There's war, and then there's WAR

Quite a few people have linked to Herbert Meyer's analysis of the war about the War On Terror, mostly favorably and mostly those who agree with Perception One.

It's a great read, but I don't like to just link to things without adding something. In this case, I have a few thoughts about the metawar he discusses.

The Perception Two crowd see this as, indeed, the "real" war, and are fighting it as they believe political "wars" ought to be fought, with all the standard weapons they usually trot out.

These weapons are familiar to anyone who even casually observes politics in this country: public opinion polls, public campaigns, political machinations, surveys, "non-binding resolutions" and "votes of no confidence" and threats to funding, investigations, media manipulation (most often with the eager compliance of the media, if for no other reason that political infights are good ink), and all the other things we have grown complacent to over the years.

The problem is that us Perception One people are more interested in fighting what we see as the "real" war, and don't want to ass around with the same old partisan bullshit that we've grown so inured to.

That means us P1 people end up feeling like we're defending everyone -- even those who are doing all they can to hinder us and, by extension, helping those trying to harm all of us.

The real danger is that us P1 people might end up deciding that the political enemies at home are a more immediate threat than the terrorist enemies abroad -- and, just like the P2 crowd, start fighting that war with the weapons and tactics we've so far reserved for the "real" enemies.

And, at that point, the terrorist will indeed have won. They won't have to destroy us -- we'll do it all on our own.

There has to be a way to reconcile the P1 and P2 people. Lord knows I've tried -- repeatedly explaining just why I believe in the P1 argument, citing evidence and arguments and facts and applying logic and reason to the matter. But the die-hard P2 crowd responds as is their wont, using their own political weapons on what I see as something that transcends partisanship.

It pisses me off no end, but I will not -- EVER -- lose sight that they are not the enemy. They are the opposition -- and I will NOT treat my fellow Americans as the enemy until they reach a point where they fully and wholeheartedly commit themselves to the enemy's cause.

Where exactly that line is drawn, I'm not sure. It's different for everyone. But for so many on the P2 side, it doesn't exist at all.

Good for you, Jay. In my more pessimistic moments about my "fellow" Americans, I have a hard time grasping it

because so many of them are willing to sell their neighbors out if it means 20 minutes more of "peace" for themselves.

I think Meyer, too, is too optimistic --

However horrific it may be, the knockout punch won't knock us out. Instead, it will shift us from playing defense back to offense - and this time we won't hold back.

Because the opposition won't believe, even with smoking ruins and body parts, that it is the fault of the terrorists.

"Progressives" no longer hold American values, so such things as defending American values must be resisted.

I disagree with the sentiment that the entire groups are sincere in their motivations. Both groups have members that are aligned with one group or another because its expedient for their Party. Two opportunistic sub groups belonging to each side of the Isle.

I would further suggest the P2 group would become much much smaller than the P1 group if the opportunistic sub group members were subtracted.

JT, I agree to a point, but the liberals have moved past that point. Senator Durbin comparing our troops of being like Nazi's and torturers gave the enemy validation of their twisted ideas about us. Rep. Murtha saying publicly that our troops are cold blooded killers, again helped the enemy with their propaganda. Abu Grahib was exposed to the world by a willing liberal press when they should have been reporting how the complaintant should have followed the chain of command. The newsweel article about our troops flushing the Koran down the toilet. I mean, each on there own I would give the benefit of the doubt, but totalled, there is a concerted effort to hurt our troops and willingly or not, to help the enemy. It is not GW that is making the terror effort to grow, it is our own press and politicians. ww

Democrats stopped being American when began Hating George Bush. Family members cease to being family members when they choose to rob , steal and kill their owm.

"there is a concerted effort to hurt our troops and willingly or not, to help the enemy."

Had the traitors Fraud Kerry and Hanoi Jane Fonda been executed for the traitors they are and Kerry not pardoned by Carter, would their be this same level of betrayal by the unbathed crowd? I think not.

Those who are the enemy, of Americas' attempt to defeat her enemies, are the enemy as well.

An American President commited our country to the mission of bringing down a dictatorship, and replacing it with a functional, freedom oriented government. Any attempt to destroy that effort (After the fact that it was set in motion with the approval of congress, after going through all of its prescribed machinations.) before it is accomplished, is disgraceful, and a blight on this countrys' reputation as a nation that keeps its word to its friends. That is horrific.

To say that engaging in the above is just a different way of looking at things, is to say that NAMBLA just has a "different" view of adult child relationships. They don't. They're sick. They're evil. I despise them. And those ones, "who have a different view of the war" and also serve in congress should be shot when they are the ones who "represent America" while they spew they're treasonous filth. I do not just disagree with harry reid,I want him to be eviscerated by the lawful execution of a warrant, and inevitable sentence of a just, and interested in its own survival, country, that has lost patience for such hate filled,by proxy murderers of the innocent and the honorable.

When do the terrorists win ? They win every day that traitors work, unimpeded, to assist them in their evil mission. I would like to know when such acts have been purpotrated against the American fighting man, during time of war, without nary a squak, let alone a prison sentence delivered to the prime offenders, the very collaborators of our blood enemy. Did it happen before ? I don't see how we won that war. Lincoln was right, the Bill of Rights is not a suicide pact, but yet,so many hail the "rights" of them that seek the destruction of an active US military mission, as proof itself, of what an idealistic bunch of target rich morons we are.(I added that last part,or rather, al kkkeda did.)

Are you giving too much emphasis to intent, JayTea ? To what extent does intent matter vs the actual effect ? (I haven't decided myself)

Let's assume your neighbor, without intending to, fires shots into your home daily. They never intend to do you harm, but for whatever reason fail to grasp that pointing the stick at your home and squeezing the lever puts you at risk. At what point does their lack of intent to do you harm become overridden by the effect that they're putting your life at risk ?

Mike,

That's a good analogy...For the average lib. You can't convince me that Democrat leadership does not know what havoc they wreak with their hate filled screeds. All one need do is tune in to Al Jazeera and see their publications. The American left speak for the islamo-nazis just like jon kerry spoke for the communists during the VN war.

Disgusting.
