contractors again! Free enterprise always is portrayed as evil in the left's lexicon, which of course never prevents them from enjoying the fruits of capitalism.

Why aren't you griping about the massive amounts of money sent to Louisiana and New Orleans that has been WASTED by the local polilticians there? Democrats all! Or maybe I just answered my own question?

Meanwhile, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU and GOD BLESS our country and our people and keep us safe.

Of course Hillary has to sing a new tune now. And what a tight rope she'll be walking. It should prove to be quite amusing.

Remember Comrade Moore's threat? He stated in no uncertain terms that the democrats must give the terrorists a victory RIGHT NOW or he would turn on his beloved fellow socialist regressives.

Could you immagine the movie Moore could make about Hillary? And he wouldn't even have to fill it with nothing but lies, half truths, and deception. He could actually tell the truth about the insider trading, the evil investment scams, the body count, Juanita Broderick, the immoral use of federal agencies against her personal enemies, the disaster of hillarycare, etc. Hell, it might be the first movie Moore ever made that would be worth seeing.

What part of "We are at war" don't you guys get? It's not "Mr. Bush's war", or "the Republicans' war".

There's a time for smugness, and this isn't it. You guys should give some thought to what happens if we surrender and run as you seem to want. All you seem to care about is tearing down Bush, regardless of the consequences for us, our troops, the Iraqis, our allies, or anybody else besides the Democratic Party. It's the vilest kind of arrogance I can think of. Why is it that you think Bush is a greater enemy than all the religious zealots in the middle east? Do you really think peace will break out and we'll all be dancing in the streets if we pull out of Iraq? Do you really think these whackjob terrorists care that you don't support your own government? What makes you exempt from common sense? Jeezus.

And as I remember, Congress did indeed authorize the use of force, nearly unanimously, as the President and Commander in Chief saw fit. So, yes, CB, you must have dozed off, about five years ago.

I think fraud and waste should be investigated and eliminated to the extent that it can be, which admittedly, is a tough thing to do. It should make anyone mad to see so much money unaccounted for, but not just in the case of Iraq. For those who think that is a reason to cut funds to the troops, I wonder if your reasoning extends to even more fraud and waste that has been discovered year after year in the Department of Education and numerous other government programs right here in the U.S. Maybe we should shut down all government programs until they can be run more efficiently. Hmm. Now that isn't such a bad idea.

I wonder if the millions of people who were slaughtered after the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam would share the sanguine view you express.

You know, if we had stayed there and won, there's every bit as much likelihood that Vietnam would have achieved a stable government and become a friendly trading partner with the U.S. -- at far less cost in blood and much more quickly.

While I won't argue with gr... (Below threshold)

While I won't argue with groucho about waste and overspending - sadly, it's the nature of our government to overlook such things - the "no bid" contract thing is blown way out of proportion. Halliburton was awarded a no bid contract for putting out oil fires and a few other duties in the beginning because of secrecy issues. It was entirely legal. (A previous administration awarded no-bid contracts to Halliburton and no one complained.) The oil fires ended up being only a fraction of original estimates and Halliburton was paid only a fraction of that $7b for the work on that. Otherwise bidding has been an open and above board deal.

All the rankling began with one company who wanted to bid on the oil fire aspect of the contract and raised hell when Halliburton was given a more comprehensive package because they already had people, assets and systems in place for such a vast array of duties that no othr US company could conceivably compete with.

Now everyone thinks Halliburton has done all the work in Iraq and all without having to participate in the bidding process. This is completely untrue. Just a few months after the onset of the war there were literally thousands of bids and considerations from US companies, Iraqi companies and other countries which participated in the war effort.

Are there those in Washington using their influence to award contracts pertaining to the war? Probably, but I don't think it's as rampant as some say. Like Lorie said at 11:42am, I'm just as concerned with so much more waste right here at home on social services and public schools.

You can expect hearings in the coming months on the subject of Iraq War graft and no-bid contracts -- hearings that will be held thanks to the Democrats in Congress.

Sounds like just about everyone here would agree that's a good thing -- finding out just how bad it is and dealing with it if it is out of control. Anyone care to argue against having these hearings? Yes, there's someone in the back with their hand up -- the Republican in the $3,000 Armani suit - you think it's a bad idea?

My own suspicion is that what is uncovered regarding graft and corruption in connection with the Iraq war will boggle the mind, but then I'm a liberal - and am easily boggled by this sort of thing.
