Tony Snow Stepping Down as Press Secretary

He's citing financial reasons for stepping down.

White House spokesman Tony Snow plans to leave his job before U.S. President George W. Bush's term ends in January 2009, citing financial reasons rather than his recurrence of colon cancer.

In a radio interview this week, Snow, 52, did not reveal when he would leave. Snow earlier this year suffered a return of colon cancer and has been receiving chemotherapy.

But he said his reasons for leaving would be financial. He took a pay cut to leave Fox News.

"I've already made it clear I'm not going to be able to go the distance, but that's primarily for financial reasons," Snow said on conservative radio program "The Hugh Hewitt Show."

"I've told people when my money runs out, then I've got to go."

That sounds like an honest reason. He's such a good press secretary because he's quick on his feet and has no problem engaging some of the most annoying members of the press corp, such as Helen Thomas, while keeping his sense of humor. It will be very sad to see him go.

Flash back: Here's video of Tony Snow taking on Helen Thomas:

Tony is class all the way, and a decent person. He has a young family, and a health crisis, hell, I'd think he was stupid not to try to limit the drain on his finances and leave as much of a nest egg as he can after what we all [hear that, Barney . . .] hope is a long and happy life, but which may not be so long.

After being so happy to see Tony Snow take over as WH Press Secretary, I'll be just as dismayed to see him go. However, I don't blame him.

Who will take his place? Dana Perino? She's been getting a lot of air time lately, and seems to do a pretty good job.

Fred Barnes thinks Tony Snow should run for Senator from VA to fill the seat of, hopefully, retiring John Warner.

I think he could do it. But will he want to? A Senator probably makes more money than the WH Press Secretary, but with his health concerns, is Senator a job he would want to take on at this point. And how would the voters feel about it?

Wizbang is a great blog. I like the different opinions that find their way here and admit that I am conservative. It's entertaining and informative to debate liberals here and at Blue.
Among those that I debate with here often are mantis, langtry and Paul H, Strickmore and ....Lee. They are a credit to this site. I will probably never agree with them, but that's where you learn to hone your argument.

There are a number of liberals who are just a level below them (IMHO) in their ability to serve up and defend a position. Surely they look at conservatives like me in a similar fashion.

Then there are the trolls who are here only to piss in the lemonade. I'll confess that their weak and poorly considered comments are like shooting fish in a barrel, and sometimes that's fun. But sometimes they demonstrate how poorly house trained they are....i.e. Barney or Semanticleo. These guys literally shit on the reputations of good people, even those who are ill.

Semanticleo, your snide remark: $168,000 in salary...? Colo rectal chemo dosing can run $1000 per treatment, not all of it reimbursable. Insurance does not cover all expenses. So let's look at that $168,000. Let's say he has an adjusted gross of 120,000. Where does AMT figure in? Uncovered medical expenses like travel, time off, spouse's time off, child care, then ordinary living expenses in one of the most expensive venues in the country.

Why are you an asshole? Because you are a typical phony liberal who feigns concern for the suffering, but will walk across an eight lane interstate to piss on someone who does not share your political ideology.

As to the questions about T... (Below threshold)

As to the questions about Tony's pay and finances. He has said he took the job as Press Secretary as long as he could afford to make up the pay cut. Apparently, all along he's been using savings and such to cover the difference between what he was accustomed to living on and what he was making.

In other words, he made a sacrifice, even if only economic, for a period of time to do a job that he felt he could contribute something toward.

When he was first diagnosed with cancer, it would have been the easy thing to just resign and do something less stressful and demanding. But he stayed on. Probably because he thought there were things he still needed to do as WH Press Secretary that weren't yet done.

I know that when he went in there, one of the things he wanted to do was revamp the way the Press Office handled issues. He had a plan and wanted to stay to see it through.

The regulation app... (Below threshold)
The regulation appears to have stemmed from an effort to protect the armed services from becoming a magnet for people who knew they would come down with costly genetic illnesses, according to Dr. Mark Nunes, who headed the Air Force Genetics Center's DNA diagnostic laboratory at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.

Well, sounds like a prudent policy decision. Because, sure as the sun rises in the east, there would be situations where someone, or many someone's, would see that as an opportunity to ensure themselves a lifetime of care and benefits.

Look, cleo, no one, least not me, will ever try to claim the U.S. military or Veterans Affairs system is perfect or always fair or even rational or reasonable. They are bureaucracies that have grown out of restrictions set forth by legislation, by considered policy reviews and lessons learned.

The military and VA systems work within a budget just as do every bureaucracy in our government. As much as it seems they all have unlimited resources, we know that is not true. They all make policy decisions that are designed to protect their programs from fraud, misuse and abuse.

On the surface, from the way the LATimes tells the story, it seems this soldier might be getting a raw deal. I hope he has associated himself with one of the veteran's service organizations. They all have benefits counselors and programs that work to try help guys like him. Also, most of the big veterans organizations have gasp!, lobbying efforts that constantly work to rectify situations like this.

So, you and the LATimes can pick a heart string tugging story and you can throw out the charge of do you support the troops, do you really punks!? when in fact, none of us had anything to do with this policy. And in all likelihood, if we were asked as a private citizen, based just upon the LATimes story, should we give him benefits, we would likely say, "yes".

If the LATimes wanted, they could probably find a story about a veteran like this every week, maybe even everyday, and run it in their fishwrap and indict and condemn the military and the VA.

Of course, if they wanted to, which they don't, they could find just as many stories where the system worked out for a veteran, or after considered review, the military and VA reversed a decision or changed it's policy. But that wouldn't advance the theme of the monolithic, uncaring military and VA system, grinding up American's in Bush's war machine, then spitting them out, uncaring and uncared for.

Instead, he travels an hour and a half to the Veterans Affairs facility in Johnson City at least twice a year. Every so often, he makes the three-hour drive to another VA facility in Lexington, Ky., to see a neurologist with expertise in his disease.

Ah, and here we learn he hasn't been completely cut off. He's get medical treatment from the VA. What does the LATimes emphasize? Why, of course, that he has the inconvenience of traveling 1 1/2 to 3 hours at times.

Let me tell you something cleo the d***weed. I live in a small town in the middle of the desert. I don't know how many times I've traveled 1 1/2 to 3 hours to get treatment or see a specialist - even under the very good medical care that I have.

Why must I do this? Simply because it's a small town that doesn't have all the specialists a bigger city has. No psychiatrist, no neurologist and a couple of other specialists I can't recall right at the moment.

I'm sure under Hillarycare or some other socialized medicine the democratics are going to inflict upon us they'll order at least one of each of those specialties to set up practice in my little town. Finally, health care justice for my town! Nirvana at last.

Last point. VA hospitals and medical care facilities are often fine things. Then sometimes they aren't. But if someone wants to get a glimpse at what socialized medicine will look like in the United States, look no further than the VA medical care system. Why, in this day and age, doesn't the government just do away with the system and let qualifying veterans seek medical care in their communities or at the nearest facility that specialized in what they seek?

Well, that was almost my last point. This one is. Not for one second do I think the LATimes cares one bit about this serviceman or the military. Nor do I think cleo cares. It's just another club to use to beat Bush and those of us who support the war effort, over the head.

So, cleo, get back under your rock, in the slime in which you reside, and leave us alone.

But, your case is illustrative of how the military and VA works to serve the needs of the vets. They could have easily said you and others chose to move outside of the established network and are now on your own. But no, they probably looked at the expat vet community living there and decided that it was a commitment they needed to honor.

The VA medical system was established back in the day when extensive formal medical care and hospitals were not the norm. It was an attempt to serve the Nation's veterans. Of course, it's a government program/service, thus it can never be diminished, no matter how much sense it might make to shift to an alternate means of service.

Once a government program is established, it can never go away. I think it's in the Constitution or something.

Flynt is very good at protecting his own bank account - and augmenting it. He saw a way to dupe the left into supporting his crusades - that he turned into a mockery when in court. The fact that so many have fallen for it must give him no end of amusement as he chortles all the way to the bank.

You've been had by one of the greatest bunko artists of the 20th century if you believe there is an ounce of integrity in that man's body.

Why did I think you would fall for this? Perhaps because trolls like you are so formulaic.
