Democrat Rep. William Jefferson Does It Again

He was found with $90,000 in his freezer and is currently under investigation by the feds for bribery. And now, just one day into the new session, he sends out fundraising letters on his Congressional letterhead:

Last week, House Democrats were shocked to receive a letter from Jefferson -- on his official Congressional stationery, no less -- asking colleagues to donate money to help him retire his campaign debt.

"As you know," the letter, dated Dec. 29, 2006, began, "I recently won a grueling race for re-election." (And won resoundingly in a runoff, despite the ongoing federal probe in which two people have already pleaded guilty.) "In order to get our message out and otherwise compete, we incurred over $200,000 in debt.

"Therefore, I would deeply appreciate it if you would assist me in retiring my debt by contributing $1,000 (or whatever amount you can afford) to my campaign," Jefferson wrote.

Nice letter. Too bad it violates House ethics rules. It's a no-no to use taxpayer resources to raise campaign dough.

Some Democratic aides were downright aghast at Jefferson's audacity at using franked envelopes, official letterhead and the House internal mail service in a blatant violation of House rules.

"We were going to send him a check in a freezer bag," joked one chief of staff to a Democratic Member of Congress who received Jefferson's solicitation.

Another, only slightly snarkier, Democratic House chief of staff pitched in with: "He's got $90,000 in his freezer, why can't he buy some stationery and stamps?" (Answer: Because the Feds took the money!) The chief of staff added, "Some people will never learn. Can't he go away already?"

Ouch! How embarrassing, especially since Jefferson is facing possible indictment for bribery. I'm surprised his staff wasn't as meticulous as possible in following the rules.

Taxpayer funds, Houes letterhead, Taxpayer postage stamps and evidently his house staff is campaigning for him while being paid by the taxpayers. Isn't this about 10 years worth of 'prison' time in itself?

I forgot, he's a dhimmi and Peeeloshi will only go after republican corruption.

They are a free standing culture of corruptions but it's still comical. Best comedy show of the century took place this week in the house. The comedy writers in Holy-wood will hang themselves in shame.

Obviously you were against him before they were for him, right? And it took you two hours how to figure out how to format your response in Word before you could cut and paste it, and then write your response here?

Doubtful. I think Foley was thoroughly trounced on the right, as well.

Then again, if this were a GOP congressmen, he'd have been kicked off the Hill within a week of the discovery of the chilly $90k.

Nope. Wm Jefferson is a Democrat. He losses his committee seat, but he'll not lose his seat. And a majority of his idiot constituency will keep voting him back.

The accused lied. Yes. That's what they do.

The REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP did nothing for them. Left them on their own, as they SHOULD have done.

Removing a Congressman from office is a rather difficult affair (they couldn't even boot McCarthy at his nadir).

Ney, Cunningham, and Foley were left to float on their own.

Delay was Nifonged and they defended him, as they should have. His "indictment" was a major travesty.

Funny, when, say, Studds was accused of pedophilia --- and ADMITTED to it --- the Dems gave him a standing ovation. Murtha is held up as being "honorable", which is kinda comical. Reid has tons of ethical baggage that nobody wishes to deal with. Was it Conyers using staff on his re-election campaign? Mollohan is in charge of the money for the agency INVESTIGATING him.

So, please tell me more stories of how the Dems don't circle the wagons like nobody else.
