Today on The View Barbara Walters held up a copy of the New York Post and noted that the bigger part of the front page was the first picture of Larry Birkhead and DannieLynn, with a headline and picture of the Va Tech murderer on the bottom getting second billing. Here was Rosie O'Donnell's reaction:
Rosie:...Let's just say this, the New York Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who owns the Fox News channel. So, if you want to be distracted by what's really happening in Washington, pick up the Post or watch Fox News because they have an agenda to make you not really interested in the real things in this country, but rather Dannie Lynn.Walters: But Fox News, but Fox News has done all around the clock -- I have listened to that too and they have done stories all around the clock on this --
Rosie: They are slanted and right biased in my opinion
Walters: Well other programs are slanted too, in their own way. We are slanted in another way. But I just think for this ---
Rosie: We are not a news show though, Barbara. This is a news network. You turn on Fox News and you hear right wing propaganda. That is not news. There's no way that that's news.
Behar: They say they're fair and balanced.
Rosie: Well they're lying, if you ask me.
(Audience applause)
Aisha Tyler (guest host): Well, I just want to say I mean, I actually think this is really emblematic of what's going on in this country right now, there's so much negative news out there that people are obsessed with stuff that means nothing. I mean I turned on CNN during the whole Anna Nicole Smith thing and it was like the Anna Nicole Smith channel. It was like you forgot we were at war.
Walters: And it's not just one network. It was everywhere.
Aisha Tyler: No, it's all.
Behar: It's everywhere.
It went on a little bit longer, morphing into a discussion about Don Imus, but that was all I could take before my head started hurting. On the Fox News is slanted and that is not news topic -- watch Keith Olbermann for about ten minutes. (Really, watch him, if just five of you do it will increase his ratings dramatically. Okay, I exaggerated there -- a bit.) What Keith Olbermann does on MSNBC is not news, but it is dressed up like news. It is moonbattery at it's battiest. Watch ABC's global warming "reporting." If that is not propaganda, then nothing is. For another thousand or so examples of propaganda on networks other than Fox News, just read a few days worth of Newsbusters.
As for Rosie's claim that The View is not a news show -- she's right, it isn't classified as a news show, but they do disseminate news to a rather large audience, whether they want to acknowledge it or not. I wrote a bit on that recently. I believe that in many ways the news that reaches viewers when they are not tuning into a news show has a greater impact than news they get when they are conscious that news is being delivered.

Of course, that FACT just doesnt dovetail in with Rosie's opinionated ugliness, so she forgets to mention it. Like so many of her ilk, she wants to be unchallenged on everything she says, yet, is compelled to challenge everything out ther that doest suit her agenda.

You use the old strawman argument by citing Obermann. Obermann, O'Reilly, Matthew's, Hannity, Greta, Grace, Beck et al are to news as comic books are to literature. They all have agendas, and that's what their shows are about.
Fox News is slanted. So are all the networks. Why you folks from the right just won't admit that is a mystery to me. If more news stations are "liberal" than others it's obviously because people watch them and advertisers pay for it.
All that said, Rosie is still a jackass.

You know, the funny thing is that everything that is presented on the MSM shows is also presented on FOX news. It's just that FOX also presents the other side or tells the whole story instead of just a small fraction of it (as the MSM often does).
When the right opinion and left opinion are presented side by side, the right almost always seems the more intelligent and thoughtful opinion.
I won't argue the FOX is right-baised, though. Just that they present the left's side as much as the right side. Anytime anyone does that, they'll appear right-biased.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Because the MSM is so overwhelmingly available and abundant, you can't help but be exposed to it on a daily basis. But if that is ALL that you are exposed to then you only know HALF the story, and many times a false depiction of the news. However, if you watch Fox, then you get both sides of the story. THAT is why the left hates them. They're not use to BOTH sides.

Righties here, even on this thread, are openly admitting it's a conservative news channel, and have no problem with the 'Fair and Balanced' motto. Maybe they mean they are balancing out of the liberal media out there, but that certaintly is a stretch, or spin, on the statement. If Fox would just own up to being a right wing news machine I wouldn't have so much of a problem with it. 24 hour TV news sucks anyway. 8 hours of coverage on an event and really, you will get 15 minutes of real information. Read many different sources and make your own intelligent opinion and you'll be better off than watching one channel with a liberal or conservative agenda. I think you are conflating fair and balanced with factual and true. Fox News is indeed fair and balanced in that they allow a mostly equal time between liberal and conservative views.
The problem for many Liberals is not whether Fox News is fair and balanced, but that it leans more to the conservative side, and most importantly, it also exposes Liberals in, let's say, less than accurate actions and statements. That is fair and balanced, as well as being factual and true.

People seem to forget that until the failure of the FIRST surge offensive at about this time last year (I know, memory hole), FOX pretty consistantly disseminated an alternate reality of impending victory. Across the board, show to show. I think it was an election years stunt gone awry. It may have been cardboard.
I remember "evidence" presented being: 20 helos taking off at the same time. Usually the same stock video. It was blogged here. I remember the other networks downplaying the matter. FOX shilled for it.
Then the "treasure trove" of documents linking Saddaam to Al Qaeda. FOX and the bloggers didn't know EXACTLY what they would say (translation would take time) but somehow knew enough to assure America that they would reinforce W's position politically (same election year).
Frankly, I expected clever forgeries, but they never updated the story at all (memory hole?).
But the lamest attempt at FOX agit-prop was the Plame affair. FOX was foremost in insisting that Plame's EMPLOYERS had a right to use her as the ONLY way to discredit her husband, despite OFFICIAL channels to overturn his assessment (hint: another mission to Niger!!). But since she was stabbed in the back, nobody wished to be seen to have any motive at all. A sure sign of a rat!
FOX viewers were given the full neocon snowjob and found themselves gape-mouthed when the rat was somehow found guilty 4 ways. MSNBC's David Shuster wasn't suprised because he had no ulterior allegiance, and gave the news straight.
BTW: Libby's legal witness, Victoria Toensing has been hired by fellow neocon "genius" Paul "Holes" Wolfowitz. (I predict FOX shills for the Wolf! 20 cyber-bucks.)

Can anyone ever forget CNN's coverup of Saddam's offenses?
Just after Baghdad fell in early 2003, CNN ran an astonishing confession on the New York Times's op-ed page admitting that it had known, but kept secret, some "awful things" about the regime of Saddam Hussein over the years. "Each time I visited, I became more distressed by what I saw and heard--awful things that could not be reported because doing so would have jeopardized the lives of Iraqis, particularly those on our Baghdad staff," wrote Eason Jordan, CNN's chief news executive. "I came to know several Iraqi officials well enough that they confided in me that Saddam Hussein was a maniac who had to be removed." The piece went into some gruesome detail of atrocities CNN "could not report," for fear of reprisal from the dictator. "I felt awful having these stories bottled up inside me," he confessed.
Then why didn't CNN leave Iraq and alert the rest of the world about these "gut-wrenching tales" and atrocities?
ahh, I guess they wanted to protect the lib agenda??

Suh,
Ive watched em all. The 3 main networks are so distorted to the left its a joke. They also have limited opportunity to present multiple guests since there is only so much they can editorialize in 30 minutes. Still, these 3 have been proven liars since back when Hall of Fame lib liar Cronkite was lying about the Tet Offensive.
The cable networks have 12+ hrs a day to do their thing.
Virtually every time I watch Fox, they have a D and an R view, maybe not always for each segment, but the overall tone of the show is a view from each side of the aisle. Fox probably does a better job of broadcasting lib points of view to people that the other 2 cable news outlets, since so few watch them.
I cant tolerate CNN much, but seldom see them make the effort to equally offer an R view as Fox does a D view. MSNBC is also a joke, with people like Matthews and the windbag from ESPN who cant decide if he is funny or serious, so he is neither.
Matthews was the speechwriter for inarguably the least effective president of the last half century, so yeah, he is about as balanced as Jimmy Carter is an israeli supporter.

Fox was the first of its kind to offer BOTH views, which is why 1. They are crushing the competition, and 2. the reason the libs are in an uproar, as they have had the ability to control to an extent what gets reported, American Tass if you will. Libbies want to control what you say, what you think, what you learn, etc etc. How often has a libbie speaker on a college campus been shouted down or attacked by the republican club?

Blechhht!
Fifty-seven percent of Special Report 's one-on-one guests during the period studied were ideological conservatives, 12 percent were centrists and 11 percent were progressives.
...and the list goes on and on.
Nice try Lee. I followed your link. Seems your oracle of fairness, fair.org, was founded by Jeff Cohen. And he, according to his site, "founded FAIR in 1986. He served as the group's executive director for a number of years, and later on its board of directors. Upon taking a full time job with MSNBC in May 2002, Cohen stepped down from FAIR's board.
At MSNBC, Cohen was a senior producer on Donahue and an on-air commentator. Over the years, he has been a frequent guest on national TV and radio, including Today, Larry King Live, Donahue, C-SPAN and NPR. Formerly, he was a regular panelist on Fox News Channel's News Watch. He has served as the co-host of CNN's Crossfire.
So you pick a former senior producer on Donahue as the arbiter of Fox News fairness. Classic. Not clever.
Although, it is nice that Fox allowed him to serve as panelist, which tends to prove the point I was making.

FOX News is as far right as the nearest center competitor is to the left.
And that's for the News. Watching a news segment on FOX is pretty indistinguishable from other news services.
Commentary is a different matter. I believe that FOX News commentary and opinion shows, while making a point to include voices from the left, clearly state opinions to the right. There's a market for that. Half the country, in fact.
I've heard people claim that FOX chooses ineffective "left" voices so it's really not as fair as it seems.
Well... look at the View. How many ladies? One token "conservative" for the others to gang up on.
And I don't know how anyone could claim that they found someone who could hold her own.
From the sounds of it, not even Barbara or any of the others on the left side can stand up to Rosie. If you notice, the others as quoted in the transcript bit up there, seem to be *gently* disagreeing. And that's after Rosie interrupted Barbara to explain "in small words" why she was wrong.

Only a lier or fool could NOT understand and admit that the "commentary" shows on Fox News are 100% Right Wing Propoganda.
They are designed to move the talking points of a political party forward.
To dismiss that as anything other than a fact is to lie or be a fool.
CNN in no way spreads Democratic talking points on it's "commentary shows" in the focused and endless way Fox News spins for the Republican Party.
MSNBC has a number of Conservative (Tucker Carlson and Chris Matthews) commentary shows to balance the left leaning Olberman.
Fox has NO liberal voice - and Colmes does not count. He is a baffoon and no liberal I know agrees with his stereotypical positions.
Put Rosie on Fox and I would call it fair and balance. Instead they put ditto head Elizabeth on their morning chat show.
Rosie is right. 100%
She actually said on the view that she was NOT going speak about the gun control issue.
Did those of you who trust Fox News see them report that.
NO - because they were upset that she called them on being propoganda.
So they manipulated you into thinking Rosie went on a rant about guns. She didnt.
They dug up old clips to attack her when she did not give them new material to use against her.
It was propoganda on the air last night about Rosie.
