Barney Frank Accuses the Bush Administration of "ethnic cleansing by inaction"

It's so insane that you must see and hear it to believe it. He actually says that President Bush committed the atrocity of genocide on the citizens of New Orleans via Hurricane Katrina. The sound quality of the YouTube video is quite bad, so you may have to listen to it a few times.

Get ready for a lot more of this in the next two years, folks, as the Democrats are going to accuse the Republicans of everything short of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. I hope that the American people wise up and fast to the realization that their electing nut cases such as this guy to run the government was a monstrous mistake. The lunatics are running the asylum.

Bryan at Hot Air is also following this story and is so ticked off that he posted the telephone number to Rep. Frank's office, which is (202)225-5931.

I couldn't agree with him more when he writes this:

Genocide. Let that word work its way around your mind for an moment. Genocide is the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group. Think about that. And then watch the most grotesque public statement made by any elected official in the United States in the last 100 years.

He also recommends that you read this piece about why things went so horribly wrong in New Orleans, and it's not because of the Bush Administration.

Update: One commenter who says he lives in NO writes this:

GOOD for Barney Frank! Finally someone with enough personal courage to speak the truth. Keep up the good work, Mr Frank! Us here in New Orleans appreciate you and your fellow democrats.

I can not let that comment go and have to ask the commenter a question:

Do you really believe that George Bush perpetrated genocide on the citizens of New Orleans? You really believe that he intended to kill the citizens of New Orleans en masse to make Louisiana more Republican? The whole accusation is so freakishly sick and twisted, I have a hard time getting my mind around it.

And if it's so easy for you to believe this about President Bush, then why aren't you accusing the governor of Louisiana and the mayor of NO of the same thing? They, after all, were the ones who had complete control over the miserably inadequate evacuation plans, yet failed to implement even those efficiently. The mayor of NO is the one who failed to utilized the buses that sat like tombs in school parking lots.

I feel very bad for you in that your life and city have been turned upside down, but for you to blame it all on President Bush while giving the governor and mayor a pass is really unbelievable to me.

Update II: Bryan at Hot Air has the transcript of Frank's comments and in his statement he accuses of the Bush Administration of ethnic cleansing in the sense that they are deliberately allowing the city to sit in ruins to as to prevent poor, African American citizens from returning so as to make New Orleans more Republican.

Here is the transcript, which is missing quite a few words because the audio was so bad:

"It's not ethnic cleansing in the sense that they're killing people or [driving] people out, but what we need to recognize here is that, they're in this happy position for them, where the federal government does nothing, as they become richer and richer, because well not only black people needed housing assistance, but they were [predominantly poor, who did it], to simply not do anything to alleviate this housing crisis which ... was being exacerbated by Katrina ... [inaudible] they, they, they let the hurricane do the ethnic cleansing, because then they're, all they're doing is not resisting it, that's why I call ethnic cleansing by inaction, and I know that there are people who were very happy that, as a result, ... [inaudible] ... [so that] Louisiana would become a more widely Republican [city] ... [inaudible] ... because if you lose 100,000 black voters ... then you have to take a state that was prodominately Republican and made it [inaudible]."

So he's not accusing the Bush Administration of actually killing NO citizens but instead of letting the hurricane do it for them. What?!

Yeah, someone ought to do something to kick out the worthless politicians who are actually responsible for the lack of progress in New Orleans. Like the Mayor, who keeps backing folks who are rebuilding in flood-prone areas (where the utility company doesn't want to waste money because it's well, stupid), and who's screwing up most of the rest of the recovery effort.

Oh, wait - the residents of the city voted his worthless ass back in? And he's a Democrat?

How about the Congressman from that district? Oh, he's too busy taking bribes and celebrating the elevation of Nancy Pelosi to Speaker? Well, they didn't reelect him right? Oh, they did?

Katrina is such a glaring example of what happens when Democrats run a nanny-state from the city through the state government that they HAVE to blame Bush for their disaster.

The city Democrats failed to execute their own disaster plan.

The State failed to execute its disaster plan.

The best they could complain about was that the federal government didn't violate laws by brushing aside the incompetent Democrats in state and local office and do something.

Now we see them blaming the federal government for the state utilities not getting turned on. At what point do the Democrats believe they should actually do the job they were elected to do in the state? Apparently, they think the job description of mayor and governor is to wait for their federal government check and complain that nothing is ever their fault or their responsibility.

BTW, I'm no friend of Nagin. He gives lip service to the poor people of NOLA, but when it comes down to crunch time, he usually buddies up to the rich and powerful. And for all the face time he got on the networks during the crisis, he sure disappeared during the recovery. And yet they re-elected him. Go figure.

As a utility worker, and someone who has worked to restore parts of NOLA (Catholic Charities, Camden Diocese and Knights of Columbus are still sending crews down to gut then rehab homes), I can say there is plenty of govt incompetance and malfeasance. But the utilities are moving into those areas as fast as they are allowed to and the infrastructure can handle.
Even on blocks where the grid is ready to go live, the buildings often are not. Restore power to a building that has not been properly checked/gutted/rehabed and you get fires and electrocution hazards.
It would actually be easier to run power gas and water to somplace that never had it before than to get all of NOLA services again.

Frank certainly backpedaled quickly, didn't he? Now, he's trying to pretend that "ethnic cleansing" is merely moving people out of the way (that's been called "forced relocation" for the last hundred years or so, by the way).

How does that work, since they DIDN'T LEAVE THE COUNTRY? The whole point of that minor form that Frank suddenly "means" is getting rid of one ethnic group, so they don't mix with other ethnic groups.

...so they made them, er, spread out and live in a lot of different places all over the US, instead of letting them keep living in the segregated neighborhoods of New Orleans.

"Yeah, we're going to 'ethnically cleanse' the United States by, er, moving the poor residents of New Orleans to other parts of the country, so the crime rates everywhere else can go up and we can spend billions of dollars supporting them and paying for the increased crime... no, we're not going to kill them, or force them to live anywhere in particular, or threaten them with violence. We're going to 'ethnically cleanse' the residents of New Orleans by, er, letting them re-elect a moron mayor, and allow the local corrupt government to, er, do what it always did."

Does Frank's new definition of "ethnic cleansing" involve forced bathing, or mandatory astringent treatments? Maybe a new, experimental laundry detergent?

What about Mr. Nagin and his handwringingly pathetic complete failure to come to the aid of his people he represented through being voted into office.
Sometimes the best help you're ever going to

Now, all Orwellian-like, the term means 'removing people without harming a hair on their little heads' because it might help Barney Frank's foot-in-mouth problem.
