Pelosi's position as Speaker of the House is really going to her head. If she keeps this up, soon her aides will have to grease the sides of her head just to get her through the doors of the House.
A new Congress convenes today with a narrow Democratic majority lording over a despondent Republican minority.
While the full weight of Republicans' powerlessness sinks in after 12 years of control, Democrats are celebrating the historic election today of the first female speaker of the House."We have waited over 200 years for this time to come," Mrs. Pelosi said on the eve of her selection as speaker, a position that makes her second in line to the presidency after Vice President Dick Cheney.
"We will not just break through a glass ceiling, we will break through a marble ceiling," she said. "In more than 200 years of history, there was an established pecking order -- and I cut in line."
After calling herself "the most powerful woman in America," Mrs. Pelosi flexed her right muscle like a weight lifter to much applause at an event yesterday titled a "women's tea."
"All right, let's hear it for the power," she screamed as the jubilant applause continued.
Wow. That's really Obnoxious. Humility is far more attractive than arrogance, something she has yet to learn. It would also be smart for her to remember that the American voters put her in this position, and they can take it away from her. Let's pray that's the case two years from now.
And as USMC Pilot correctly reminded me, her own Democratic party could remove her from the office of Speaker sooner than two years if they become tired of her obnoxious attitude.
Update: Surprisingly, Andrea Mitchell thinks Pelosi's attitude is unseemly as well. Here's Andrea's question
Are you happy with this big celebration that Nancy Pelosi has planned for herself? Is it a bit unseemly to have Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett and the dinners and the lunches and the brunches and the trip to Baltimore to rename the street in honor of her. Isn't this a little bit too imperial?
I'd say that comment must have smarted, but I don't think Nancy is feeling any pain right now.
Watch the video of Andrea's question here.

Going to slightly disagree here. Well, not so much as disagree as say it doesn't really matter.
Arrogance and obnoxiousness are traits of politicians as is love of power. We should not be surprised.
An expression of phony humility, to me, is worse than being honest about their obnoxious, power hungry ways.
The comments above apply to politicans regardless of party affiliation.

Your comment is well taken. However, where as most politicians are smart enough to conceal those traits, Nancy Pelosi is standing on a soap box screaming them to the world. There is a reason that most politicians use the "expression of phony humility" route. It at least keeps them from looking realy stupid. Pelosi's mouth is starting to set her up as thinking she is "Queen of America", and about to disband parliment.

Why is it that when people do not have a cogent argument to make, or a valid criticism, they automatically turn to the "humility card"?
It seems to me that there are two types of humility. There is the equalitarian or leveling humility of those who think that no one should be in a position of power over them; and, so, they try to pull down anyone who has an ounce of confidence or assertiveness in our society. This is the attempt to establish a general false humility so that everyone will feel better.
Of course, respect and civility are different than humility. I personally think most people deserve respect and civility--that is until they lose it through their own actions. This is not, however, humility.
The second type of humility, which is true humility, is the kind that recognizes that there are others who are better at certain things than we are, or more worthy of respect and admiration than we are.
If you believe in God, then you should of necessity be humble before God since he/she is after all the all-knowing, all-powerful being of the universe. That does not mean that you owe humility to your fellow man--at least not until he/she has earned it.
So, let's stop all this talk of humility and instead demand that Pelosi and her party live up to the promises they have made. When they fail, as all politicians do when they abandon negotiation and compromise, there will be plenty of humble pie for everyone.

I suspect that in next two years, there will be a number of stories like this, and the more conservatives huff and puff and get red in the face over them, the more they will be ignored by the MSM.
Of course, if this were Newt Gingrich or any other Republican Speaker, stories like this would be getting above-the-fold coverage all day, every day, 24/7.
The only remedy is defeating the Democrats electorally, but it remains to be seen whether the GOP will get its act together enough to make this happen. Personally, I'm not hopeful.

Nancy Pelosi's stint as House Speaker will (mercifully) be a brief one. First of all, she reckons without the U.S. Senate at her peril. She and her arrogant minions can blather all they want, but the bottom line is that anything they pass then has to go to the Senate where the majority is only 1 and Senator Joe Lieberman is definitely the wild card in THAT equation. So they can waste their first 100 hours passing whateverinhell they want - the chances of it getting by the Senate are slender at best. And the failure of their feverish agenda will make them look as ridiculous as their behavior already does.
Second, should Speaker Pelosi show signs of harming La Clinton's presidential campaign, she will be summarily dealt with as only Hillary Rodham Clinton and her cabal can do!
Third - by the end of the 2 year Democratic House majority - the American people will be so disgusted with the Dems if they continue their present behavior that they will reverse the majority in record time. Do they honestly think that permitting that humbug Charlie Rangel to evict the Vice President of the United States from his office is calculated to endear them to any but the most deranged among them?

Man. You've got some chutzpah. The Republicans have ruled Washington like some abysmal combination of drunken sailor on shore leave and abusive, domineering father. When Newt arrived in Washington he was feted far more than any preceding Speaker. Of course it has long been the stance of the GOP that which is okay and permissible for themselves is evil, decadent and corrupt when enjoyed by Democrats.
I am going to enjoy the next few years as GOP hacks such as yourself and Andrea Mitchell have to choke on your own hypocrisy. The GOP was domineering, self-congratulatory and uncompromising; now that the tables have been turned you are going to whine and expect a comity you never offered. It would be high comedy were it not so pathetic.
P.S.- Jo, we live in a representative Democracy. When the representatives of the people are elected they speak for their constituents; you did not vote, personally, for Pelosi but your if your rep did then he or she did so with the authority of his or her constituents. Hey conservatives, don't be such a bunch of complainers. Here's what your new Minority Leader, Rep. Boehner had to say:
"It's sometimes said the Founding Fathers would not recognize the government that exists in Washington today. . .that it has grown in size and scope far beyond anything they ever imagined, much less endorsed or advocated for our future. But today marks an occasion I think the Founding Fathers would view approvingly. My fellow Americans: whether you're a Republican, a Democrat, or an independent, this is a cause for celebration."
Would it actually kill you to stop complaining and demonizing just for one day, and celebrate the fact that our nation, lagging years behind most other industrialized nations, finally has a woman in a position of power? Can you understand how that might go to a person's head just a little, and make them a little exuberant? Your Minority Leader had the class to celebrate this event and say some nice things, so either say something nice too or just shut up, for just one day. You can go back to whining about how unfair it all is, and hoping that the Democrats fail (whatever the consequences for the country, and making little gold images of W to worship tomorrow, k?

For a group of people whose biggest statement for months before the election was "We won, get over it", you righties sure can't take it, can you? You remind me of the bullies on the playground who took on a little kid, thinking they would have an easy mark, only to find out that kid had been studying karate. Once your asses get kicked, you are the first to whine like a spoiled child.
We've had to listen to you all proclaim how the dems would never take another seat in congress, how far off the mark we were, how we have no support etc, for years, now, and we've taken it. Now it's YOUR turn, shut up and take it like MEN, not spoiled babies who got their hands slapped for grabbing something they shouldn't have.
You people have acted like children since 1994 when you took over congress. Anyone old enough to remember that? Newt and his buddies PUBLICALLY said they weren't even talking to any dems for 100 DAYS, not 100 HOURS, and they didn't. Made complete asses out of themselves, and you rightie idiots cheered for it. Drunk with power? You righties had that title for 12 years, and especially for the last 6.
This is a historical occassion, there has NEVER been a woman in that chair. Get over her celebrating that fact for women all over the country. And indeed, the world.
Grow up and get over it. Your leaders as well as yourselves sound like pathetic little whiners. And THIS is the ONLY party that could keep us safe? From WHAT? You certainly don't sound like a masculine, mature, grown up party to me. They sound suspiciously like the babies on the schoolyard. I remember the R'cons doing this on many occasions. Their biggest fear is that the Democrats will treat them the way they treated the dems. And they should be treated the same way. But the Democrats have more class than that. We will treat them as EQUALS until they revert to their old ways. As far as Nancy P. goes, being the first woman to ever hold that position, she deserves to celebrate a little. I have not heard of any of her party that are running from her. The blogmaster here is to be commended. As for how many of the posts are by the same person, it's funny you should say that. They say the exact same thing about the righties on Raw Story.
Sorry, but I really suspect that you are as outnumbered as you think. The thing is that you have been listening to people whose goal was to divide this country, dumb it down and conquer us from the inside, just like we were warned about by Ben Franklin. They have told you about how terrible we are, how we want everything for nothing, how we want the terrorists to win, how we are all terrorists ourselves, how we all have islamic middle names and we meet in secret at night to overthrow Christmas.
What they don't tell you is that we are ALL Americans, and it's time that we start treating each other with more respect than they have been treaing us with. If we continue to let them divide us like this, we will be in a civil war of our own before long, and we will have no one but our own "leaders" to blame. What good does it do for us to be at each other's throats when there are people all over the world who would do that for us? We don't need to take that on for ourselves.
Here is my real point, after all that. If you want respect, you have to give respect. It's the ONLY way it works. For the last 12 years, we have been treated to the worst display of disrespect that one party has ever shown to another in this country. And now for you to sit and cry like a batch of babies is not particularly flattering. Your party sat there for the last 5 years bad mouthing the rest of us at every opportunity. I've been called a cmmunist, a nazi, a traitor, a terrorist, gay, a seditionist, a wiccan satanist, and that is just what I can remember off the top of my head. Respect is a two way street, and if you treat people like shit when you are on top, chances are good you will have to eat a fair amount of it yourself when the situation is reversed.
Make any sense?

After all yhe GOP members were the ONLY one who never were intoxicated with power. They were low profile, did not brag and served the country with humility and modesty. Now the GOP members have become whiners and cannot bear losses gracefully. These people destroyed the US financially by running up huge deficits and borrowing and people like LJD, USMC Pilot cannot recognize them. It looks like the US sent a whole bunch of people like USMC Pilot and thus the US Military is in the situation it is in Iraq. All people like USMC Pilot et al know is kill innocent Iraqi children, old people and women and claim that they are terrorists. They may escape time because of a good legal defense, etc, but the Divine Court of the LORD will not spare them. Those of you who know, RNC Chair Lee Atwater (Father Bush's Campaign Manager and strategist) dies at the old age of 40 years and a few months. So doing good every day and being honesty is important.
The last honest GOP President was Dwight Eisenhower.

Contrary to most of you, I ACTUALLY WATCHED Nancy Pelosi's speech on C-SPAN. As usual, the regressives have taken her comments and actions totally out of context. Speaker Pelosi was jubilantly referring to her GENDER, not her political party or even herself, as *finally* having reached such a prestigious position of power. The double-standards many people have for what's appropriate for men vs. for women is outrageous. Speaker Pelosi's comments and demeanor were nowhere near "inappropriate" for this occasion. Rather, this truly is a time for celebration for ALL women in this country.
As for critical women like Andrea Mitchell, well, women unfortunately are very often their own worst enemy.

That being said there is absolutely nothing the democrats did to deserve their victories. The Media was resposible more than anything in this deceitfull fraud perpetrated on our Country. The Criminal democrats showed just how greedy and criminal they are when they still tried to steal yet another election down in Florida. That is just how the Rats opperate and they are proud of it. Huh? First of all, the most popular news program nationally is Fox News - the polar opposite of "democratic propagandist" media. The Republicans have had the floor for the past 10 years - and in the past 6 all you've seen of Democrats on ANY of the daily news is a quick sound bite - while the Republicans get most of the face time (Sunday morning talk has been almost exclusively the following structure at the round tables - 2-3 conservatives, 1 liberal).
Smears and lies? Joe Wilson, WMD's in Iraq, Tax cuts benefitting the middle class, Foley not on leaders "radar", etc. Take your pick from your side. THAT is why everyone is fed up with you people.
People like you, Rob, live in bubble where you've been able to spout your nastiness without much talkback. What you see on this post is what idiots like you should be getting "24/7" to remind you that your opinions are a small minority of this country and justifiably so.

These folks had a plan and they put it into action as soon as they took over the government. You, their supporters took 12 years to wake up and smell the coffee. People raised in the Reagan era and since then have been screwed.
