Don Herbert, star of the long-running "Mr. Wizard" television show which showed children the fun in science, and the science in ordinary things, died yesterday, according to CNN:
Don Herbert, who as television's "Mr. Wizard" introduced generations of young viewers to the joys of science, died Tuesday. He was 89.
Herbert, who had bone cancer, died at his suburban Bell Canyon home, said his son-in-law, Tom Nikosey."He really taught kids how to use the thinking skills of a scientist," said former colleague Steve Jacobs. He worked with Herbert on a 1980s show that echoed the original 1950s "Watch Mr. Wizard" series, which became a fond baby boomer memory.

I remember watching his show on Saturday mornings as a kid. He was always interesting and entertaining without being pretentious in the least. We always need more people who can instill the love of learning in young kids, but yesterday we lost one of the great ones.

I spent many hours watching his show that sparked an interest in science that remains with me today.

I only saw the "real" Mr. Wizard a few times, but his legacy will always linger on in my memory, thanks to five little words:
"We're gonna need another Timmy."
