"They're trying to fool you. They're trying to scare you and they're not telling the truth," a fired-up Obama declared while campaigning in South Dakota. "But it's not going to work. Both Bush and McCain represent the failed foreign policy and fear mongering of the past," Obama said. "I believe the American people are ready to reject this approach and to choose the future."

Whether you folks like it or not, this is THEIR country as much as it is yours. Welcome to a democratic republic, where people are allowed to disagree, even with the government (which is, supposedly, by and for the people).
If they don't like something, well, at least they're saying something about it. The same goes for the counter protesters.
The main problems seems to be that both sides are screaming at one another and not stopping to take the time to actually realize that the other side is human, and indeed, American as well.
Pretty hard to see through stereotypical beliefs, sometimes.
Both sides of the politcal spectrum have their exaggerated rhetoric and overstatements...the left has theirs, as does the right.
Sheehan is no Abe Lincoln, and she is no Martin Luther King. That's for sure. Her ideas tend to be a bit overly simplistic and black and white, IMO.

Well, pal, we don't exactly have a perfect record. The Mexican-American war was as much of a land grab as there ever was.
But the Sheehan types do see the world in a very simplistic way, and they forget that there is way more to the story than they want to admit (or look into).
I do think that our policy of supporting "convenient" dictators in the past has really come back to haunt us, and has damaged our international credibility in some cases. We buddied up to the likes of Somoza, Pinochet, and even Hussein for a time, and for convenience sake. We gotta stop that shit, IMO, if we are to remain credible when it comes to our ideals about freedom, democracy, and liberty.
Part of the question, then, is whether our ideals of freedom and liberty apply only to the USA, or whether we as Americans really do believe that "all men are created equal".
I think you are right in bashing the Sheehan types for being too one-sided though. You're right about that.
I think we have to be aware of our faults and issues, while at the same time keeping our heads on straight.

We are allowed to speak agains the government without being strung up as traitors, metprof. That's a very very very good thing we have going here in the USA.

hey jim:
So America "doesn't have a perfect record" . . . because of the MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR?
Indeed. That one was a pretty blatent land granb if you ask me. We are far from perfect. Do you disagree? The Mexican-American war is one example. Do you think it's irrelevant to the world we live in today? You might want to confer with the people who live in the western US before you answer that, since they are currently living on the lands that we "acquired" during that war.
Are you arguing that 160 events have no bearing upon the nation that we are today? What about 231 year old events (that would be 1776)? No relevance? According to you, Jim, when do historical events become relevant to our "record"? Do they have to be less than 50 years ago, 25, 10? Tell me, oh genius of political science and history, where do we draw the line? What is acceptable, to you, for judging the record of this nation?
Does it upset you when someone is critical of the USA? Why?
Just how completely stupid does one have to be in order to be a leftist?
Hahaha. Great job with the proverbial knee-jerk reaction.
Look man, if you disagree, then disagree, and make your case, if you have one. Do you really have to resort to 6th grade debate tactics, or do you have something more to bring to the discussion than this?
So far, I'm not impressed.

Jim Addison can label me however he sees fit. Is it a mistake? Who knows? I have a hard time with over-arching-stereotypical labels, but that's just me.
In fact, one of my main beefs about our contemporary political discourse is a blind reliance and adherence to stupid political labels like leftist, rightist, liberal, conservative.
What do they all really mean anyway? I have no idea. I call em as I see them, and shy away from associating with pre-made political ideologies.
What I really like is when some blogger like Addison hauls off and calls people stupid without knowing the first thing about them. Great form, excellent tactics.
