Only last week, Jimmy Carter got into a shouting match with his government security detail when they wouldn't let him go where he wanted in Dafur. It seemed at the time he didn't understand the guard wasn't acting on his own, but under orders of the government.
So now he serves up some propaganda for the dictatorial regime by declaring "There is a legal definition of genocide and Darfur does not meet that legal standard. The atrocities were horrible but I don't think it qualifies to be called genocide." Ken McCracken has more at Say Anything, including a detailed map of the region and the relevant text from the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Muslim militias, often with evident government aid, have been destroying villages, murdering, raping, and "ethnically cleansing" large sections of the area of non-Muslim tribesmen. 200,000 have been killed or died as a result, and the refugee camps are teeming with those who fled their homes. Attempting to downgrade this catastrophe is unconscionable.
Jimmy Carter continues to demonstrate his remarkable (for a former American President) preference for dictators over their victims.

It's not genocide, just some minor skirmish between far branches of the same tree.
Move along then, no dead bodies to see there.

It's absolutely inexcusable. The UN has clearly defined genocide and in 1948 pledged to punish it. But the UN only wants to say touchy-feely things without having to actually do anything about what they say. Jimmah tells us that the events in Darfur do not meet the definition of genocide.
Let's see:
The convention defines genocide as any act committed with the idea of destroying in whole or in part a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. This includes such acts as:
1 Killing members of the group
2 Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
3 Deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to physically destroy the group (the whole group or even part of the group)
4 Forcefully transferring children of the group to another group
1, 2, 3 and 4 - check, check, check and check.
What definitions does Mr. Carter propose are not being met?
And Marc has an excellent point. If this is not genocide, then why the constant harping from the reactionary left?

Um, because they like harping. And carping and shi**ing their pants over anything, but do little else but soil themselves.
But remember... it's all about the oil, with the U.N.'s help.

Hmmmm, maybe you should call your pals at the UN and ask why their not doing anything significant to help. Oh yeah, their "military wing" is tied up raping young girls elsewhere in Africa and the management is busy with "oil for food" program oversight and going to all those dinners.
Sorry Mantis, I guess you were probably refering to the US not helping. Let's get Biden on the phone and move those troops from Iraq to Darfur.

"Ooh, I like 'Neocomm'."
Thanks Kim. I think its an appropriate term for the modern American lefts. They are communists at heart, but a "kinder and gentler" type of communist. Instead of violent revolutions with military and police forces that the traditional, old school communists favor, they prefer a slower takeover using propaganda, indoctrination, and judicial fiat. That's why the fields of journalism, education, and law are full of leftists.

That's so weird because last week, Carter was saying just the opposite:
In an AP interview, Carter said the Sudanese government was responsible for the "crime against humanity" in Darfur, accusing government-backed Arab militias known as the janjaweed of "ethnic cleansing" in black villages.
What could he be bartering for?
"Eric Reeves at The New Republic slams Carter for turning a blind eye to genocide, saying that Carter is engaged in "some ghastly quid pro quo he hopes to arrange with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir,"
