Bidding is now closed. The winning bid:
$2,100,100
Update: The winner is BettyC588. K-Lo says she's Betty Casey. Is she philanthropist Betty Brown Casey?
Mark Steyn is just as skeptical as I am regarding Reid's statement:
Harry Reid's Rush-and-I-don't-agree-on-much-but letter makes a small man look even more shriveled. Rush is matching the highest bid for the Reid/Kennedy/Dodd/etc letter, so right now he'll be writing a personal check for somewhere north of two million bucks. He has invited the Senate smearers also to match the highest bid. Like so many commissars from the people's party, Harry Reid is a wealthy man.
So, will Harry, who says he's so proud to be associated with this fundraising effort, and the other senators put their money where their mouths are and also write a personal check equal to the winning bid to the Marine Corp-Law Enforcement Foundation? Come on, Senators, take Rush up on his challenge.
Update II: Rush confirmed today that the winner is in fact philanthropist Betty Casey, who is a huge Rush fan. (I wasn't able to listen to Rush's show at the time he announced the winner.) Allahpundit captured the video of Rush announcing the winner:
Update III: Neocon News reports that it's the Eugene B. Casey Foundation that purchased the letter, of which Betty is the trustee.
Bookworm has a post with background information about Betty Casey.

And I just saw this on The Corner. Kathryn Jean Lopez informs us that Harry Reid went to the floor of the Senate earlier today and asked that people with the means to do so bid on Rush's Reid Smear Letter that's on eBay. Kathryn posted the transcript:
REID: MADAM PRESIDENT, EARLY THIS MONTH I CAME TO THE FLOOR TO DISCUSS SOME COMMENTS MADE BY RUSH LIMBAUGH. FOLLOWING MY REMARKS, MORE THAN 40 OF MY SENATE COLLEAGUES AND I CO-SIGNED A LETTER TO THE CHAIRMAN OF CLEAR CHANNEL, MARK MAY, TELLING HIM THAT WE WANTED HIM TO CONFER WITH RUSH LIMBAUGH REGARDING THE } STATEMENTS HE MADE. I'VE SINCE SPOKEN TO MARK MAY ABOUT THIS. MARK MAY, IN FACT, CALLED ME REGARDING THIS LETTER. THIS WEEK, RUSH LIMBAUGH PUT THE ORIGINAL COPY OF THAT LETTER UP FOR AUCTION ON E-BAY. MR. PRESIDENT, WE DIDN'T HAVE TIME, OR WE COULD HAVE GOTTEN EVERY SENATOR TO SIGN THAT LETTER. BUT HE PUT THE LETTER UP FOR AUCTION ON E-BAY AND I THINK VERY, VERY CONSTRUCTIVELY, LEFT THE PROCEEDS OF THAT IT GO TO THE MARINE CORPS LAW ENFORCEMENTS FOUNDATION. THAT PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE TO MARINES AND FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL WHOSE PARENTS FALL IN THE LINE OF DUTY. WHAT COULD BE A MORE WORTHWHILE CAUSE? I THINK IT'S REALLY GOOD THAT THIS MONEY ON E-BAY IS GOING TO BE RAISED FOR THIS PURPOSE. WHEN I SPOKE TO MARK MAYIC HE AND I THOUGHT THIS PROBABLY WOULDN'T MAKE MUCH MONEY, A LETTER WRITTEN BY DEMOCRATIC SENATORS COMPLAINING ABOUT SOMETHING. THIS MORNING, THE BID IS MORE THAN $2 MILLION FOR THIS. WE HAVE WATCHED IT DURING THE WEEK. IT KEEPS GOING UP-AND-UP AND UP. THERE'S ONLY A LITTLE BIT OF TIME LEFT ON IT. BUT IT CERTAINLY IS GOING TO BE MORE THAN $2 MILLION. NEVER DID WE THINK THAT THIS LETTER WOULD BRING MONEY OF THIS NATURE. AND, FOR THE CAUSE, MADAM PRESIDENT, IT IS EXTREMELY GOOD. NOW, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT RUSH LIMBAUGH AND I DON'T AGREE ON EVERYTHING IN LIFE AND MAYBE THAT IS KIND OF AN UNDERSTATEMENT. BUT WITHOUT QUALIFICATION MARK MAY, THE OWNER OF THE NETWORK THAT HAS RUSH LIMBAUGH AND RUSH LIMBAUGH SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS LETTER THAT THEY'RE AUCTIONING IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT RAISES MONEY FOR A WORTHWHILE CAUSE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE COULD DO MORE IMPORTANT THAN HELPING TO ENSURE THAT CHILDREN OF OUR FALLEN SOLDIERS AND POLICE OFFICERS WHO HAVE FALLEN IN THE LINE OF DUTY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR CHILDREN TO HAVE A GOOD EDUCATION. THINK OF THIS, MORE THAN $2 MILLION -- THAT WILL REALLY HELP. THAT'S, AGAIN, AN UNDERSTATEMENT. THERE'S ONLY A LITTLE BIT OF TIME LEFT SO I WOULD ASK THOSE THAT ARE WANTING TO DO MORE, THAT THEY CAN GO TO HARRY REID LETTER AND IT WILL COME UP ON E-BAY. I ENCOURAGE ANYONE INTERESTED WITH THE MEANS TO CONSIDER CONTRIBUTING TO THIS WORTHWHILE CAUSE. I STRONGLY BELIEVE WHEN WE CAN PUT OUR DIFFERENCES ASIDE, EVEN HARRY REID AND RUSH LIMBAUGH, WE SHOULD DO THAT AND TRY TO ACCOMPLISH GOOD THINGS FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. THIS DOES THAT, MADAM PRESIDENT. MORE THAN $2 MILLION FOR A LETTER SIGNED BY THIS SENATOR AND MY FRIENDS.
So he has been following this auction. Since the letter is garnering so much money, Reid doesn't seem to have much of a choice except to put as positive a spin on this as possible. And his attempt to make it look as if he and Mark Mays worked together in this effort is so unbelievably sleazy. He's the epitome of a sleazy politician. Question: does Reid know that Rush has challenged him and the other senators to match the winning bid?
Click here to watch sleazy Harry Reid taking credit for the entire episode, as if this was the original purpose of writing this letter. And note that when Harry refers to Mark May, he's pronouncing the name incorrectly. It's Mark Mays. And if he were really good buddies with Mr. Mays, he would know that.

Maybe the senators can pool their money to match the bid together. That's only about 50K per senator...

Even a true soldier who lies about what he saw/did is a phoney in my book...but Rush didn't go that far.

PLEASE NOTE THAT GIFTS MADE UNDER THIS PROGRAM ARE NOT TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
You can't deduct it as a donation because Rush is keeping the profits.
You will also notice that Rush will donate one membership for each one brought, but what does that cost Rush? All he is "donating" is access to his site. If he was being genuine he would have donated the profits from the $50 membership to a charity, but he didn't he kept it.

Well, we know what the Democrats thoughts on the Soldiers are because they tell us all the time.
Kerry - They are terrorists who kill children in their beds at night.
Durbin -they are worse than Stalin and Pol Pot.
Murtha - they are guilty of murder at Haditha (just proven totally false and based on the phoney testimony of a terrorist insurgent with a phony video tape no apology from Murtha, who was willing to besmirch and ruin the lives of his fellow marines based on the word and tripe of the enemy instead of giving his own soldiers the benefit of the doubt)
Moveon.org, the puppetmaster of the Democrat patry - they are "betrayus"
Various Democrats in Congress - They are "children" who have to be protect, not brave volunteers doing a mission.
Reid and other Democrats - they are losers who can't possibly win the war and its already lost. etc. etc.
Also, do the Democrats take glee in seeing Soldier's killed? You would certainly have more evidence to support that than Starks remark about the President, since the Democrats remarks like those above support and echo the enemy propaganda and give them reason to keep on fighting and killing our soldiers. And the Democrats certainly want to pull the rug out from under the soldiers and have them come home defeated and have the deaths already experienced be meaningless, just to get political points on President Bush.
It's so clear to see why people don't believe the Democrats support the troops and why its so phony sounding when they say they do.
You can't tell by the fruit they produce. Harry Reid's little episode today only further expounds upon that.

Big deal that one has to BUY a gift subscription for a service person so they in turn do not have to. Why is someone who makes a profit for what they do being demonized??? What right does Barney have to decide how much of Rush's profits he needs to donate to make good on false charges? Hell, Barney, if you had the power you'd be pretty much coming up on extortion charges with your line of thinking. Frankly, Barney, I would like to know what percentage of your income you give to, let's say, Fisher House or the USO or whatever to help support the troops you seem to feel sorry for? Rush had something of value - $2 million worth - and is donating the proceeds of that sale to benefit service personnel. He had no obligation to match that with "his own funds". The proceeds from the auction ARE HIS OWN FUNDS!!!! Barney, the sweat involved in business occurs because people reap rewards from those efforts. Whether its a product, service or talk radio, someone is doing something someone else wants and is willing to pay for. No matter what you say Barney, it's the way the world works and it is not a crime no matter how much you try to make it so. Every convenience you have today including the computer that allows you to spew your vapid opinions exists because someone is happy enough to make a profit off of you. I am sorry to write this Barney, but you are an idiot and I actually feel sorry for you.

Math 101.
Take a $50 product and sell it for $50. With that purchase the buyer gets the same product with the same $50 value and then gives it away via Rush to a soldier.
$50 minus $50 equals what? ZERO.
Even using your contorted *logic* Rush is "providing two passwords for $50" so at best Rush is making 25 bucks on the deal. And as you so stridently point out the program is not listed as a non-profit, so he's entitled to a profit.

JFO:
I know you're an idiot, a fool and a liar.
Taking a moment to consider the source........
Yep, I thought so. That means about as much as a steaming pile in the woods left by a (no not bear you ain't big enough in the manly dept) squirrel.

Somebody should tell Reid that there is still time to get everyone's signature on a letter. Think of how much more money he could raise. Get busy, Harry.

I have just received an anonymous e-mail with a link to a site, I Call BS, that purports to have a secret recording of Harry Reid's Secretary from Friday morning. You can listen to the mp3 and judge for yourself. It seems authentic to me.
Some one should tell Rush.

Excellent link. If that recording is real, I'll believe in tameable fusion.
