John Hawkins has an interview with Bernard Goldberg posted at Right Wing News about his new book, Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right. Goldberg is, as always, interesting and entertaining. Here is a brief excerpt:
John Hawkins:What do you think about the sort of rhetoric used on the left, particularly on the left side of the blogosphere? You know, Bush is Hitler, they're playing up conspiracy theories, that sort of thing?Bernard Goldberg: It's very, very damaging because once somebody says, "Bush is Hitler," that isn't the beginning of a conversation, that ends the conversation. (There's a) chapter in the book, which is kind of funny, (where) Alec Baldwin is... (compared by his wife) to Saddam Hussein. And Alec Baldwin said, "I'm not Saddam Hussein, I don't kill people, I don't do what Saddam Hussein does", and I make the point in the book that Alec Baldwin is right. He has every right to say, "I'm not Saddam Hussein." Then I said, "Alec, now go out and show that same outrage with your Hollywood friends who call George Bush Adolph Hitler." Because that kind of Rosie O'Donnell rhetoric, where radical Christians are as bad as radical Muslims... the sort of rhetoric where Joy Behar on The View compares Donald Rumsfeld to Hitler, that kind of stuff, turns decent people off.

Firstly... no one but the prescient can recognize failure of foreign or even domestic policy as it happens. People who are *so sure* that Bush has been a foreign policy failure are saying what they think but long before the judgment of History can possibly come to bear.
Now, good on you that the Democrats can claim total inefficacy for six years. Too bad they all sat there getting paid for nothing, huh?
Yes... maybe the Dems would have screwed up just as much. I figure that's pretty much a given, considering what they've been saying we *ought* to do. Though after 9-11 they were on board with the war thing and even before invading Iraq they were on board with the war thing. Maybe if they'd been in power they'd have been invested in making it work instead of trying to make us fail. Maybe they'd have been explaining how the enemy gets a vote. Maybe they'd have been pointing to History and showing how, compared to past wars, this one isn't so bad nor in any way so bleak, instead of playing to the opposition for political bennies.
But we've got JFO up there foaming at the mouth about hypocrisy and saying how the right ought not point out how hateful and entirely insane the left is. Why? Sounds to me like children absolutely refusing to be the first to shape up... and no promise that if the right dons the sack-cloth and ashes that the response will be anything but told-you-so.
Quite apart from anything the right does or doesn't do, the left loses credibility by tolerating the truthers, the Bushitler rhetoric, the incredible hubris and elitism that *doesn't* ever say "maybe the Dems would have screwed up just as much."
Or worse yet, "lets work together to get the best we possibly can out of Iraq."
No. The minority, who couldn't possibly say anything that possibly matters, because they are the minority and no one listens to them, worked against a victory in Iraq... couldn't have paid someone to do better morale work for the enemy. Intent or not, those are facts. And getting the majority in Congress hasn't helped at all. No sudden concern about the results of the rhetoric on the expectations and behavior of the enemy. None.

And the right hasn't had the Supreme Court for decades. Not in my lifetime. (I'll give you a clue- just being appointed by a Republican President does not make one right-thinking.)
Plus, the Senate majority didn't come until 2002. And the left was able to keep a lot of the good that could have been done from happening (ever hear of a filibuster?).
You're argument is not so strong if you have to misrepresent many, many facts to make it. (Like Micheal Moore, Al Gore, and the "truthers".)
"that isn't the beginning of a conversation, that ends the conversation"
That's hits the nail on the head.
And I realize that calling you "traitors" is kinda the same thing coming from the right. Maybe "unintentional co-conspirators" would be a better term?

And the only reason that the Democrats have an illegal immigration bill they want now is because Bush, with as liberal ideas about what to do about illegal immigration as it's possible to have, didn't get his through. So the Democrats think they will do better? How? Are they going to control our borders?
