According to him, the true villains are the Bush Administration and Rudy Guiliani.
A furious Rep. Jerrold Nadler branded President Bush, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Mayor Bloomberg 9/11 villains for their treatment of Ground Zero workers.
"The villains are no longer the terrorists," Nadler said yesterday at a news conference in Washington."The villains live in the White House and in Gracie Mansion, or at least lived in Gracie Mansion in the last administration, and in the governor's office."
During an interview with the Daily News, Nadler (D-Manhattan) blamed the Bush administration for lying to the public about environmental conditions in lower Manhattan, blamed Giuliani for failing to protect Ground Zero rescue workers and blamed Bloomberg for failing to help workers who are dying today.
Asked specifically about his criticism of Giuliani, Nadler said, "Somebody in the Giuliani administration made a decision not to apply the OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] laws.
"It was more important to get it cleaned up quickly than to make sure that the people who worked there worked under safe conditions," he said.
Allahpundit speculates that Nadler's staff is writing a clarification right now explaining that he was taken out of context. I have a feeling Nadler won't back down but will instead pile on. He will take a look at the President's latest poll numbers from CBS that say Bush has an approval rating that is at Nixonian levels (which I don't buy) and stick with what he said because he thinks it's politically safe to do so. I could be wrong of course.

Knowing what we all know about those who chose to work at Ground Zero in the days immediately following 9/11, I doubt one of them was concerned with whether or not OSHA safeguards were in effect. They just wanted to rescue anyone who might still be alive, and then give those who died there a chance to be buried somewhere other than that smoking, rumbling grave the terrorists created in Lower Manhattan.
Nadler should be ashamed. If anyone ever needs a cornerstone for their argument that Democrats have lost their minds, use these words of Nadler's. The debate's over immediately.

As usual the ignorance of Priestap (reinforced by the denial that Bush's poll numbers are at Nixonian levels) and the commenters defies imagination. Rather than discuss the issue of the health problems of the workers and rescuers these folks resort to the usual response here - mockery.
I didn't read that Nadler said the rescue effort should have been postponed. The truth is there is a question about how the EPA conducted itself during that period of time. The truth is there are many many workers who have gotten sick and have had claims resisted. Those are the facts. But, of course, the extreme righties twist those facts and conclude that Nadler is deflecting blame from the terrorists. Pathetic. It's been six years and some have gotten no help at all until recently.
Some of you should try enlightening yourselves about the issue. Why, even Fox has some info for you.

In the context of failing to care for the medical problems of course the responsibility TODAY lies with those Nadler has listed. Geez. I suppose you think we should ask the terrorists for the medical care? And they, of course, would be willing to provide it. But then I imagine you think killing terrorists would solve the medical problems.

Unless, of course, Osama is still too busy building roads and schools and day care centers and won't be able to divert enough funds toward health care. Then maybe we could just send everyone to Cuba for real "world-class" healthcare.

While the workers would seem to have some legitimate claims about health problems, Nadler deserves to be derided and ridiculed for his outlandish analogies.
You completely misrepresent LJD's point (especially with your idiotic "have the terrorists pay for their healthcare" jibe) and give Nadler a pass because you feel his statement's attempt to rectify a wrong.
And denying the poll numbers is easy when you look at the specifics of those who were questioned. Most of today's polls are absolutely meaningless.

You posit that the workers "would seem to have some legitimate claims..." and then go on to condemn Nadler. You are aware., I'm sure, that this is in his home district and that he is intimately aware of the history of the illnesses and the EPA's attempted coverup? You are aware, I'm sure, that Republican Congressman Fossella joined him in a press release in which they said:
"The agency and this administration are callously turning a blind eye to the victims of 9-11 by offering a flawed, inadequate, scientifically unsound plan to decontaminate the area. Their new plan is not comprehensive and does nothing to protect people from harmful exposure to World Trade Center-related dust and debris - it is a slap in the face to all who live, work and go to school in Lower Manhattan..."
The facts are clear....these folks were abandoned and still are being inadequately cared for. It's indefensible to give a pass to New York and the EPA and Bush. So of course lets condemn Nadler.
As for polls, I notice that righties believe them when they're good and deride them when they're bad.

As for you... your words are that the "extreme righties" are somehow deflecting this issue, but it is Nadler's own words quoted here, that seem to point in that direction. You are so blinded by your ideology that you don't even realize the substance of what was said.
Do the workers deserve adequate care? Yes, but not the subject of this post.
Did Nadler (and you) go way overboard with his comments? Yes, undoubtedly.
Should the 9-11 cleanup have been sent to committee and handled in the traditional self-serving and innefficient dumb-o-crat way? Hell no.
The point here is the repeated self serving political statements by the dhimmies, tearing apart our country in a time of war. We hear you loud and clear: We are our own worst enemies. Well, I don't agree at all. Maybe if you wentto Canada you would feel better.

Nearly every rescue worker dying of lung related diseases from ground zero killed himself thru stupidity. Heroic stupidity yes, but THEY choose the risk, now they are paying the piper. They are not victims here. They all have the best health care in the US available to them. If they die its not because nobody spent money on their care. If they got sick its not because they were not warned of the dangers. They knew the dangers and chose to be there anyway, often without using any of the protective gear offered to them by the city and the feds.

From the MSNBC - Francesca Lyman
Mayor Rudolph Guiliani appeared to believe the EPA's statement and went so far as to stand next to then-EPA administrator Christie Whitman and announce that the air was safe.
When you have someone of the caliber of Mayor Guiliani AND the head of the EPA, saying it, they took that as gospel.
