Fred Thompson Leads in North Carolina

Fred Thompson's possible run for the presidency has got to be one of the best managed, most effective campaigns I think I've ever seen. The man has remained on the periphery of the GOP Primary for a while but has managed to dominate the discussion. Now, according to a recently released poll by Public Policy Polling located in Raleigh, Fred leads the pack of GOP candidates in North Carolina:

In a surprising development, a Republican presidential candidate who hasn't even officially announced his candidacy yet is leading polls of Republican voters in North Carolina.

If a vote were held today for the Republican primary, former US Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee would be leading the way among all candidates in the party, says Public Policy Polling which is located in Raleigh.

According to the report, Thompson's support jumped from 25% of likely Republican voters in May to 37% in this month's poll, while Rudy Giuliani's support fell to 25%.

The poll said that John McCain and Mitt Romney both were tied with 14%.

Nine percent of Republicans said they supported a candidate other than the four mentioned and 1% said they were undecided.

His campaign is starting to pick up steam in other states. Fred is planning stops in New Hampshire and South Carolina at the end of June. And according to a Washington Post blog, Fred may very well head over to Iowa and participate in the Straw Poll.

Lorie adds: Bob Owens included the fact that John Edwards is leading among Democrats in North Carolina.

In the same poll, John Edwards (30-percent) was leading the Democratic herd ahead of Hillary Clinton (26-percent) and Barack Obama (22-percent), suggesting that the recreational use of crystal meth is far more widespread in North Carolina than was previously believed.
Bob also takes a look at Edwards six point plan to address terrorism.

it makes sense for Fred not to be in that list quite yet, but instead to wait for the numbers to get whittled down. he can afford to do that because he already has name recognition and a following.

and to think he's hiding from the debates is just stupid. you don't think that once he's officially announced that he won't be participating in those debates? there is more than enough time to get more information about his views, opinions, and plans. and to see how he performs. i can tell you now, that if he bombs at that point he will be out, no matter when he got in.

A long interview on the most watched cable network the night of the last Rep debate.

Fred Thompson's speech before the Council for National Policy last month.

Fred Thompson's speech at the RPV Gala broadcast by C-SPAN.

Fred Thompson speech at the Lincoln Club last month.

All these and more have been covered by the media.

Thompson is certainly great and all that BUT for the GOP to nominate him (for instance against Hillary) would be a disaster. Here's the simple reason why. Romney and/or Guiliani would beat Hillary in all the states that Thompson would, but Romney and/or Guiliani would put additional states in play for GOP wins. In essence, of the three, the GOP would win the presidency against Hillary with Romney and/or Guiliani, but most definitely would lose the presidency with Thompson.

So, Thompson may be popular with the GOP, but he doesn't pick up anything but actually, disastrously, would cause the GOP to lose the Presidency to Hillary in '08.

Also important to mention. USA Today tried to hurt Thompson by saying Dr. Dobson said that Thompson was not Christian. This was the media again distorting and trying to hurt conservatives.

Dr. Dobson then called Glenn Beck and was very frustrated that he was being misrepresented. He said that he liked Thompson and very well could support him. What Dr. Dobson basically said was that:
1) Presidential elections are close
2) as far as Dr. Dobson knows, Fred Thompson has not publically made known his faith
3) Dr. Dobson had recommended that if Thompson is a Christian, that it would help him to make that known.

(Dr. Dobson was actually trying to help Thompson).

By the way, I have concluded that Lee is concerned about a Thompson candidacy.

Brian, it's difficult to respond to you because you have a knack for turning the discussion into anything but the original point. So this is the last thing I'll say to you about the matter.

This is a conservative (or at least an Independent) blog. Let's just say it's NOT a liberal blog.

The discussion is about a conservative candidate (or he's likely to be)

Most of us are conservatives (or at least Independents)

It's an opportunity to share ideas and information about that candidate.

But no, we have to spend time responding to Lee's petty, ill informed crap and wild accusations. If we don't we'll get accusations of being afraid to debate the "truth" with him.

Petty:

So when is Fred going to come out of his cave and face the American people?

My God, he's all over the television and radio airwaves and giving speeches.

Ill informed:

"What is he afraid of? Is he so sick that he can't stand the rigors of a campaign?

His cancer is in remission and highly treatable.

Wild accusation:

Why is he ducking all of the debates?

He can't be in the debates because he is not yet an official candidate. Sorry he's not following Lee's playbook on when it's acceptable to enter the race.

Wild accusation:

The excuse that he still hasn't decided is nothing more than a lie."

This doesn't even deserve a response, because it's even more shrill and irrational.

I like how you run off to link other threads where conservatives have the gall to share an opinion about liberal politicians, but it's not proof of hypocrisy. Hypocrisy would be Wizbang! commenters running over to Wizbangblue to drop turds all over their post about their candidates. But I've learned not to expect much more from you.
