Free Speech for Democrats Only

Update: I apologize for posting the story below which Kim already posted yesterday. (I have the kids at home now that school is out and I thought I had read all the Wizbang posts, but somehow missed that one.)

Hugh Hewitt writes about those in Broward County trying to silence Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

Radio station WIOD, AM 610, has been the official channel for emergency information from Broward County government for the past year. The County Commission, all Democrats, balked at renewing the deal Tuesday, unable to stomach the station also being home to [Rush] Limbaugh's talk show. ... And so we reach the inevitable end of the left's campaign against the First Amendment. The Democrats in Broward County have officially declared themselves as the anti-free speech party. Commissioner Ritter is to be applauded for her candor, for declaring openly what elected Democrats across the country mutter quietly to themselves: "Rush, Sean and the rest must be silenced!"

I have heard of brass-knuckled politics before, but never anything on the order of denying your political opponents news of approaching hurricanes.

When Katrina struck, some wild-eyed lefties accused President Bush of denying relief efforts to New Orleans because the city was predominantly African-American.

Now we have actual proof of Democrats wanting to keep conservatives in the dark about approaching storms.

There's a lot of debunking that goes on here at Wizbang, Jim,but I think this is a new ploy on Lorie's part.

She defended her boycott of the Ditzy Chicks as not being an attempt to silence them -- but moving the Emergency Broadcast authorization from WIOD to some other radio station is an attempt to "silence" conservative talk show hosts?

It doesn't echange WIOD's radio broadcasts ONE BIT, not one single bit. Rush and Sean show's would air as always, and the audience -- Rush and Sean's listeners -- would not be effected at all.

There is a backlash against hate media talking place in America. We saw signs of this on another post here on Wizbang earlier today regarding Angelina Jolies' attempt to get Fox News cameras out of her face. Lorie's spin exemplifies one of the reasons why people are so angry.

And yet Kim Pre Sap defends the Bush administration's wholesale attack on the Forth Amendment, declaring the NSA program to be legal, yet failing to mention what we both know. That huge parts of the NSA spy program has been deemed ILLEGAL by federal judges. Glad to see Lorie pulled the text where she said the "Democrats were trying to silence Hannity and Limbaugh" - that was the worst piece of misleading pulp to appear here in the last.. oh, 12 hours or so.

It's customary, Lorie, to strike out the old text and insert the new text, so everyone can see the changes made. Being called on your post as you were right off the top of this comment thread, and you changing it without explanation, is really bad form.

CrackrJak:

Let's take a better look at the Left. Socialism and its cousin Communism have always stifled free speech , especially the free speech of those that oppose their politics. It is their mantra that a stronger government is needed because you, the unwashed peasants out there, can't be trusted to do what they deem is right.

Let's take a better look at the right. Republicanism, ie real democracy, defends the freedoms of all. Even the freedoms of those who oppose them and would elect to take them away. No one stifles left based speech, rather it is usually derided and shouted down by the vast majority of those that are disgusted by leftist politics.

That is the essence of this and other "free speech" conflicts. taking punitive action against a radio station based solely on a few radio hosts is wrong. If this decision had been against an npr station the aclu would've immediately came to its defense and mounted a nationwide pr campaign against it.

Just because the left is good at shouting their vitriol louder, doesn't mean they are right. All that means is that they have dug their claws into the majority of the press and use it to further their leftist goals.

Want evidence ? Just look at the democrat presidential debates. They have excluded Fox News from televising their debates. Why ? It's not because Fox is biased, It's because they have little or no control over them and therefore couldn't spin them their way.

If the democrats were truly free speech advocates, they'd remove their control over the media, debate on Fox News, and refrain from bullying people and radio stations that don't share their view.

Lee,
I promised myself that I would ignore you when you call me a liar (which you do repeatedly), but when you try to mislead people by making stuff up, that is too much.

I did not remove anything from the post. Zip. Zero. Nada. I added this line:

"Update: I apologize for posting the story below which Kim already posted yesterday. (I have the kids at home now that school is out and I thought I had read all the Wizbang posts, but somehow missed that one.)"

I then moved the extended quote to below the fold so that it did not take up a significant portion of the main page with material Kim had already posted. I did not remove anything from the post. I cut and pasted the entire quote and moved it to appear after the jump.

You wrote "It's customary, Lorie, to strike out the old text and insert the new text, so everyone can see the changes made. Being called on your post as you were right off the top of this comment thread, and you changing it without explanation, is really bad form."

Well, Lee, it is "really bad form" to accuse people of something they did not do. It is "customary" to behave like a decent human being, but that seems to be beyond your ability. Now I will go back to ignoring you.

I refer you to Mr. Jay Tea, who banned two liberal commenters today because he didn't like their opinions, and Mr. DJ Drummond, who routinely deletes comments made by liberals if he doesn't like what they have to say, as prime examples of how conservatives DO NOT protect the freedoms of those they disagree with

Added to that you might want to take note of the conservative commenters on Wizbang who repeatedly call for the banning of any liberal commenters.

Want evidence ? Just look at the democrat presidential debates. They have excluded Fox News from televising their debates. Why ? It's not because Fox is biased, It's because they have little or no control over them and therefore couldn't spin them their way.

No, it is because Fox is biased, and because Fox is not a legitimate "news' organization. This movement is spreading, and more and more Americans are waking up to the fact that you can do more than just change the channel -- you can just say no when they want to put you on their bogus charade of a news channel, and that's exactly what's happening today with newsmakers. I expect this trend to continue and accelerate.

If he was talking about the line, "Hugh Hewitt writes about those in Broward County trying to silence Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity," it is still there and was never deleted. Heck, it was not ever even moved to appear after the jump. It has been on the front page, unaltered, since it was posted originally. I only moved Hugh's long quote.

Lorie Byrd:

When I wrote "Hugh Hewitt writes about those in Broward County trying to silence Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity" I should probably have said "Hugh Hewitt writes about those in Broward County who sound like they would like to silence..." From the comments in the news story it seemed to me that is what they would like to do, but we can disagree on that. I don't always choose the perfect word or phrase to convey what I am trying to say. Sometimes it is because I am in a hurry and either didn't read closely enough or did not take enough time to think about the best way to say something, and other times it is just because I am an imperfect being, and not the best writer.

Lee, thanks for acknowledging that you were wrong when you accused me of deleting text that was obviously still there on the front page. I guess there wasn't much else you could do in that case. The proof that you were wrong was plainly there for anyone to see. What I can't disprove, or choose not to, is when you constantly accuse me of lying and trying to mislead people.

I never try to mislead anyone, nor have I ever lied in a blog post or column. I have also never ignored new information when it becomes available. I am just not reading the internet 24/7 and even in the many hours I do spend on the computer I am not monitoring news feeds. I am answering emails, scanning comments and reading some of my favorite bloggers and columnists. (Sometimes I am even checking movie times or shopping.) The last time Lee accused me of intentionally ignoring something and not posting an update quickly enough I was not even home. I was with my daughters buying a flower to give my next door neighbor to plant in remembrance of her brother who had just been killed in a car accident. I came home from that to read a comment from Lee saying Lorie is pretending not to know some new piece of information and castigating me for not having posted an update yet. Lee should have apologized for that, but then again he should have apologized for every time he accused me of lying.

Life is too short. I spend entirely too much time on the computer, but am not there all day long. I try to read the comments, but I probably only read about half of them. Some days less than that. There are just not enough hours in a day. That is why recently I have been ignoring Lee's many accusations that I am a liar, which I plan to resume doing now. It says more about him than me anyway and life is too short to waste answering ridiculous attacks. Nuff said.

It wouldn't silence them.

It's more on the order of establishment, like with religion.

When it's the government acting it's different than when it's a private company or individual. This would put an ideological test on private parties to receive a government contract.

It's a big honking government seal of partisan disapproval and an attempt to marginalize the ideological opposition. Didn't work though.

I should say that what the DNC does (no debates on FOX) is stupid, but not the same. The party is not the government. If a Democrat becomes president and decides he or she can continue to demand ideological purity as a test for access... that would not be stupid, it would be very wrong.

If what we hear from "liberals" (and I think in this case the scare quotes are in order) on this blog is in any way representative I believe we are facing a serious assault on freedom of speech and the press in the future.

(I'd also suggest that the aggressive actions against FOX may be one reason why the *other* news networks are starting to be more critical of Democrats in general. After all, journalists are journalists and have gone to the same schools and hang out in the same places. They take jobs where they find jobs. I wouldn't be surprised if the Democratic "purity of access" movement doesn't turn out to be a really bad idea. When you're a journalist "access" is your god.)

Would that you were so zealous to clean up the "culture of corruption" in your own house by holding Wizbangbluers (such as Paul Hamilton) to the same standard. I present to you (and thank you, cirby, for pointing this one out) this instance whereby your fellow blogger in the blue section has not corrected his own initial assumptions or presentation of "facts" at this post except a small thank-you to cirby for investigating the issue further buried in the comments.
