Publishing Facts about Islam is Labeled Harassment

On April 11, 2007, Tufts University's conservative newspaper, The Primary Source, responded to the university's Islamic Awareness Week that tried to put push a rosy picture of Islam by publishing a one page special section that addressed the religion's intolerance and barbarism:

Islam

Arabic Translation: Submission

In the Spirit of Islamic Awareness Week, the SOURCE presents an itinerary to supplement the educational experience.

MONDAY: "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them." - The Koran, Sura 8:12

Author Salman Rushdie needed to go into hiding after Iran's Ayatollah Khomeni declared a fatwa calling for his death for writing The Satanic Verses, which was declared "blasphemous against Islam."

TUESDAY: Slavery was an integral part of Islamic culture. Since the 7th century, 14 million African slaves were sold to Muslims compared to 10 or 11 million sold to the entire Western Hemisphere. As recently as 1878, 25,000 slaves were sold annually in Mecca and Medina. (National Review 2002)

The seven nations in the world that punish homosexuality with death all have fundamentalist Muslim governments.

WEDNESDAY: In Saudi Arabia, women make up 5% of the workforce, the smallest percentage of any nation worldwide. They are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle or go outside without proper covering of their body. (Country Reports on Human Rights Practices 2001)

Most historians agree that Muhammed's second wife Aisha was 9 years old when their marriage was consummated.

THURSDAY: "Not equal are those believers who sit and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit. Unto all Hath Allah promised good: But those who strive and fight Hath He distinguished above those who sit by a special reward." - The Koran, Sura 4:95

The Islamist guerrillas in Iraq are not only killing American soldiers fighting for freedom. They are also responsible for the vast majority of civilian casualties.

FRIDAY: Ibn Al-Ghazzali, the famous Islamic theologian, said, "The most satisfying and final word on the matter is that marriage is form of slavery. The woman is man's slave and her duty therefore is absolute obedience to the husband in all that he asks of her person."

Mohamed Hadfi, 31, tore out his 23-year-old wife Samira Bari's eyes in their apartment in the southern French city of Nimes in July 2003 following a heated argument about her refusal to have sex with him. (Herald Sun)

If you are a peaceful Muslim who can explain or justify this astonishingly intolerant and inhuman behavior, we'd really like to hear from you! Please send all letters to [email protected]

In response to this piece, the Tufts University Committee on Student Life condemned the newspaper by calling the the piece harassment of Tuft's Muslim students, in spite of the fact that the information published was factual. Here's a portion of the committees' decision:

[T]he MSA proved, by a preponderance of the evidence, that The Primary Source harassed Muslim students at Tufts, and created a hostile environment for them by publishing "Islam-Arabic Translation: Submission." The Committee found that the MSA established that the commentary at issue targeted members of the Tufts Muslim community for harassment and embarrassment, and that Muslim students felt psychologically intimidated by the piece....

[A]lthough Tufts students should feel free to engage in speech that others might find offensive and even hurtful, Tufts University's non-discrimination policy embodies important community standards of behavior that Tufts, as a private institution, has an obligation to uphold. Our campus should be a place where students feel safe, respected, and valued. Freedom of speech should not be an unfettered license to violate the rights of other members of the community, without recourse.

Eugene Volokh has great analysis:

Lovely: Harsh criticism of Islam doesn't -- in the Committee's view -- "promot[e] political or social discourse." Rather, it is an "unreasonable attack[]" (and it's up to the Committee to decide which attacks on religions are reasonable and which aren't).

What's more, this "unreasonable" speech violates the "rights of other members of the community." What are those rights? Apparently the right "to exist on campus without being subjected to unreasonable attacks based on their race or religion" (including attacks on the religion generally, even those that don't give any student names in particular). And apparently the right to be free of "attitudes or opinions that are expressed verbally or in writing" that "create[] a hostile environment" for students "on the basis of race, religion, gender identity/expression, ethnic or national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, or genetics."

In this case, the punishment for the speech is a ban on one newspaper's ability to publish anonymous speech -- while other newspapers that express favored views remain free to shield their contributors from social ostracism and other retaliation through anonymity. It requests "that student governance consider the behavior of student groups," which is to say the viewpoints those groups express, "in future decisions concerning recognition and funding."

But more importantly, the ruling finds that the speech violated general campus rules that make such speech "unacceptable at Tufts" and require "prompt and decisive action." Though it looks like no individual students are being disciplined in this instance, if the Tufts Administration accepts the ruling, it will send a clear message that students who express "attitudes or opinions" like this will be seen as violating campus anti-harassment rules, and will be subjected to "prompt and decisive action," which campus rules say may involve "the disciplinary process," against individual students as well as against organizations. After this decision, what should Tufts students feel free to say in criticizing religions, or in criticizing affirmative action?

Tufts' response to TPS's piece by calling it harassment is ridiculous, not to mention completely overboard; I have to wonder: does the word Tufts mean "submission" in Arabic, too?

The real problem is the parents who pay thousands of dollars per year to get their children out of the house. Education is not a consideration, just get your drug addled a** out of my house. Most of those attending these failed colleges are too retarded or drug induced brain dead to make it in a real school so they are easy to brainwash, even to the point they become democrats (traitors) and really think they are the Elite of the world. Soon the world will fall on them and they will be the 'new slaves' being sold by they're masters in Islam, the religion of murder. Isn't it clear yet that the Koran was written by a murdering war lord, not as a religion, but as a means to control entire populations.

Well, Tufts is a private school, which gives it a bit more leeway in such things than a public school.

That said, a few things occur to me:

1) Calling this "harassment" may be accurate, but punishing the paper for it is clealry over the line. Freedom of speech, of course, can't be limited to favored viewpoints.

2) The supposed "right" not to be offended is really quite ineffective; it promotes walking on eggshells as people try to avoid ridiculous offenses, builds resentment among those not of the 'favored" classes, and leaves intact underlying currents of bigotry.

3) Those who bring these sorts of "I feel harassed" actions really have no sense of political theater. A budding young demagogue could have staged a nice little event by demanding apologies and leading a group down to the paper's offices for a sit-in.

4) Or, better yet, a smart opponent for this paper could have invited the paper's student publishers to a "focum" on the issue, then throw out a few easily countered bits about Islam, then see if they could goad the publishers into full-blown, naked bigotry. That's one particular dope I'd love to see roped.

5) The paper's really kind of stupid. If they want to review 1,500 or so years of Muslim history, they're really opening Christianity up to a criticism of its 2,000 or so years.

6) Finally, the word "discretion" seems to be missing from this entire discussion. If I were that paper's publisher, I probably wouldn't have published something like that. Not because I was afraid of backlash, but because I really don't think it contained any value.

I think the left is thinking Socialism (or communism) and Islam can co-exist.

1) Those evil Christians resisted Communism. Pope John Paul II even helped hasten its demise in Europe by encouraging Poland. They feel they underestimated it.

2) They believe religion is meant to pacify the unwashed masses, so they want their own version.

3) Islam is de-centralized and loosely organized so there isn't as strong centralized rival for authority as other religions

4) For the same reason as above Imams could easily be intimidated or co-opted by the State to be puppets.

I see a merger in the not so distant future, imho.

And are generally responsible for a lot of loathesome malignment about the Catholic Church and otherwise, Christianity.

Just saying, it'd be a great place to start to begin clearing things up a bit if we could organize a few shared goals and interests and otherwise unite on some common ground instead of reading ongoing malignments about Christian beliefs such as rejection of homosexuality and abortion ("gay marriage" and abortion, both of which will, I believe, continue to remain profoundly rejected by most Christians, certainly by Catholics). There's a lot of hate out there from many social Jews about those of us who are Christian and who reject these Liberal desires.

I remain a supporter of Israel, but sometimes the negation of my Catholic beliefs by many Jews makes it difficult.

Islamic Conference Condemns Rejection of Islam

Islamabad, May 18 (Prensa Latina) The Organization of the Islamic Conference, grouping foreign ministers from 57 countries meeting Thursday in Pakistan, condemned the rejection fomented against Islam.

In a joint declaration, the 57 countries rejected the discrimination against believers in this religion and insisted on ending stereotypes imposed on Muslims.

The document also refers to the principal military and diplomatic conflicts of the member countries, among them Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Iran and the Kashmir region, shared between India and Pakistan.

Participants in this conference reiterated their support to the establishment of a Free State in Palestine and demanded the return of the refugees. Regarding Iraq, they pointed out the need to restore peace and withdraw the foreign occupation troops.

The "Islamabad Declaration" highlighted that states are responsible for protecting the rights of Muslim people in the countries where they are a minority, and in a spirit of mutual respect between civilizations, urged dialogue and rejection of terrorism and linking it to any religion, theology or culture.

I got news for you voting Republican hasn't worked out that well for us either. Or you. It's just that no one is paying attention and everyone is so intent on saying it's the Dems only. IT IS NOT.

I MADE people vote for GWB last time, people with dual citizenship in Israel. LOTS OF THEM.

I am sure they are thrilled with me at this moment.

The "republicans" are not the answer to our problems, they are less a cause of our problems than the dhimmicrats but I assure you they are ALL compromised on some level by the overwhelming dollars the Arabs have.

See the 'Financial Jihad" and other posts on the Bush Admin at my blog.

Voting R doesnt seem to do shit but SLOW THE PROCESS DOWN A BIT.

There is no such thing as a right to not be offended by someone speaking the truth. Truth is the final arbiter. If anyone claims that the truth is harassment, then the appropriate response is, "tough." File your "protest" with reality.

The Koran tells Muslims to convert the world to Islam, and those who are not converted shall die. If Freedom of Speech protects this, then "non-believers" can also preach the killing of all Muslims. Freedom of Speech goes both ways.
