New York gives drivers licenses to illegals

Get that? The state that was the site of the worst terror attack in United States history is letting illegal aliens get drivers licenses now.

They were celebrating outside the governor's office Friday as Eliot Spitzer handed a landmark victory to a half-million illegal immigrants.

The state will no longer require proof of citizenship for driver's licenses.

"We're changing our policy with respect to getting more people out of shadows and into the system so people don't hide they're here," Spitzer said.

He said the current restrictions on non-citizens have filled the roads with unlicensed drivers five times more likely to get into accidents. But he also called it a matter of justice. "As long as I'm governor we won't pretend they don't exist, cut them off from society," Spitzer said.

But the action triggered a bitter response from some 9/11 family members, who said the governor would be providing identification for potential terrorists. And a Brooklyn state senator says he'll try to overturn the decision.

"This governor has chosen to give the keys to the city, the keys to the state to terrorism," Golden said.

As for the public, it's clear that people have strong feelings on both sides of the issue.

"I don't think if you're here illegally you should have the same privileges people who are here legally do," office manager Cliff Hoffman said. Added legal word processor Bill Slater: "I think illegal people are getting a free ride. I don't think it's fair to other hard-working citizens who do work hard."

Planning consultant John Madden said the move is also a pre-emptive strike against another type of potentially hazardous driver. "The problem is they're gonna drive anyway," Madden said. "You might as well make them legal drivers with insurance."

The new rules will start to kick in at the end of the year, unless someone finds a way to put a halt to them.

Under the new policy, the Department of Motor Vehicles will accept foreign passports and birth certificates from immigrants as proof of identification. They will no longer need to provide a Social Security card.

Well gee, why don't we just hand them a few 747s while we're at it?

You would think that New York would have learned the lesson of what terrorism can do to our country more than anyone else, but Governor Spitzer has decided that the best way to handle illegal aliens is to hand them legal identification to make it easier for them to attack the country.

Not to mention that illegal aliens, are, well, illegal. He says he won't cut them off from society, but that's exactly what he should do. If they aren't prepared to come here through legal channels like the millions of legal immigrants before them have, then they shouldn't be here. They have no rights. Period.

Then there's also the effect that illegal aliens are having on the overall well-being of the cities and counties they're taking over, like New York's own Westchester and Putnam counties, as an example. Public drunkenness and urinating have become the norm, as liberal moonbats agreed with illegal aliens who sued the city of Mamaroneck to stop police officers from asking them if they were here legally and trying to get them to move along rather than be wasted in the streets, claiming it was discrimination.

But, to moonbat Governor Spitzer, none of that matters. Safety of New York citizens, overall well-being of the cities and counties of New York, following our country's laws -- that's all irrelevant. The most important thing is that illegal aliens get their way.

So... giving them a driver's license is going to magically make them better drivers? My personal favorite is here in Washington, where the DoL will occasionally give out a driver's license that says "Not Valid for Identification Purposes." We called them about that once, and the gist of their explanation was "We're not going to swear that this person is who they say they are, but we're going to go ahead and let them drive anyways."

This is actually a public safety issue outside of the immigration debate. Regulating drivers is important for public safety on the streets, roads and highways.

A good example is bicycles. Because no license, insurance or driver's education is involved, 67% of all adult bicycle accidents involve a single vehicle compared to less than 5% of motorcycles or automobiles. And most adult bicyclists also ignore basic rules of the road such as running stop signs or red lights as well, ride the wrong way down the street, don't wear a helmet, or attempt to crowd out motorcycles on corners or other risky behaviors. 500,000 bicyclists are injured each year, 67% in accident they either caused or were the only vehicle involved in. Only 33% of the bicycle accidents involve a motor vehicle of some sort. Unlicensed drivers are a clear danger to themselves and others.

Marc and Wildwillie, a system of drivers tests and licenses weeds out the good from the bad drivers to a large extent and helps to keep drunks and drug abusers off the road as much as possible. My argument is simply that for the sake of safe driving that all drivers on the road should pass a test as well as being insured. This is a common sense public safety issue entirely seperate from federal rules regarding immigration.

Those caught driving without a license are likely to have their car towed by the police, so dangerous drivers are weeded out with this process to a large extent.

Oregon has both a written test as well as a driver test, and for a motorcycle there is an additional written test and a second driving test. One has to understand English very well to be able to read and pass the written test for example. No doubt the NY testing is similiar. But many in NY don't drive anyway because of the traffic in the main cities.

With NAFTA many Canadian and Mexican truckers already spend a lot of time in the U.S. The immigration issue needs to handled at the federal level with immigration policy set there.

By the way what's the nationality of everyone here anyway? Unless you're a Native American Indian, then you're from an immigrant background of some type, right?

No one has pointed out that the article above has a mistake in its second paragraph namely-

The state will no longer require proof of citizenship for driver's licenses.

A social security card doesn't prove citizenship. Which is the requirement NY is abandoning for those applying for driver's license.

A SS card proves a person has a legal right to be in the US. That's entirely different from being a citizen. Trust me I know, my wife was born in the Philippines, legally immigrated to this country in 1989 and had a SS# from Dec 1989 to Jan 94 without being a citizen. She became a citizen on 1-25-94.

My mother-in-law and one sister-in-law have gone through similar steps.

Anyone who actually has been through the immigration process or cared to honestly educate themselves on the subject, would know the difference. A good chunk of the MSM, and the blogosphere show their ignorance on immigration matters on a regular basis.

Odd. I'm married to a Filipina myself and have been for 10 years. She has never been able to obtain a SS card because she is a non-citizen. At least that's the excuse given by the SSA.

What she does have is a Individual Tax[ayer Identification Number that is used on IRS forms.

I give it another 10-20 years before the citizens of this country get pissed off enough to wake up to the level of corruption and power abuse by career politicians and start marching through the streets with rope and hang every one of them from the nearest lamp post.

The problem is I have a house and a car here, so when my License expires so does my insurance so if my car is stolen while I am not here it is not insured, it is a loophole in the Law and crazy, if I am allowed to have a house, why can't I drive my car as soon as I arrive and have it insured when I am not here.

This don't hurt you, you still eating, it will be more peace on the streets, less fear, less drunkers. The real killings come from the war. LETS LIVE IN PEACE, PLEACE!!!

One other thing that I haven't seen mentioned is that when they get a drivers liscese the will be asked if they want to sign up to vote. I have not seen any provisions to stop it. I personally don't want the illegeals making laws for me and choosing who is going to run our country.
