Preemptive Strike

Well, I just did something new for me: I just banned an IP from Wizbang that, to the best of my knowledge, has never posted a comment here.

The IP in question is 75.126.35.50 -- other bloggers may want to note that, and add it to their banned list.

The reason is simple: it is the IP behind this heinous new "business model."

We've already been afflicted by this sort of thing recently, and in those cases I just replaced the spam link with a warning to knock it off. Now that I have this evidence that it's not just one guy spamming his one site, but a whole new form of spam attack on blogs, I don't have to waste my time doing that any more -- I can just take out Olaf's Troll Hammer and flail away.

Here's a thought -- would it be a good idea for us to publish the spamming IPs that we ban, so others can see which IPs are causing the problems?

This is entirely different from banning commenters for violating our comments policy, by the way. I spend far more time (some say too much time) weighing those bannings. The spammers I smash indiscriminately.

I can read just about any thread, and see a few that bring very little to the table, and who need to get banned.

Yep, publish them. It's your blog, it's your disk, you're paying, and they are intentionally violating the terms of service.

How about excoriating the idiot blogger who uses the service. I can't imagine what kind of nimrods will be using this. Oh wait. Yeah I can.

Yes, publish the IP's. I just finished a major spam cleaning session at my blog, and I'm not in a happy mood.

The guy is scum. He's not a nice guy. It's not ethical. He's not moral.

And you're right Jeff. There's already enough NON-Americans in blogs trying to brainwash dry sponges like Lee and nogo.

I think we should not only ban them but we should charge them $1 per spam for our time and trouble deleting them. I contacted Ron Paul's office and told them to shut off the bots or get out their checkbook, they claimed they no control over it but it stopped the next day. Your idea is a good one, Jay. I posted my ban list.

There's a spam scam a second these days. (used to be "a minute", but that is so last century.) By all means delete, expose and ban!

I am heading to my Blogger Dashboard to ban that IP right now.

Thanks for the heads-up, Jay!

Buying a service to get your numbers up to, presumably, get paid more for blog-ads and stuff subverts the system. Even if they never once posted anywhere they weren't invited it's like pooping in the pool.

It might be legal. Probably is.

Good proof that legality is irrelevant.

Great! Any chance getting Kevin to be more aggressive with the spam and spammers over at the forum (Wizbang alternative site)? I see the bots scanning there constantly thus giving these assholes higer and higher ranking.

I support posting the banned spam IPs.

Thanks for the heads up; I'm on my way to ban them at my blogs.

Maybe I watched too many cartoons as a kid (or as an adult), but the Odin's hammer reference got me thinking of the scene where Elmer and Bugs are doing an opera, and Elmer has a sword and is singing, "Kill the wabbit! Kill the wabbit! Kill the wabbit!"

Except this time, Elmer had a hammer and was singing, "Kill the spammer! Kill the spammer! Kill the spammer!"
