Blaming the Victim in the Miss Teen USA Debacle

At the risk of taking something utterly mindless and irrelevant way too seriously, I felt the need to revisit the case of Miss Teen USA South Carolina Lauren Caitlin Upton who had what will probably go down in history as the most extreme blonde moment in history.

In a way, she's a victim. Any fair look at her answer shows she got mired in liberal taking points.

Pageant questions for the last 30 years are just fluff designed to extract from the young girl her liberal qualifications. So young girls practice spouting liberal buzz phrases, no matter the question.-- Because looking good isn't enough to win a beauty parent, you must have the proper liberal credentials, or there's no sparkly tiara for you!

Remember the questions was, why couldn't one-fifth of Americans locate our country on a world map. Let's break down her answer:

I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps

Everybody is a victim. The first rule of being a good liberal is to find a way to say these hapless morons who can't find the U.S. on a map aren't really morons, they are victims... Victims of the map deficit. The map deficit grew under Reagan, got better under Clinton but has exploded under George Bush. "We should have a program" so everyone can get a map.

and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa

And this is where her coaching really kicked in. Mention the poor people of South Africa. No matter the question, South Africa MUST be in the stock pageant answer.

and, uh, the Iraq

and what good is a good liberal answer without the word Iraq in it?

everywhere like, such as and I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S.

(pageantbot) Education, must speak about education.... OK in fairness, education really should be part of a reasonable answer but by this point, she can't even tell you the question, she's just trying to hit the liberal talking points.

should help

EVERY pageant answer is required to have a call for someone being helped. Because we all know this "help" is a liberal codeword meaning tax increases and income redistribution.

the U.S., er, should help South Africa

Of course we should honey. You've been practicing that line for a year, it was going to come out no matter the question.

and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries

Because being a good liberal means we care about all the dark people.

so we will be able to build up our future for our children.

Because it takes a village to raise a moron.

Her coaching did her in. She was told no matter the question, mention victims, Iraq, South Africa and education. In her zeal to prove herself liberal enough to wear the Miss Teen USA sash and crown, she made a fool of herself. Not unlike other liberals just this time it was more obvious.

Like most liberal statements, it's a regurgitation of vapid, stock talking points instead of original reasoned thought.

Lesson #1, Miss SC, think for yourself and be true to what "you" believe, not what you are "supposed" to believe. It may not win you any beauty pageants, but you'll maintain self respect and likely the respect of others, no matter your actual opinion. In other words, don't be a Hillary. She's been doling out this mental rubbish for years and it hasn't won her any beauty pageants, has it?

3. South Africa should be a conservative talking point because Bush actually greatly exceeded his 2003 pledge of 15 billion dollars to combat AIDS in Sub-Saharan (the south - for those of you without maps) Africa.

Okay, look folks. We all know that continental drift was the result of a CIA/Halliburton plot to separate the black man from the red man, because obviously as long as those two peoples joined forces, the white man didn't have a prayer of evolving in the first place. And without it, there would be no West because there would be no land masses in the western hemisphere where the white man could go develop reactionary concepts like personal freedom and self-governance and individual identities and all of that right-wing crap. And there would be no war, and no one would ever want for anything, and nature would grace humankind with porkchop bushes and fritter trees and all creatures would live in peace and there would be no need for bourgeois concepts like maps because no one would ever need to emit carbon or upset the planet's fragile eco-balance by actually traveling anywhere.

It's funny, but the GOP were the ones who fought for freeing the slaves while the Dems wanted to leave them slaves.
There were more GOPers (many more) on the side of the Civil Rights movement and legislation, while the Dems were unabashedly on the "screw em" side of the debate.
The Dems are the ones pushing Affirmative Action that hurts the people it's supposed to help and yet, brain-dead lefties call conservatives racists.
That's funny.

When I first the answer from this young girl, I was appalled, shocked. I've heard some vapid answers from beauty pageant contestants, but this one was the worst.

After some reflection it seemed she was more a victim of brain freeze, but it does seem some boilerplate pageant response came through in the absence of a coherent answer. The girl would have been better served if she had just stood up there and moved her lips, saying nothing.

I have been curious as to what the other contestants were asked and how they answered. Not enough to go dig up any video of it though.

Despite her national moment of embarrassment, she seems to be handling it well.

"Things happen for a reason," she told the paper. "That's the way life goes."
"I just want people to know that I'm an average teenage girl, living life to the fullest, learning from my mistakes and living life in a positive way, and that is all I can ask for."
"I don't really want to hear myself," she laughingly said.

I've got a level of respect for the girl now I didn't have Sunday when I first heard the audio. She's taking it all in stride and not trying to blame anyone.

jfo, You mean like Michael ... (Below threshold)

jfo, You mean like Michael Steele, a black Republican in the blue state of Maryland who couldn't get elected to the Senate?

Maryland 2006
Registered democratics - 1.7 million
Registered Republicans - 909 thousand
Registered unaffiliated - 488 thousand

democratics voting - 1.02 million
Republicans voting - 571 thousand
Unaffiliated voting - 204 thousand

Looks like if the black candidate, Steele, didn't get elected, it was because the bigoted, racist democratics and independents didn't vot for him. But, let's break it down , shall we?

White men voting for Cardin - 45% Steele - 54%
White women voting for Cardin - 52% Steele - 46%
Non-white men for Cardin - 67% Steele - 32%
Non-white women for Cardin - 76% Steele - 22%

Whites voting for Cardin - 48% Steele - 50%
Blacks voting for Cardin - 74% Steele - 25%

democratics for Cardin - 86% Steele - 12%
Republicans for Cardin - 6% Steele - 94%

Liberals for Cardin - 85% Steele - 12%
Moderate for Cardin - 58% Steele - 41%
Conservatives for Cardin - 17% Steele - 83%

Well, well, well. jfo, why didn't the democrats, independents, liberals and blacks vote for the white guy, Cardin, over the black guy, Steele?

And last, why didn't the democrat party nominate the black guy, Kweisi Mfume in the primary over the white guy, Cardin?

What the crack-pipe-from-hell are you smoking? Let me get this straight, after all that nonsense with all the figures, your big question was, "why did registered democrats* not vote for a Republican?" You are kidding right - oh wait - you went to all the trouble of looking up those figures. So you aren't joking? Wow.

You really want to know why democrats didn't ignore Michael Steele's positions on just about everything they care about, and and vote for him anyway - just because he's black. And since they didn't do that, you think they're racist?

Wow.

Just in case you are really really slow, and you don't realise the mistake you made here, I think Heralder answered your question for you a while ago. I'll paraphrase:

Trainee, the argument makes no sense because the initial claim by jfo to the tune of "Republicans don't elect blacks" is patently untrue.

And the implication that Democrats vote for the minority person is also obviously not true.

No, what Democrats do is publish pictures of Steele made up in black face, promoting racism and racial division in the interest of keeping all of their blacks voting overwhelmingly for the party.

He could have made a more thoughtful answer but the numbers are still interesting.

A larger number of black Democrat congresspersons might also be due to segregated communities and the habit of deliberately drawing districts with the idea that only black people can represent blacks... perpetrating that separation.

The numbers, if not showing a black person who won his election bid, *does* show that white voters and male white voters will and do vote for minority candidates. Apparently white people believe that they *can* be adequately represented by those from other ethnic groups.

No Trainee, you didn't get ... (Below threshold)

No Trainee, you didn't get it. Maybe you missed, overlooked, ignored or didn't understand jfo's comment. To refresh:

jfo commented

Good point brainy....now lets talk about elected minorities. I'll eagerly await the count of brown senators and congresspersons from the republican party.

His comment seems to indicate that since the GOP has a lack of minority elected officials that somehow indicates that we are racists.

All I did was point out that based on his assumptions, then the democratics are the racists.

I know that people are more likely to vote for the candidate of their party, because that candidate more often reflects their political stance.

That still doesn't explain why in Maryland the democratics elected the white guy over the black guy in the primary, but the GOP chose the black guy.

How did the Republicans in Maryland overcome their inherent contempt, bias and racism to nominate a black guy to run for the U.S. Senate seat?

None of that even addresses that the huge majority of blacks identify or affiliate with the democrat party.

In summation, I, nor any Republican I know, is going to vote, or not vote, for a candidate based on skin color. We're going to vote on the candidate who is going to best represent our political views - regardless of skin color.

Maybe it's because Republicans aren't racists at all.

But, for race card playing baiting pimps like jfo and leeward, intimating and inferring is easy and convenient. Of course, jfo is an expert at not actually calling someone what he really thinks they are, because jfo is a chicken shit.

(and by the way, a person is a democrat, the party is the democratic party. Democratics and the demcrat party don't exist. Sort it out, it's not that hard)

No, trainee, it's not that hard. It's that easy. I know what it's supposed be. I choose not to abide by it. Why? Just because the donkey party and Howie "Yearrrghhhh!"
