Kutie Couric goes to war

CBS is sending Katie Couric to Iraq. Unfortunately, they also intend to bring her back. Michael Learmonth reports for Variety:

One year after Couric jumped from NBC's "Today" to CBS in a big-money talent deal, the "Evening News" anchor is embarking on a high-risk tour of Iraq and Syria to revive the broadcast.

Announcement comes just days after an Iraqi translator working for CBS was killed in Baghdad. CBS said Monday the translator had been found dead following his abduction just hours after leaving work at CBS News' Baghdad bureau.

Couric has never been to Iraq, and she will be the second of the big three anchors, following NBC's Brian Williams last spring, to venture to the region since ABC News' Bob Woodruff was nearly killed by an IED attack on his convoy outside Baghdad in early 2006.

While CBS execs say the 12-day trip isn't a relaunch of the newscast, it comes the week after Labor Day, when the TV season begins and evening viewership increases.

Read the whole article at the above link. I know the cynics among you are thinking, "This is nothing but a shameless ploy for ratings!" You're right. But CBS CEO Les Moonves (a/k/a "Paco," a/k/a "Moonves the moron") is thinking around the corner. He's already staked his shaky reputation and high-paying job on the enormous contract bringing Couric to CBS. There's only "upside" to this assignment.

Naturally, Katie will uphold the "fake, but accurate" standard CBS so jealously guards, but she could even do more to help Les' career. Suppose, for instance, that she were attacked in Iraq. It would fit the network's meme that the situation is hopeless. Moonves could appear to be taking a tough stance against terrorism by refusing to negotiate her release, while simultaneously saving the network millions by not getting her back. A classic "win-win situation" for all - except Katie, of course.

But, hey - nobody ever said being a pretty talking head was EASY . . .

Buwaaaahahahahahaha!!!!

I'll believe that when I see it.

Well, there is a way for her to boost the ratings. Maybe, she may be past her prime for the attempt.

The surge is having some positive effects. It is generally safer there than a year ago. Good time to go, but how she will report it??? However, this is no more high risk for CBS than their decision to have her as evening news anchor in the first place.

If Ms. Couric has never been to Iraq, how will she report the difference in progress?

" She's spent the past several weeks interviewing experts about what is happening there--getting a different perspective from just about everybody."

And who are these "experts"? Are they as biased as CBS?

Done well, a series of reports from the war zone could serve as a second launch for Couric's "CBS Evening News."

Catering to who? The left wing Bush-haters?

"Safety is a sobering concern for all reporters in Iraq. The Committee to Protect Journalists said 112 journalists have been killed in Iraq since March 2003. An additional 41 media workers have been killed, the latest being CBS News Iraqi translator Anwar Abbas Lafta, whose body was found over the weekend in Sadr City"

Earth to journalist; it called a WAR! Do you think the enemy will be discriminatory?

Maybe we can get Michael Yon to shadow Couric and report the truth?. And I'm sure AP's Jamil Hussein would be available to "string" a few good tales.

I wonder if the interview with the major Iraqi leadership will be staged staged with a shot a la "Today": she's seated in a chair, dangling her Manolo Blahnik mule off the end of her foot. Because nothing says "Serious Journalist" like playing the Sex Kitten.

Not to mention such a manouver would show the sole of her shoe, which is considered the worst sort of insult. Heck, she might so offend Al Malakhi (sp.?) that he orders her beheaded!

Here is CBS's big lie about the Mapes forgeries.

Since a copy cannot be authenticated without provenance, neither can it be disproven.

And that is completely untrue. There were lots of things about those memos which labeled them as false, but since there was no provenance CBS tried to wiggle out with Thornburgh pronouncing from on high that the truth could not be found. Right, if you're paid to not find it.

Maybe CBS is playing the odds.... Moonves could be hoping that things go horribly wrong and Ms. Couric doesn't make it back from IRAQ. That would solve the rating problems, and the contractual problems with trying to oust her.

Maybe Ms. Couric will get an offer from Al-Jazeera or one of the other Arabic news companies. Best might be if she were "kidnapped" by a not so militant group and held for a while, that could boost CBS ratings, and her personal fortune.

Earth to journalist; it called a WAR! Do you think the enemy will be discriminatory?

For some reason, journalists have always held themselves in the same category as the Red Cross, only without the whole helping-our-soldiers thing.

Of course, given the fact that those same journalists are, on the whole, doing more good than harm to the terrorist cause, I really think CBS will be hard-pressed to find a dangerous situation to toss Couric into. I mean, at this point, the media is demonizing our troops and sympathizing with the enemy... why would the terrorists go and ruin a good thing?

That said, do I think CBS is above making a dangerous situation? Well, only if they could find some way of blaming it on the US troops...

Ode to Katie Cupcake - apologies to Don Henley.

Katie makes her living off the evening news
Just give her something, something she can abuse
People love it when she loses, she loves dirty laundry

Well, she could've been a stripper, but she wound up there
She just has to be perky, she doesn't have to be clear
Go and blow in her ear, give her dirty laundry

Kick Bush when he's up, kick 'em when he's down
Kick Rummy when he's up, kick 'em when he's down
Kick Gonzo when he's up, kick 'em when he's down
Kick 'em when they're appointed, kick 'em all around
Kick 'em when they resign, kick 'em everytime

She's the bubble headed bleach-blonde, comes on at 5
She can tell you about the car bombing with a gleam in her eye
It's good for her side when Iraqi's die, she loves dirty laundry

Can we film the market bombing? Is the surge dead yet?
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the anti-war talking head on the set, she wants dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far she's gone
Just leave well enough alone, she gives out dirty laundry

Kick Bush when he's up, kick 'em when he's down
Kick Rummy when he's up, kick 'em when he's down
Kick Gonzo when he's up, kick 'em when he's down
Kick 'em when they're appointed, kick 'em all around
Kick 'em when they resign, kick 'em everytime

She's the bubble headed bleach-blonde, comes on at 5
She can tell you about the IED bomb with a gleam in her eye
It's good for her side when soldiers die, give her dirty laundry

Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
She spreads her dirty little lies in everybody's pie
She loves to cut you down to size, she loves dirty laundry

She can do the innuendo, she can laugh and zing
When it's said and done, she hasn't told you a thing
We all know Katie's crap is king, give her dirty laundry
