Wyoming Senator Craig Thomas Dies from Leukemia

From the AP:

Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas, a three-term conservative Republican who stayed clear of the Washington limelight and political catfights, died Monday. He was 74.

The senator's family issued a statement saying he died Monday evening at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. He had been receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Just before the 2006 election, Thomas was hospitalized with pneumonia and had to cancel his last campaign stops. He nonetheless won with 70 percent of the vote, monitoring the election from his hospital bed.

Two days after the election, Thomas announced that he had just been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

What a shame. If you're so inclined, say a prayer for Senator Thomas' family.

Hey Sean -- it would be great if you could put politics aside and just consider him as a fellow human being. Have you no shame?

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Senator's family and friends.

He was never one to grab the headlines, but he was a steadfast voice and vote for conservative principles on the floor of the Senate. Craig Thomas, R.I.P. You will be missed.

Wyoming has the oddest succession law of any state: the Governor (a Democrat now) chooses the candidate to serve until the next election from three nominees of the party of the departed Senator. So, the Republicans will keep his seat. In most other states, the Governor has a free hand to appoint an interim Senator.

Actually, it the only succession law that makes sense as far as keeping with the peoples wishes. All states should have this provision.

My apologies to Sean above. I didn't have the right to jump on you in such an accusatory manor. It was late, and I had no business getting offended so easily. Sorry.

Wyoming's succession law seems pretty reasonable to me. More states should adopt this type of thing.

I agree with BillyBob in that more states should do this. If the people voted in a conservative, then another conservative should take his place if he is no longer able to perform his duties. That should apply no matter the party.
