It's an interesting idea, putting on a mock trial and taking a look at the evidence to see if man is responsible for global warming. The verdict: man has been found not guilty by a jury of Colorado sixth graders.
Humans don't cause global warming, a jury of sixth graders at Trail Ridge Middle School concluded Thursday after hearing opposing arguments from their peers.
"They're pretty young for this kind of thinking. They did great," paleontology teacher Ken Poppe said after the 40-minute "trial" in his classroom. With Earth's warming accepted as a tenet, pre-teen "lawyers" and "scientists" debated whether humans have caused it.
Eleven jurors listened intently as prosecutors and defendants flashed contradictory graphs tracking global temperatures, carbon dioxide levels, polar ice cap statistics, volcanic activity and sea surface temperatures -- all of which were found Wednesday in the school's computer lab.
"The earth has warmed and cooled over many years. If it's caused by CO2, why haven't the charts shot up?" Poppe's son and lead prosecutor Caleb argued during a rebuttal.
In a climax that sent half the class to its feet and forced the judge to call for order, opponent Monique Nem slapped a contradictory graph onto the prosecution's table.
"We've proven you wrong! The CO2 levels have shot up," she said.
The jury responded more warmly, however, to Caleb Poppe's response: The graphic cited a Hawaiian source; Hawaii has volcanoes; volcanoes emit CO2.
In closing arguments, Alexia Hegy said global temperatures actually decreased in the 1960's, while the global population rose. Humans cannot be at fault, she concluded.
With the final word, defense attorney Sarah Steed countered: "It all comes back to us, the people -- not the sun, not the weather. We need to turn off lights when we don't need them. Bikes can work. The environment can be richer."
Seven of 11 jurors decided humans are not to blame, but everyone agreed classroom debates make for fun learning.
Read the rest of the article. It's really interesting to see how the kids participated in the debate. As a side note, according to the article, only one parent expected the teacher to present Al Gore's movie as indisputable fact.
Newsbusters noted how the mainstream media didn't report on this at all:
Of course, the most important aspect of this event is likely how the media ignored it. Sure, this is just one middle school in a city outside of Boulder, Colorado, with a total population of 83,000.
However, given the huge attention being paid to global warming, and the Congressional testimony of soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore just days prior, isn't it rather safe to assume that if the verdict had gone for the AGW believers, this would have been covered as a puff piece by many media outlets? Can't you envision Meredith Viera and Matt Lauer getting all gooey over how darling these kids were, and how amazingly clever for their age? And doesn't this just show how important and dire this issue is, and how clearly settled the debate if a group of sixth-graders can see the truth that the skeptics can't?
Of course, none of that happened because the outcome didn't fit with the media's view.
So what's the moral of this story? When presented with all the facts and data, even sixth graders come to the conclusion that man does not cause global warming.

Ted, are you saying that sheltered kids in the 6th grade are more likely to have an agenda than scientists who get research money from tax dollars? There is no, and I mean NO real basis to prove global warming is being, has ever been or will ever be caused by human beings. I don't suppose anyone has pointed out that if global warming is a reality, vast portions of the earth will become cultivatable land. Siberia, northern Canada, and Greenland come to mind. Real science says the oceans may rise as much as 18 inches. Sounds like a real disaster to me. But Ted, be sure to buy your carbon credits from algore. There is no, and I mean NO real basis to prove global warming is being, has ever been or will ever be caused by human beings.
Then I am sure you will have ample evidence to back up your assertions. I'd love to see your evidence.
For whatever it may be worth, the scientific community that supports the study of global warming haven't officially said that they are 100% certain of their findings, however it is very very likely that man made pollution will contribute to the overall temperature change world wide.
Whereas the global warming skeptics are absolutely 100% certain that they are right down the line. There is no room for considering all the facts, rather the skeptics decide to personally attack people like Al Gore, rather than his message or his movie, which once again renders your arguement invalid.
If Michael Crichton and a class of sixth graders, led by a teacher who is a known creationist who penned a book called 'Reclaiming Science from Darwinism: A Clear Understanding of Creation, Evolution, and Intelligent Design' are your experts, then I really pity your assertions.

While I think these six graders are no more valid than the armies of six graders the left trots out when the mock trials go their way, I have to say one thing:
Kudos to these kids!
They aren't letting the fear get to them.
When I was my a kid, my life was a misery of leftist terror, convinced at any moment that the end of the world was coming from the Evil Darth Reagan's unprovoked nuclear attacks on the rest of the world.
I was terrified daily that at any moment my family could suddenly be on the street, homeless-- because 'it could happen to anyone.'
In second grade our teacher had us write an essay about the next ice age... I had nightmares for a week about a gigantic glacier slowly building up to my house.
So kudos to these kids... the left exists in a state of attempting to destroy childhood-- with fear, with abortion, with limits on play, teasing, and basic fun-- and these kids are having none of it.

It is also not well publicized that 6th graders in Atlanta's Second District recently held a debate over dark matter as a feasible explanation for the observed rotational velocities of galaxies. The jury decided that the explanation was not warranted (6-3) and that the Modified Newtonian Dynamics theory made more sense to them, especially the modification to Poisson's equation. The true turning point came over the debate of "invisible dwarf galaxies" when Frankie Lawrentz for the defense remarked, "The only people discovering 'invisible dwarf galaxies' are potheads, not scientists!" The prosecution never recovered from this terrific rebuttal that made their whole argument seem rather silly.
Take that, Neal Dalal and Stelios Kazantzidis. How does it feel to have your theories proven wrong by 6th graders? The outcome of this debate could clearly change the course of scientific thought on dark matter. Why is this important information being suppressed?

When the sun sets, the temperature drops from 65 below zero to 200 degrees below zero.
