Car Bomb Defused Near Piccadilly Circus

Ambulance workers saw smoke coming from a Mercedes and checked it out. From the AP:

Police thwarted an apparent terror attack Friday near the famed Piccadilly Circus in the heart of London, defusing a bomb made of a lethal mix of gasoline, propane gas, and nails after an ambulance crew spotted smoke coming from a silver Mercedes outside a nightclub.

The bomb in the city's theater district was powerful enough to have caused "significant injury or loss of life" - possibly killing hundreds, British anti-terror police chief Peter Clarke said.

Britain's new home secretary, Jacqui Smith called an emergency meeting of top officials, calling the attempted attack "international terrorism."

"We are currently facing the most serious and sustained threat to our security from international terrorism," she said afterward. "This reinforces the need for the public to remain vigilant to the threat we face at all times."

Police planned to examine footage from closed-circuit TV cameras in the area, Clarke said, hoping the surveillance network that covers much of central London will help them track down the driver of the rigged Mercedes.

Officers were called to The Haymarket, just south of Piccadilly Circus, after an ambulance crew - responding to a call just before 1:30 a.m. about an injury at a nearby nightclub - noticed smoke coming from a car parked in front of the club, Clarke said.

A bomb squad manually disabled the bomb.

I've been to Piccadilly Circus. It's packed with retail stores, restaurants, night clubs, and a lot of people. It would have been devastating if that bomb had gone off.

The car was parked in front of a night club called Tiger Tiger. It was ladies night as well.

Update: According to Fox News British terror units are also looking for another vehicle in a car park on Park Lane that is linked to the car bomb in Haymarket.

Update II: The Times Online is reporting that the bomb in the Mercedes was packed with gas and nails and, had it gone off, would have produced a "fireball the size of a house."

Update III: Was today's bomb plots done by or inspired by al Qaeda?

Senior police and Whitehall sources today said the failed attempt to inflict mass murder in central London was the work of al-Qaida or those inspired by its ideology.

"You only have to read past cases of those convicted for terrorism to realise they have been plotting to blow up nightclubs and putting gas cylinder bombs in cars," one senior source said.

Counter-terrorism sources said the car bomb found in Haymarket - one of London's main nightlife districts - was similar to car bombs used in Iraq.

Update IV: Apparently, a warning appeared on a radical Islamic website that warned London would be bombed:

An Islamic fanatic predicted a terror blast in London - hours before today's thwarted bomb attack on a West End nightclub. The chilling message, posted on a jihadist internet forum, warned: "Today, I say, Rejoice, by Allah,London shall be bombed." Meanwhile, an international manhunt was launched tonight to find the gang - believed to be linked to al Qaeda - that came within moments of blowing up hundreds of revellers in a London nightclub.

As the capital remained on high alert, fresh details emerged of the 'massive' car bomb - primed with petrol, gas canisters and nails - discovered by police in the heart of the West End. It was reported tonight that the bomb was to have been triggered by a mobile phone.

Park Lane, on Hyde Park's eastern edge, is closed tonight from Marble Arch to Hyde Park corner, with a 200-metre cordon around a suspicious vehicle in an underground car park.

I'm sure the Brit press will find someway to tie this to "George Bush", and how the President has put everyone in danger by being in Iraq, and so on. Unfortunately for the average British man or woman, such tripe will distract them from the facts, which is that Labour's disastrous immigration policy has put them at risk from within. After all, the 7/7 attackers were all well-to-do, homegrown Brits who were radicalized by the foreign-born Muslims presiding at their local Mosque!

CNN via USAToday:

Reports circulate about second suspicious vehicle in London

As London reels from this morning's discovery of a car bomb in the theater district, CNN is quoting anonymous police and security sources who say similar components were found in a vehicle that parking enforcement towed from Trafalgar Square to an underground parking garage near Hyde Park.

ITN says officials won't confirm reports that explosives were found in the second car. But CNN quotes "a senior U.S. official with knowledge of the London investigation" saying "the car was linked to the vehicle outside the club, and that some materials found inside the car were very similar to explosive materials found in the car near Piccadilly Circus."

Sky News reports that the second vehicle, described as a blue hybrid Mercedes, was parked illegally on the West End and towed to the Park Lane impound lot early this morning. "Staff at the pound became suspicious and alerted police because they said 'it smelled of gas,'" the network says. "Forensic officers and bomb disposal teams spent several hours examining the car, however Park Lane has now re-opened."

Just to jump off topic, I could not help but to notice that over the last couple of days there has been absolutely NO mention whatsoever of the White House subpoenas. So I'll discuss it.

Yesterday, Senator Patrick Leahy called Bush's refusal to release White House documents, "Nixonian stonewalling." Leahy added, "In America, no one is above law."1

When Bush refused to comply with Congressional subpoenas regarding the U.S. Attorneys firing scandal he was really flaunting his disdain for the Constitution.

This standoff will likely lead to the Supreme Court. But we know that the Court is stacked in Bush's favor.

There is another way to hold the Bush administration accountable. Besides Bush and Cheney there has been one figure at the center of the warrantless wiretapping program, the torture of America's prisoners, the suspension of Habeas Corpus, and the U.S. Attorneys firings. That man is Alberto Gonzales.

Perhaps this is all just some kind of liberal plot. The Bush Administration would never really do those things. And if they did, then those acts are certainly NOT illegal. Right? Just because this is in the news does not make it "News Worthy" does it?
No need to discuss it. Just keep quiet and hope no one notices.
The silence is deafening.

I am constantly amazed by how much you guys actively refuse to listen to ****facts**** which might make you rethink your worldview.

I know it's comforting to think that all is awesome - but the truck heading for your car doesn't car if you can't see it.

Here's one of the reports I'm referring to:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/23/AR2006092301130.html

"The war in Iraq has become a primary recruitment vehicle for violent Islamic extremists, motivating a new generation of potential terrorists around the world whose numbers may be increasing faster than the United States and its allies can reduce the threat, U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded.

A 30-page National Intelligence Estimate completed in April cites the "centrality" of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the insurgency that has followed, as the leading inspiration for new Islamic extremist networks and cells that are united by little more than an anti-Western agenda. It concludes that, rather than contributing to eventual victory in the global counterterrorism struggle, the situation in Iraq has worsened the U.S. position, according to officials familiar with the classified document."

This report has been out for almost a ***year****, and you guys are still honestly forgetting that it was ever out. You just refuse to integrate it.

So, I guess I'll keep reminding you of it until you all get it.

And here's another couple of reports - from the US State Department itself.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/28/AR2006042802181_pf.html

And here's a fresh one for 2006:

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/30/terror.report/index.html

So, eat that.

Also, just for fun, why did the islamists attack us on 9-11? After all, we hadn't yet attacked the Taliban or invaded Iraq.

Probably because they wanted to attack us.

That doesn't make it any better of an idea to invade and occupy Iraq, which is the one place Al Qaeda was not.

Well, DUH!

Guess what... our war in Europe in the 1940s was the primary recruitment vehicle for the Nazis, too.

Actually, what that does is point out that Iraq is a central theater of the War on Terror... because our enemies are making it one! If Iran, Syria, and the like weren't pouring foreign-born terrorists into Iraq it would have been pacified long ago.

Think for a moment. Do you honestly think that if we invaded Canada that al-Qaeda would lift a finger? Not on your life. They know that our victory in Iraq is a crushing blow to their goals... it's time the Ostrich Wing of the Donkey Party understood that as well.

NEWSFLASH... BREAKING NEWS... it wouldn't matter one wit!

But don't take my word for it, take Osama's words for proof:

BIN LADIN: The cause of the reaction must be sought and the act that has triggered this reaction must be eliminated. The reaction came as a result of the US aggressive policy towards the entire Muslim world and not just towards the Arabian peninsula. So if the cause that has called for this act comes to an end, this act, in turn, will come to an end. So, the driving-away jihad against the US does not stop with its withdrawal from the Arabian peninsula, but rather it must desist from aggressive intervention against Muslims in the whole world.

Jim, are there not Muslims in Afghanistan?

And BTW, can you name a single war or "police action" in world history where the enemy DIDN't actively recruit?

Drago:

Albert the easily led: "Just to jump off topic, I could not help but to notice that over the last couple of days there has been absolutely NO mention whatsoever of the White House subpoenas. So I'll discuss it."

Nor should there be, as it is all for show. Leahy and his little band of followers knows full well it is unconstitutional for Congress to demand internal White House documents etc, just as it would be unconstitutional for Bush to tell the Justice Dept to truck on down to Capital Hill and demand to see the internal communications between Senators and/or congressmen.

See, thats whats called "Separation of Powers". It isn't called "The Dems Get To Look At Whatever They Want Whenever They Want To Powers".

Of course, Leahy and his gang know this. They also know that idiots like Albert don't know this and can be led around by the nose into thinking they can.

Albert the moron: "Yesterday, Senator Patrick Leahy called Bush's refusal to release White House documents, "Nixonian stonewalling." Leahy added, "In America, no one is above law.""

See Above.

Further, speaking of being "above the law", wasn't Leahy the guy who leaked classified material and whose breach was so serious that the Democrat led Senate had to rebuke him? I believe he was (not that that matters to the mo's on the left.)

Albert the impossibly dense: "When Bush refused to comply with Congressional subpoenas regarding the U.S. Attorneys firing scandal he was really flaunting his disdain for the Constitution."

Uh, no he wasn't. Actually, by demanding to see internal communications of the Executive, it was congress (specifically: Leahy) who is flauting the separations clause of the constitution.

Albert the impressively dumb: "This standoff will likely lead to the Supreme Court. But we know that the Court is stacked in Bush's favor."

This will only go to the Supremes if Leahy et al insist on violating the rights of the Executive, where, of course, they will be shot down, as the Constitution calls for.

As a point of reference for Albert and his drop-out friends, please recall the Clinton Administrations attempts to keep Hillary's Health Care Task Force working documents secret. Recall that the Courts eventually ruled against them and forced the Clintons to reveal just how one-sided their discussions had been.

You should recall that the Clinton Admin argued that the working documents from this task force was not subject to public scrutiny because Hillary, as First Lady, was automatically to be accorded the same status as Executive Branch member as the POTUS and VPOTUS. The court took a dim view of this.

However, if Gore or Bill had led the discussions, then the Court would have found that internal discussions and working documents would have come under Executive Privelege, and would not have to have been released.

Get it yet Albert?

Separation of Powers means Congress can't encroach on the Executive, the same as how the Executive cannot encroach upon the Congress.

I know you don't like this, but then again, when I read the Constitution, it doesn't say anywhere within it that Albert and his pals get to do what they want.

Albert, if you disagree, please feel free to cite specific case law that buttresses your position.

Don't worry, we won't hold our breath.

Yes jim, some of it can be averted with law enforcement efforts. As it should be within our country's borders. But to reach the heart of the problem, the terrorist have to be eradicated. That's a military option.

I've made the casual observation that since we took the fight to them, we've managed to avoid any major attacks in the US. I say major because we need to take note of the Sudden Jihad Syndrome attacks. Fortunately, those aren't major, yet have caused loss of American life.
