America Ferrera, star of ABC's Ugly Betty, presented an award at the Spirit Awards yesterday and remarked that America won't be the land of the free until Bush's term is over. Here's the transcript, via NewsBusters:
Zach Braff: "You know America, here's a little interesting tidbit you probably don't know about me. My middle name is Israel. We're both named after countries. "
America Ferrera: "Wow, that is interesting."Braff: "So do you think that you have any traits in common with the country that is your namesake?"
Ferrera: "Well, you know, I mean I guess I'm a free-spirited person and America's supposedly the 'land of the free,' right?"
Braff: "Well, I guess."
Ferrera: "Or at least we will be in 2008." [loud applause] Well how about you, Zach, I mean do you have anything in common with Israel?"
Braff: "Let me see. Well, I'm predominantly Jewish, I'm very hot and all of my neighbors hate me. So yeah." [audience laughter]
She doesn't seem to know that Bush's term ends in January 2009, so she's going to have to suffer being oppressed for a little longer.
I have been a fan of Ugly Betty and even have a season pass for it on my TiVo, but America Ferrera just had to open her mouth and ruin the show for me. Now whenever see her as Betty Suarez, I'm going to think of her ignorant remarks. Nice job, Ms. Ferrera.

Jo nailed it. The real revelation here is that Zach Braff is pretty much like he is on Scrubs... self-denigrating, charming, neurotic, and funny.
As long as he doesn't pass out when he poos in real life, too...

I've seen this show a couple of times, thought it had potential, but didn't get to see it very often. When I heard she'd won some award for it, I figured I'd make more of an effort to watch again.
Now she has to go and open her mouth, assuming that we actually care what she thinks about anything. Oops. Sorry, "Amerika," I think I'll spend that half hour scrubbing my cat's litter box.

For what it's worth, the show "Ugly Betty" is ABC's rip-off of a show that originally appeared on the Spanish network Univision under the title "La Fea Más Bella" (Title Translation: The Ugly More Beautiful). You can watch the ABC rip-off. I'll stick with watching the original version, because it is better, and you don't even have to know Spanish in order to enjoy it (although it helps to have a Hispanic spouse who can translate).

Bah. The Ramones are still one of my favorite bands even though Johnny was a Reagan-nite Republican. The only artist I can think of that I used to really like but grew a distaste for after finding about his political beliefs is Dr. Frank of the Mr. T Experience.. But he let his beliefs sink into his music with the release of a song (that I'm sure you've all heard) called "Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy." When an artist weaves their political beliefs into their art then it becomes tougher to differentiate between the two, and it sucks when disagreeing with one becomes disagreeing with the whole.
But it's not like America's political beliefs are going to play a role in "Ugly Betty" -- especially when she's not writing the scripts. So enjoy it all you want. I still think it's a dumb show, but I think that about most television shows...

Now just what, exactly, are "jack boots"? I remember Nancy Sinatra's "boots made for walkin'" and I was in an army airborne unit and wore "Jump boots". But have NO frickin' clue what a "Jack boot" is. They do sound cool. Can I wear them with sweat pants? Maybe even blouse them?

Well, at least America Ferrera spoke her mind and not what a stupid machine told her to say (unlike our "eloquent" president)! And to those of you who think this country is so free, do some research first. Know how politics and our government work before you say that we ARE free. Do you think journalists get to say all they want to say? What about news? Don't you think they're being censored? BTW, La Fea Mas Bella is the worst soap opera I've watched (and I've watched plenty of them)! There's barely good acting on that show. Besides, it is not funny and is overly exaggerated. We should be telling Televisa to make more high quality soap operas like Alborada, Amor Real, and Ruby instead of crap like La Fea. Last of all, why can't you watch Ugly Betty and like it or dislike it for what it is instead of basing your decisions on what one of the actors in the show said? I guess some people don't understand what constructive criticism and objectivity mean!!
