From AP, this sad news...
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Gerald R. Ford, who picked up the pieces of Richard Nixon's scandal-shattered White House as the 38th and only unelected president in America's history, has died, his wife, Betty, said Tuesday. He was 93.
"My family joins me in sharing the difficult news that Gerald Ford, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather has passed away at 93 years of age," Mrs. Ford said in a brief statement issued from her husband's office in Rancho Mirage. "His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country."The statement did not say where Ford died or list a cause of death. Ford had battled pneumonia in January 2006 and underwent two heart treatments - including an angioplasty - in August at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
He was the longest living president, followed by Ronald Reagan, who also died at 93. Ford had been living at his desert home in Rancho Mirage, Calif., about 130 miles east of Los Angeles.
Ford will forever be remember as the first president to assume power without ever being voted into office (he replaced Vice President Spiro Agnew), and his pardon of Richard Nixon. There were also several familiar faces in Ford's White House including George Bush, Sr., and these two...

Rummy rockin' the pork chops with that polyester rug? Wow!!
I always liked Ford. He seemed like dthe kind of guy everything passed off as a dumba**, but who was acually smart enough to spend 30 years in Washington without getting caught with
a. A male hooker under his desk
b. A female intern under his desk
c. Or shady business dealings
He should have wrote a book titled "If you have to ask who the dumba** in the room is, It's probaly you"

Whoever had taken over for Nixon would have suffered Ford's political fate. He was a good man. A better man, in fact, than he was a politician, and that is the best praise you can offer any elected official.

Great. Now we're stuck with Carter as the "elder statesman" of our living presidents.

Farewell, our good and faithful servant.
And John, GHWB is actually the "elder statesman". He was born in Jun 1924, Carter was born four months later in October.

Alia,
Don't expect the facts about his age relative to GHWB to diminish the lavish attention the press will now give Carter.

Since Carter is the first President that I really remember (I was born a few months before the Watergate break-in), let's just say that he's no elder statesman in my book. Any respect that I may have had for him for his Habitat for Humanity efforts had been squandered long ago and I now remember why my parents, both Democrats, were so relieved when Reagan was elected.
As for Ford, I don't need to remember his Presidency to know, just by the way he carried himself afterwards, that he was probably one of the nicest, most decent men to hold the office. I saw a clip of him this morning in which he called politics an "honorable profession". He seems to have been the embodiment of that.
