Broward County Democrats Think Politics is More Important than Saving Lives

Should the Broward county Democrats follow through on their plan, it will be highly irresponsible. Currently Broward county has a contract with WIOD AM 610 to broadcast the county's emergency hurricane information. The county chose this station because emergency planners said its signal strength is stronger than other stations, and it has so many sister stations that it can get important hurricane information to the largest number of people. Now the Broward county Commissioners, all Democrats, want to cancel the contract with WIOD because it airs the Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity shows:

Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want to support a station that's out of step with area politics. Ritter, a Democratic stalwart in the state Legislature before being elected to county office, cited talk shows hosted by Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and WIOD's partnership with Fox News.

"They have every right to speak, but we don't have to do business with them," she said.

Limbaugh has long been a fixture on WIOD, but no county official raised an issue about him or the other shows when the deal was approved for the first time a year ago.

The deal with WIOD would ensure that news conferences are broadcast start to finish live from the county Emergency Operations Center in Plantation. Emergency managers became concerned during hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 that radio and television stations preempted their announcements in favor of news out of Miami.

[...]

Ken Charles, WIOD's director of AM programming, said the station's talk show lineup has no relationship with its news coverage and that the county should focus on the benefits of teaming with the station.

"It's a shame that people would let politics get in the way of saving lives in a hurricane," Charles said.

The contract with WIOD was on the verge of being rejected when commissioners instead delayed a decision until next week. They told their communications staff they want more information on why WIOD was recommended and what their options are.

Ritter's concerns were echoed by Commissioners Ken Keechl, a former president of the Dolphins gay Democratic club, and Suzanne Gunzburger, who served on the vote-tallying board that recounted the 2000 presidential election.

But Commissioner John Rodstrom, a one-time young Republican leader who later became a Democrat, said the county should not politicize emergency management.

"If we are going to start censoring what people write in the paper or speak on the radio or television, that's a slippery slope," Rodstrom said. "This is necessary. It's something we need to do for emergency response."

This is so irresponsible, it's shocking. These Democrats would rather issue this contract to a radio station that's sympathetic to their politics even though doing so would limit the number of people who have access to the county's emergency information. Can't these people get above politics for anything? What's next, making access to county government services contingent upon political affiliation?

And what I've noticed more than anything else, is that amazing as it seems, Democrats *approve*.

It really is more important to make a stand for Truth, Justice, and the American Way, than let any of those on the opposite side have any whiff of legitimacy by, in this case, giving a contract for emergency broadcasting to a station without considering political affiliation.

Sure, the commissioners are now backpedaling to see if there was a *reason* to chose this station over the others, but not before they spouted their foolishness in public and gotten some of their own back-lash, or at least an idea that this might not be the political slam-dunk they expected.

"Uh, wait a minute oyster if media is all about the "free market" then according to you there is no market for conservatives in the Mainstream media. After all, if 99% of the MSM is liberal it must be because the free market has rejected conservativism, right?

You said so yourself right? Can't have it both ways."

No, that's not what I said. And there seems to be a stronger market for conservatives in the media if you'll simply look at ratings and advertising revenues for FOX over the rest. Don't put words in my mouth after you have brought up an "if".

MikeSC:

He also misses the rather constant down trend in the audience for the MSM. Newspapers are losing circulation. TV News ratings are embarrassing (Couric has, shockingly, been an epic dud).

OBVIOUSLY, the market has spoken out against the liberal MSM.

No, Meyers, it's not right ... (Below threshold)
kim:

No, Meyers, it's not right because Clinton did it, it's right because the Constitution gives the President the power to organize his own Justice Department. In fact, he must do so in order to carry out his oath to enforce the laws.

But I understand strawmen are easy to set up. That's fundamentally what Schumer has set up with the US Attorney business. But it is legislative interference in the workings of the executive branch. Go pound sand, or pull taffy, as Snow would have it.

This is one of the reasons the Dems look so stupid in Congress. It's obvious that in firing all 93 US Attorneys, Clinton was 'burning down the house'. And it's just as obvious that replacing 10 percent of them is 'trimming the grass' This is precisely the sort of bind the Dems get themselves into with BDS.

Sure, it's obvious what a scoundrel Bush is when you suffer from BDS. But the bulk of the people out there are sensing what the Anchoress had up the other day. There is a hell of a lot that has gone right in the last 6 years, and the Dems don't display the sort of moxie to keep that string alive.

Real people, in the real world, aren't offended when the boss winnows out the bottom 10% of the workforce. They do get offended when the union won't let the boss get rid of their dangerous co-workers.

Kim, you are throwing pearls before swine.

A recent post today is about democrat Anjolina Jolie wanted to ban Fox News from the red carpet. The left have NO respect for differing views. They scream tolerance and diversity, but it is very hollow. ww

Cousin Dave:

So I'm just loving seeing all the lefty moonbats doing all the name-calling on this thread. Exhibit A. I see not one of you has made a serious attempt to rebut my First Amendment argument. Ergo, I assume you do not have a rebuttal. But wait a minute! "We're lefties; our word is law!" That is your rebuttal, isn't it?

Lefties:

I see not one of you has made a serious attempt to rebut my First Amendment argument.

There is no first amendment argument here, and you didn't make one. You clearly don't understand the amendment, as it has nothing to do with granting government contracts.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

How does not contracting a radio station to air news conferences abridge freedom of the press? The radio station is free to broadcast them if it wants to, but the county doesn't have to pay them for it. And there is also no evidence that there is a bidding process here at all, btw.

Cousin Dave's school of argumentation:

1) Make spurious and irrelevant half-argument
2) Get ignored
3) Assume that since no one has deigned to respond to your stupidity, you are correct
4) Celebrate; with a bonus for deriding your "opponents" for name-calling while calling them names in the very same sentence
5) Rinse and repeat

Oh, they're very tolerant and diverse, as long as you agree with them.
