John Hawkins wrote yesterday about what David Strom called "the largest federal loan in history" that "you never heard of."
Deals like this one help you understand how taxpayers get taken advantage of over and over and over again in Washington. Look at what you have: A company with juice in South Dakota and a Senator's ear in Washington. They get the Senator to get them an outrageous loan that they couldn't possibly get from the private sector. The Senator moves on it, the money rolls in, and then, even if the whole enterprise goes belly-up, who loses?GOP Progress has a link to an e-petition to sign in opposition to the DM&E railroad loan. Not the company. Their keep getting paychecks for another few years, courtesy of the taxpayers. Not the Senator because back home, he'll get credit for bringing home pork and helping to create jobs in South Dakota. Now the taxpayers? We're the big losers here because we'll be out 2.3 billion dollars of our hard earned money. But, how many people will even realize it, much less do anything about it? Few, if any. That's why the taxpayers always get the short end of the stick in DC.
That being said, there is some good news: this loan HAS NOT been approved yet and if the choo-choo to nowhere gets enough attention, it may scuttle the whole thing. So, cross your fingers and hope the word gets out.

Hey trolls! Notice that this is (mostly) about a Republican-sponsored pile of pork. Why do I mention that? Because we are at least trying to fly straight and take out our trash (Foley, et al) whenever possible. And note that this was posted by Lorie who has been accused of having blinders on when it comes to "our" side of the aisle.
Curious when the D's will start to do the same, perhaps starting with "Cold Cash" Jefferson. Then maybe even The Most Powerful Woman in the World.

Whether it's this example or a bridge to nowhere, all attempts to curtail this type of stuff should be applauded and ecouraged by all ,regardless of partisanship. Private interest-driven public financing has become institutionalized in our government and is abused by both parties. Long past for our representatives to start doing more governing and stop as acting as a clearing house for our tax dollars.
As for Jefferson, how about trying and convicting him first, you remember, the American way.

Sorry about the Jefferson bit, groucho... we were just trying to follow the Tom DeLay/Mark Foley precedent of "guilty until proven innocent."
Although in both cases, it strikes me, that the issue of whether the accusation even qualifies as a crime has come up, while Jefferson's alleged deeds are undisputably illegal...

Lorie
Congratulations on a piece that airs some of your side's dirty laundry.
I amend my prior accusation about your being a Demophobe...it appears to more aptly apply to a part-time rather than a full-time basis.
You.ve taken the first step in recovery.

This post is resume' padding that will be self-referenced for years to come as proof against charges of slavish party hackery. Wait! This IS the party line. It's only tiny Republican SD: we'll make it up to them later. Plus, where's SD going to go? 3 votes. (I do happen to agree with the gist of the article, but it's too easy a kill to really applaud. And nothings really happened.) This post is like "chatter" before a Relativist-Republican sudden and acute "moral outrage" Crusade!...Aimed at Dems and heretic Reps, of course.) Plus, ANYTHING beats a Libby Trial Week in Review! PS: Lorie Byrd quoted at antiwar.com! WOW :D http://www.antiwar.com/bandow/?articleid=10446

Maybe everyone should take a moment before taking the taxpayer outrage route. After I did a little checking I found out that many of our very own Minessota congressional delegation helped sponsor this new law. Dayton, Oberstar, and McCollum all sponsored the legislation. This is starting to feel like this is more about Mayo Clinic throwing a tantrum than it is about anything else.
